A festival introduces itself through the soles of your shoes.
On a desert playa, alkali dust puffs up around your boots, fine as flour. On a forest trail it's pine needles and roots, with string lights looped through the branches overhead. At a lake festival, sand rides home in every pocket. A city festival hands you warm concrete and a skyline behind the main stage. A folk festival offers long grass and a fiddle tune drifting out of a barn, and a winter festival greets you with the squeak of packed snow on the walk to the gate.
That ground is the best answer to what to wear to a music festival. The lineup sets the mood. The setting writes the outfit.
We're Magus and Lylyth Fawn, Los Angeles visionary artists who wear our own art "everywhere, all the time." This guide sorts music festival outfits by setting, from desert to indoor, each with an outfit formula, a piece or two from our studio and our deeper guides.
How do you choose a music festival outfit?
Choose a music festival outfit in three passes: the setting first, the overnight low second and the music third. Ground, shade and night temperature decide your fabrics and layers; the lineup decides the art. Magus Fawn builds every look on one formula: a breathable base, one statement piece and a warm layer waiting for after dark.
Typical night temperatures come from our festival research:
| Festival type | Typical nights | Outfit formula | Festivals to know |
|---|---|---|---|
| Desert | 45–55°F at Burning Man | Hooded tank by day, faux-fur-lined cloak by night | Burning Man, Lightning in a Bottle |
| Forest | 45–65°F | Cotton hooded tank, boots, a hoodie for 2 a.m. | Electric Forest, Shambhala |
| Beach and lake | 60s°F | One-piece swimsuit, shorts, a light layer | Love Burn, Boom |
| City one-day | 50–75°F | Statement top, pockets, a layer to tie on | Ultra, Movement |
| Folk fields | 25–60°F by season | Cotton tee or dress, hat, cloak | Oregon Country Fair, Pickathon |
| Winter | 35–45°F and below | Thermals, joggers, hoodie, cloak | Gem & Jam, Countdown NYE |
| Indoor | Hot room, cold queue | One light piece, one coat for the line | Escape Halloween |
Music still matters, just third; our rave outfit guide covers the genre codes.
Desert festival outfits: shade by day, faux fur by night
The desert swings harder than any other setting. At Burning Man, days run 90–100°F and nights 45–55°F, sometimes into the 40s. Lightning in a Bottle brings 85–95°F afternoons and wind-blown dust, and even EDC Las Vegas cools in the desert wind toward dawn.
Desert formula: a breathable hooded top and shorts for the sun, a bandana and goggles for the dust, and a faux-fur-lined cloak for the second half of the night.

Egyptian Atlantis reads like a temple wall lit in gold: hieroglyph panels, birds, pyramids and jackal guardians around a tree-of-life medallion on deep navy. The Egyptian Atlantis cotton sleeveless hooded tank ($80) is 100% cotton at a listed 310 g/m², with a drawstring hood and kangaroo pocket, XS–5XL. (Read its story: Side B Is Sunrise.)

Once the desert cools, Dream Weaver in yellow wears the playa's own palette: chartreuse, gold and olive filigree swirling up the back toward a golden wildcat face with a violet jewel at its brow. The Yellow Dream Weaver men's festival cloak ($250) has a micro-mink poly outer, a faux-fur lining in black or white, a double front zipper and four pockets, two of them interior stash pockets. Unisex fit, XS–5XL.

Forest festival outfits: roots underfoot, a hood for 2 a.m.
Forest festivals trade glare for dappled shade, tree roots and damp air. Electric Forest's nights run 55–65°F and humid under the lit trees of Sherwood Forest; Shambhala drops to 45–55°F beside the Salmo River; Lost Lands sits in the 50s among the life-size dinosaurs of Legend Valley.
Forest formula: a breathable hooded top, closed shoes that grip roots and mud, a headlamp, and a velvet or cotton hoodie for the dewy hours after midnight.

Crystal Shroom Kingdom is a fairy-tale city grown from the forest floor: violet spires, mushroom-capped domes, bronze filigree and a glowing teal crystal at the center of the chest. In its product photo, the Crystal Shroom Kingdom cotton sleeveless hooded tank ($80) stands under the pines at a psytrance stage strung with bunting. It's 100% cotton with a drawstring hood and kangaroo pocket, XS–5XL (read its story: Three Riddles Before Last Call).

Beach and lake festival outfits: swim, dance, repeat
Water festivals run warm by day and breezy by night. Love Burn on Miami's Virginia Key sees 60–68°F nights with a sea breeze; Boom in Portugal (odd years only, next in July 2027) sits beside a reservoir with lake swimming; and on Costa Rica's southern Pacific coast, where Envision ran until 2026, the national weather service's regional climate analyses (1961–1990 baseline) give a muggy average low of 20.5°C (69°F).
Beach and lake formula: a one-piece swimsuit worn as a bodysuit, shorts or a sarong, a wide hat, water shoes and one light layer for the breeze after dark.

Madriax in mauve blooms a dotted mandala off one hip, rings of beaded plum and lilac spiraling over a fine honeycomb grid. The Madriax Mauve women's one-piece swimsuit ($65; $68 in 2XL, $69 in 3XL) is 75% recycled poly and 25% elastane at 225 g/m², with a double-layer front and a low scoop back, described on its page as quick-dry and chlorine-resistant. It runs XS–3XL and is tagged "Lylyth's Personal Pick."

