It's 5:10 a.m. and the dance temple is a ring of UV string art floating in the dark.
The kick drum hasn't let up since midnight, a rolling 145 BPM you feel in your sternum before you hear it. Dew beads on the parachute canopy overhead. Your breath shows faintly in the blacklight, and the dancers around you have quietly changed shape: hoods up, cloaks zipped to the chin, a cat-eared hooded blanket bobbing by the speaker stack.
Then the sky over the hills turns from ink to violet to peach. The DJ drops the track everyone has been waiting for, the whole floor roars at the horizon, and cloaks all over the floor swing open at once like wings.
That moment is the real answer to what to wear to a psytrance festival: clothing that carries the art, moves with you for twelve hours, and keeps you on the floor through the coldest hour before sunrise.
We're Magus and Lylyth Fawn, Los Angeles visionary artists, and psytrance is home turf. Magus is a Psy EDM producer (his EP is Trancendance) as well as a digital artist, so he knows this music from both sides of the speaker. Lylyth makes the fractal art.
What to wear to a psytrance festival, hour by hour
Dress for three climates in one night. Magus Fawn's psytrance formula is a breathable printed base for the afternoon sun, flowing pants or leggings you can dance in for hours, a hat for the morning set, and a hooded warm layer for the hour before sunrise, when the temperature bottoms out and the best music starts.
At a psy gathering, sunrise is sacred and the floor keeps dancing all morning in the sun, so your outfit has to work across the whole arc:
| When | What's happening | What to wear |
|---|---|---|
| Afternoon | Heat, dust, workshops, the chill-out dome | Cotton tee or tank, chiffon kimono, bucket hat |
| Sunset | The temperature starts to slide | Add a crushed velvet layer |
| Midnight to 4 a.m. | Full-on peak, warm in the middle of the floor | Lantern pants or leggings, hoodie tied at the waist |
| The hour before sunrise | The coldest stretch of the night, heavy dew | Hooded cloak zipped up, fleece joggers |
| Sunrise and the morning set | Cloaks swing open, dancing in the sun until noon | Back down to the tee, hat on |
The dress code underneath is flowy, earthy, UV and handmade: mandala and fractal prints, harem pants, pixie hoods, asymmetric layers, bare feet or dusty boots. Nobody checks it at the gate. Wear the print that makes you feel most like yourself.
Where does psytrance fashion come from?

Psytrance fashion comes from the Goa beach parties of early-1990s India, where the music and the art scene grew up together. Magus Fawn reads today's dress code as their descendant: mandala and fractal prints, sacred geometry, flowing harem-style pants, hoods and handmade layers, built for dancing outdoors from dusk until well after sunrise.
Goa trance began in the Indian state of Goa, with the first parties on beaches like Anjuna and Vagator around 1991 to 1993. As the sound went digital it became psytrance, which Wikipedia notes evolved alongside "the multimedia psychedelic arts scene" (Psychedelic trance). The art never left: shamanic and cosmic themes, UV string art, parachute canopies, chill-out domes and a strong eco and DIY ethic.
The clothes simply follow the decor. When the stage is a mandala, the dancers wear mandalas too.
That's why psytrance feels personal to us. Magus produces Psy EDM and makes visionary art, and both come from the same place. When we design a print, we picture it at 2 p.m. in the dust and at 5 a.m. under blacklight.
The Temple of Horus cotton t-shirt ($60) sets a gold and green winged mandala in temple filigree across electric blue and violet. It's 100% cotton at 190 g/m², in XS–5XL, an easy first layer for a hot afternoon (read the story behind it: The Eye Made Whole).
Psytrance outfit ideas for women

A women's psytrance outfit from Magus Fawn starts with something that flows, adds something that stretches, and keeps one warm layer close.
The flowing layer. The Psy Swirl Pink chiffon kimono ($75, S–5XL) pours hot-pink and magenta swirls, like waves of liquid light, from shoulder to hem, with a sash at the waist. Let it sail behind you on the walk between stages (read the story behind it: The Lady of the Waves).
The dancing layer. The Madriax Pink yoga leggings ($70, XS–XL) grow magenta and violet mandala blossoms on deep wine, with gold glinting at the ankle. They're four-way-stretch microfiber with a raised waistband that stays put through a twelve-hour set (read the story behind it: Facing the Wrong Way).
The sunset layer. The Acid Melt crushed velvet crop hoodie ($75) runs a rainbow of mirrored fractal flames in lime, magenta, orange, teal and violet, melting like a blacklight poster in the sun. It's 240 g/m² crushed velvet with a drawstring hood (read the story behind it: Make Way for Nana).
Add crystals and beadwork, and keep a cloak within reach. 4 a.m. is coming.
Psytrance festival outfits for men

