Festival Dresses: Mesh, Lace and Tube Dresses for Dancing Till Sunrise

|Magus Fawn

A little before six in the morning, the stage lights lose their argument with the sky.

The lasers go pale, the kick drum keeps rolling, and the whole dance floor turns the color of a peach. That's when you notice the festival dresses. A sheer mesh hem flicks in time with the hi-hats. Black lace catches the first gold light at someone's collarbone. A lace-up back, cord swinging, spins past a stranger, who grins and spins too. Here and there a hooded cloak, pulled on hours ago, now hangs open, because the sun is coming and the music isn't stopping.

A great rave dress works quietly to look this easy: it moves when you move, and it carries art big enough to read across a field.

We're Magus and Lylyth Fawn, Los Angeles visionary artists, and every print in this guide began in our studio. Here's how we'd choose a festival dress for a friend: by cut first, then by art, then by what goes under it, over it and on your feet.

What kind of dress is best for dancing at a festival?

The best festival dress stretches with you, stays put when you jump and carries art bold enough to read across a field. Magus Fawn makes three cuts: a sheer mesh bodycon for layering, a lace cami dress for warm nights and a lace-up tube dress with long sleeves for a sculpted statement.

All three are short and dye-sublimated, so the ink becomes part of the fiber: colors won't fade and the image won't crack. Choose the cut by the night you're planning.

Cut How it feels Made for
Sheer mesh bodycon Light, airy, fitted Layering over a bodysuit or swimsuit; hot afternoons and packed rooms
Lace cami dress Soft jersey on spaghetti straps, backless Warm nights, house music sunsets, day-to-night looks
Lace-up tube dress Strapless, long-sleeved, skinny fit Techno, NYE and the photo by the stage

Then match the art to the music; our full guide to what to wear to a rave builds outfits for every genre.

What is a sheer mesh bodycon dress?

A sheer mesh bodycon dress is a fitted, stretchy dress in a light, open-weave fabric that hugs the body and lets air through. Magus Fawn's version is sleeveless with a racerback, in a listed 110 g/m² mesh of 95% poly and 5% spandex. The listing calls it sheer and see-through, so treat it as a layer.

"Bodycon" is short for body-conscious, and this is the lightest of our three cuts. Every mesh dress below comes in a regular fit, 2XS–5XL.

Cyber Punk Mech sheer mesh bodycon dress from the back: a racerback mesh rave dress in cobalt, teal and violet with white sacred geometry, worn in a festival crowd

For techno and bass. The Cyber Punk Mech women's sheer mesh bodycon dress ($55) stacks white-line sacred geometry, a Metatron's Cube and chains of Flower of Life circles, down the center of a cobalt, teal and violet machine world, with amber sparks glowing between the gears. It's a cathedral built by robots. The same art races the clock in our New Year's Eve love story Eleven Fifty-Nine.

Shroom Flower of Life Green sheer mesh bodycon dress: olive, moss green and crimson spirals of fanned ridges around floating spheres

For forest stages. The Shroom Flower of Life Green women's sheer mesh bodycon dress ($55) spirals olive, moss and leaf green through crimson: fanned, gill-like ridges curling around small floating spheres, with whirlpool rings turning near the hem. It's the forest floor after rain, made for string lights in the trees.

Mystical Egypt sheer mesh bodycon dress at a festival: black with gold linework, a pharaoh's face at the neckline and a column of chakra colors down the center

For psytrance at golden hour. The Mystical Egypt sheer mesh bodycon dress ($55) draws fine gold linework on black: a pharaoh's face at the neckline, seven glowing chakra points stacked from violet down to red, gold mandalas around them and an eye inside a pyramid at the hem. It's a map of the climb from root to crown, the same one a dancer follows in our retreat story Motion to Dance.

What do you wear under a mesh rave dress?

Wear a fitted base layer under a mesh rave dress: a black bodysuit, a bralette with bike shorts, a one-piece swimsuit or a slip. Magus Fawn lists its mesh as see-through, so the base layer becomes part of the outfit. Black lets the print glow; a bright color underneath changes the whole look.

In our photos the dense art reads bold, but plan your festival dress outfit around the listing's word, sheer.

  • A black bodysuit is the cleanest base, and it turns the mesh into stained glass. Our bodysuits offer art on art.
  • A tube top or bralette with bike shorts keeps it breezy and grass-ready; our rave tops guide has tube tops in matching art.
  • A one-piece swimsuit turns the dress into a lake-day cover-up.
  • A solid slip softens the sheerness for daytime and family stages.

What is a lace cami dress?