City one-day festival outfits: carry everything, dance in all of it
A city festival is a day trip with a dance floor: you arrive by train, dance on pavement and lawns, and leave at close with everything you brought. Ultra fills Miami's Bayfront Park in late March with 68–75°F humid nights, and Movement takes over Detroit's Hart Plaza on Memorial Day weekend at 50–60°F.
City formula: one statement top, shorts or cargos with real pockets, cushioned sneakers for concrete and a light layer tied at the waist. Bag rules vary by event, so read the policy before you pack.

Cyber Punk Mech mirrors a biomechanical guardian down the torso in cobalt, violet and cyan with flecks of gold, under a white-line geometric crest at the collarbones. The Cyber Punk Mech crushed velvet tank top ($60) is 95% poly and 5% spandex crushed velvet at 240 g/m², crew neck, regular fit, S–5XL.

What do you wear to a folk festival?
Wear a folk festival like a long summer day in a meadow: a soft cotton tee or a flowing dress, loose trousers you can sit on the grass in, boots or sturdy sandals, a hat and a warm layer for the night stage. Folk crowds love handmade texture and color, so one Magus Fawn print reads as festive and easy.
A folk festival "celebrates traditional folk crafts and folk music," and the best feel like a village that appears for a weekend. Oregon Country Fair, near Veneta each July since 1969, winds folk, world music and vaudeville through trails of handmade booths, by day only. The Okanogan Family Barter Faire in Washington hosts folk and jam bands in mid-October, when nights sit at 25–35°F.
It's also home turf for boho-chic, drawing on "various bohemian and hippie influences."

Purple Marble is the quietest art in this guide: violet, lavender, white and ink-dark swirls, marbled like the endpapers of an old hand-bound book. The Purple Marble cotton T-shirt ($60) is 100% cotton at 190 g/m², a short-sleeve crew neck in a regular fit, XS–5XL. It's made for a fiddle workshop in the shade.

For frosty faire nights, Shroom Flower of Life brings the forest floor along: lime-green mushroom caps and fanned gills tumbling over indigo and violet into a spiral medallion at the hem. The Green Shroom Flower of Life women's festival cloak ($250) is faux-fur-lined in black or white, with heavy drawstrings and four pockets, unisex fit XS–5XL (read its story: Lost on Purpose).

Winter festival outfits: build in layers, finish with a cloak
In winter, the outfit and the warmth become the same thing. Gem & Jam, timed with the Tucson gem shows in early February, brings desert nights of 35–45°F. On New Year's Eve, the line outside Countdown NYE at San Bernardino's NOS Events Center sits at 40–45°F.
Winter formula: a thermal base, brushed-fleece joggers or leggings, a velvet or cotton hoodie, a faux-fur-lined cloak, wool socks and boots. Every layer should come off, because the dance floor runs warmer than the walk.

Angel Catcher in blue glows like stained glass on your back: a cobalt and royal-blue Flower of Life rosette between two six-pointed stars, set in black and silver-grey line work. The Angel Catcher Blue men's festival cloak ($250) pairs a micro-mink poly outer with a faux-fur lining in black or white, and two deep side pockets for cold hands in the queue. Unisex fit, XS–5XL; size up for a hoodie underneath (read its story: Twelve Cloaks Before Sunrise).
Nicholas, reviewing a first cloak in December 2023, put it plainly: "Super comfortable and warm. Fell asleep with it on. Kept me warm all night."

Indoor festival outfits: light for the dance floor, warm for the queue
Indoor festivals flip the weather: a warm hall, a cold queue. Escape Halloween fills the NOS Events Center halls in late October with 50–55°F nights outside, and warehouse parties run cold in winter until the room fills.
Indoor formula: one light, breathable piece for the dance floor, one coat or cloak for the line that you can check or tie on, and shoes built for hours on concrete.

Mystical Egypt runs a column of seven rainbow orbs from the collar to a golden pyramid at the hem, framed by gold and violet line mandalas on deep navy. The Mystical Egypt men's sleeveless hoodie ($75) is a light hooded layer: 95% poly and 5% spandex jersey at 180 g/m², regular fit, S–2XL. Hood up for the strobe, arms free for the drop.

Are festival outfits different for men and women?
Mostly, no. The festival decides the outfit: a desert night calls for a cloak whoever wears it. Cuts differ more than formulas. Magus Fawn makes dresses, bodysuits and swimsuits cut for women and tanks and sleeveless hoodies sold as men's, while our festival cloaks are a unisex fit from XS to 5XL.
Festival outfits for women often start with a dress, festival outfits for men with a tank, and both end under a hood.

For a dress that works almost anywhere, the Cosmic Cross Silver women's lace cami dress ($65) sets a silver-grey and lilac symmetrical print beneath a black lace bust. It's backless with spaghetti straps, 95% poly and 5% spandex jersey at 180 g/m², regular fit, S–4XL.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a music festival and a rave?
A music festival is a ticketed gathering, often over several days, with multiple stages, art and sometimes camping, built around one or many genres. A rave is a dance party centered on DJs and electronic music, from a warehouse night to a stadium. Many festivals hold raves inside them; folk and roots festivals rarely do.
What is boho festival style?
Boho festival style draws on bohemian and hippie fashion, much of it popular since the late 1960s: flowing dresses, lace, fringe, wide-brim hats, layered jewelry and earthy prints. It's the classic look for folk festivals and daytime fields. For a boho outfit that lasts past midnight, add boots and a hooded cloak over the dress.