A men's psytrance festival outfit from Magus Fawn is loose on the legs, light on top and covered overhead. Start with a printed cotton tee, add lantern pants that move like harem pants, top it with a bucket hat for the sunrise glare, and switch to brushed-fleece joggers once the night turns cold.
The pants. Harem pants are the psy classic, and the Amethyst Unicorn men's lantern pants ($80, XS–4XL) are our take: violet and lavender crystal formations under a swirling purple nebula, loose through the leg and gathered at the ankle.
The hat. The Alien Dimensions bucket hat ($50, XS–XL) wraps big-eyed alien heads and white Flower of Life geometry in violet, lavender and teal around your head, shade for the 7 a.m. sun and a beacon for your crew (read the story behind it: The Stranger at the Low-Water Crossing).
The night pants. When the floor cools, trade the lantern pants for the Angel Catcher Blue joggers ($100; $105 in 2XL, $108 in 3XL), cobalt sacred-geometry stars that glow under the lasers. They're a listed 308 g/m² with brushed vegan fleece inside and cuffed legs. They run slim, so order one or two sizes up for a looser fit.
Men's leggings are welcome too, under shorts by day and under joggers by night.
How cold does a psytrance festival get before sunrise?

Colder than the afternoon suggests. At the psytrance festivals Magus Fawn follows, nights can drop to 45–50°F at Rainbow Spirit in Australia, run 55–60°F at Ozora in Hungary and fall to 35–45°F around AfrikaBurn's psy camps in the Karoo. The low usually lands in the hour before sunrise, right as the sunrise set builds.
It feels colder than the number. You've danced since midnight, your shirt is damp and the dew is settling. Psy veterans everywhere answer with hooded cloaks and ponchos, pulled on around 4 a.m. and thrown open when the sun clears the hills.
The cloak for her. The Psytrance women's festival cloak ($250) is pastel liquid marbling in lavender, pink, gold, aqua and lime, like oil on water catching first light (read the story behind it: The Waterfall at 145 BPM).
The cloak for him. The Crystalline Forest men's festival cloak ($250) is a neon kaleidoscope of emerald, magenta, gold and violet crystal facets (read the story behind it: The Quartz Trail).
Every Magus Fawn festival cloak shares one build: a micro-mink outer, a fluffy faux-fur fleece lining in black or white (listed fabric weight 200 g/m²), a double front zipper, heavy drawstrings and four pockets: two deep side pockets and two interior stash pockets, one of them zippered. Unisex fit, XS–5XL. Nicholas, who wore a Sacred Grounds cloak in December 2023, put it simply: "First cloak ever. Super comfortable and warm. Fell asleep with it on. Kept me warm all night."
The layer under it. The Mystical Egypt cotton hoodie ($100) lights seven chakra circles up the center toward a pharaoh's face, wrapped in gold sacred-geometry linework on black. It's 100% cotton at 310 g/m², with a kangaroo pocket, in XS–6XL (read the story behind it: Motion to Dance).
The chill-out layer. For the dome or breakfast at camp, the Alien Cyber Punk Mech hooded blanket ($150) swirls cyan, teal, violet and crimson alien-mech forms around a glowing sacred-geometry star. It's 300 g/m² poly fleece, an oversized pullover with a cat-ear hood, a front quarter zip and an oversized front pocket, in one size (4XL).
A cloak is a warmth layer, not a rain shell, so pack a light poncho for showers.
Which psytrance festivals are worth planning for in 2027?
Boom Festival in Portugal returns July 18–25, 2027, for its 30th anniversary, and Ozora in Hungary runs from late July to early August. Magus Fawn's short list adds Rainbow Spirit in Australia on March 5–8, plus the psy camps at AfrikaBurn and Burning Man, both with 2027 dates now set.
| Festival | Where | When | Typical nights | Good to know |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Boom Festival | Idanha-a-Nova, Portugal, on a reservoir | July 18–25, 2027 | 60s°F (15–18°C) | Held in odd years only |
| O.Z.O.R.A. | Dádpuszta, near Ozora, Hungary | Late July to early August; dates TBA | 55–60°F (13–16°C) | Grew out of a gathering for the 1999 solar eclipse |
| Rainbow Spirit | Glenaroua, Victoria, Australia | March 5–8, 2027 (Labour Day weekend) | Can drop to 45–50°F (7–10°C) | Formerly Rainbow Serpent; renamed in 2023 and moved off Lexton for 2026 |
| AfrikaBurn | Tankwa Karoo, South Africa | April 26 to May 2, 2027 | 35–45°F (2–7°C) | Official Burning Man regional with psy camps |
| Burning Man | Black Rock Desert, Nevada | August 29 to September 6, 2027 | 45–55°F, sometimes 40s | Psy plays at sound camps and on art cars |
| Earthdance | Simultaneous events worldwide | Mid to late September | 45–55°F in Northern California | Psy, house and downtempo, with a shared Prayer for Peace |
| Envision | Uvita, Costa Rica | No 2027 edition planned | Warm and humid | Partly psy; kimono weather, no cloak needed |
Temperatures are typical ranges, not forecasts. The Burning Man Survival Guide notes that overnight lows can be in the 40s.
Psytrance festivals in the USA mostly live inside bigger gatherings: the sound camps and art cars of Burning Man and the regional burns, psy stages at transformational festivals, and Earthdance's September events. In Australia, the bush doof (the name imitates the kick drum) has carried psytrance into the bush since around 1992.
What should you look for in psytrance clothing brands?
Look for art made by people who dance in the scene, prints that hold their color through dust and washing, fabrics matched to the hour, and sizing that leaves room for layers. Magus Fawn designs every print itself and dye-sublimates it, so the colors won't fade and the image won't crack, on cotton as well as polyester.
- Art with meaning. Mandalas, fractals, sacred geometry and chakras, drawn by artists who know what they mean. We design everything ourselves; partners in Chatsworth, California, and in China print, cut and sew.
- A print that lasts. With dye sublimation, the ink becomes part of the fiber instead of a layer on top. Traditionally it only bonds to polyester; our cotton hoodies and tees use a newer process that dye-sublimates 100% cotton.
- A fabric for every hour. Cotton and chiffon for the afternoon, crushed velvet for sunset, fleece and faux-fur lining for the hour before sunrise.
- Pockets. Interior stash pockets keep your phone and earplugs close on the long walk back to camp.
- Vegan materials. Every Magus Fawn piece uses 100% vegan-friendly materials.
Every piece is made to order: 7–11 business days of production, then 6–14 business days of delivery, so give yourself up to 25 business days before you fly. For outerwear, the Magus Fawn FAQ suggests sizing up, "sometimes even 2 sizes up to fit extra layers under." All sales are final, so if you're between sizes, email your measurements to art@magusfawn.com. US shipping is free on orders of $70 or more.

Frequently asked questions
Is psytrance a type of EDM?
Yes. Psytrance is a fast, hypnotic branch of electronic dance music, usually around 140–150 BPM on full-on floors, with roots in the Goa trance parties of early-1990s India. It has its own culture of outdoor festivals, visionary art, sunrise sets and flowing, mandala-printed clothing, which is why it feels like a world of its own.
Do people dress up at psytrance festivals?
They do, though it's more handmade than costume-shop. Expect mandala and fractal prints, flowing pants, pixie hoods, hand-dyed scarves, crystals and beadwork, plus hooded cloaks once the night cools. Rainbow Spirit in Australia is known for a whole subculture of costumes and markets. Wear what makes you feel like yourself, only brighter.
What shoes do you wear to a psytrance festival?
Plenty of psytrance dancers go barefoot on soft grass, and plenty more wear dusty boots. For a multi-day festival, bring broken-in boots or sturdy sneakers for dust, stubble and the walk back to camp, plus warm socks for the cold hour before sunrise. Sandals are lovely for the chill-out dome and the lake.
Are Magus Fawn clothes vegan?
Yes. Magus Fawn uses 100% vegan-friendly materials across the line. Every festival cloak is lined in faux fur, an ultra-soft microfiber fleece in black or white, so the warmest layer in the range carries no animal fur at all. The joggers have brushed vegan fleece inside, and the cotton hoodies and tees are 100% cotton, printed with dye sublimation.