A lace cami dress is a short, slip-style dress on spaghetti straps, named for the camisole, with lace at the bodice. Magus Fawn's lace cami dress pairs a black lace bodice with a backless cut and a printed skirt in a listed 180 g/m² jersey, 95% poly and 5% spandex, in sizes S–4XL.

A camisole began as a sleeveless undershirt, and the slip dress, traditionally bias-cut on spaghetti straps, took that shape outside: it was "intended to be seen." Ours adds full-color art below the lace, in a regular fit.

Liquid Fire lace cami dress at a festival stage: black lace V bodice over a marbled print of gold, violet, magenta, orange and teal

For a house music sunset. The Liquid Fire women's lace cami dress ($65) pours molten marbling of gold, violet, magenta, orange and teal below a black lace V, like paint swirling in water just before it settles. It's made for the vocal track everyone waited for.

Egyptian Atlantis lace cami dress: black lace bodice over gold medallions, glyphs and temple columns on deep navy

For a beach rave. The Egyptian Atlantis women's lace cami dress ($65) lays gold medallions, glyphs and temple columns on deep navy and black under the same lace bodice, like the walls of a library that sank beneath the sea. Its design rode along to a house music beach rave in our road-trip story Side B Is Sunrise.

What is a lace-up tube dress?

A lace-up tube dress is a strapless, close-fitting dress that wraps the torso and laces closed over an open back. Magus Fawn's version adds long sleeves that sit off the shoulder, in a 90% poly, 10% spandex knit with a skinny fit, sizes S–5XL. It's the most sculpted of our three cuts.

The tube top started as 1950s beachwear and became a 1970s favorite; ours stretches it to a mini with sleeves. The laces are the showpiece when you turn around, and they cinch the fit snug.

Cosmic Cross Silver lace-up tube dress at a festival, seen from the back: silver and black filigree with long off-shoulder sleeves and a black cord lacing over an open back

For techno and New Year's Eve. The Cosmic Cross Silver lace-up tube dress ($70) mirrors silver, lavender-grey and black filigree from shoulder to hem, with small starbursts glinting between the lines like frost on an engraved cathedral door. Black cord crisscrosses the open back. Under strobes it reads as metal; at sunrise, soft lavender.

What shoes go with a festival dress?

Broken-in boots go with nearly every festival dress: combat boots, platform boots or ankle boots ground a short hem and handle grass, dust and long walks. Magus Fawn's lace cami dresses also suit sneakers for a daytime look, and the lace-up tube dress loves a platform. Fishnets or bright socks add color.

Pair the shoe to the cut:

  • Mesh bodycon: chunky boots balance the fitted line.
  • Lace cami: sneakers by day, ankle boots after dark.
  • Lace-up tube: a platform boot carries the sculpted silhouette, and fishnets echo the cord at your back.

Break them in on a long walk at home first, and save the stiletto for the rooftop party: grass and dust favor a flat sole or a wide platform.

The warm layer: a cloak over the dress

Layer from the legs up: leggings or fishnets under the hem, a long-sleeve base under mesh, then a warm layer that opens so the dress still shows. Magus Fawn's faux-fur-lined festival cloaks zip open down the front, so the print peeks through while the hood and lining keep you wrapped up.

The hour before sunrise is often the coldest of the night. A dress plus a cloak is the veteran's formula: dance in the dress all evening, then wrap up for the sunrise set.

Angel Catcher Light Purple women's festival cloak worn hood up at a festival: lavender and violet starburst lattice with a hexagonal medallion on the back, over fishnets and purple platform boots

The Angel Catcher Light Purple women's festival cloak ($250) spreads a lattice of white and lime-green starbursts over lavender and violet, with a violet hexagonal medallion glowing at the center of the back. Its photo is our whole formula in one frame: hood up, fishnets, purple platform boots. It's micro-mink poly with an ultra-soft microfiber fleece lining in black or white faux fur, a double front zipper and four pockets, unisex fit, XS–5XL. (Read its festival story: Twelve Cloaks Before Sunrise.)

Woman at a festival main stage in the Lucid women's festival cloak, unzipped over a rainbow bodysuit and fishnets: mirrored swirls of magenta, violet, lime and turquoise with a black faux-fur lining

Want the warm layer to be louder than the dress? The Lucid women's festival cloak ($250) mirrors magenta, violet, lime and turquoise in eddies of liquid color, brightest where the two front panels meet. Its photo shows the move this section is about: unzipped from collar to hem, with the black faux-fur lining framing whatever you wear beneath, so a black lace cami or a dark mesh dress becomes the calm center of a rainbow. Same build as the Angel Catcher, unisex fit in XS–5XL.

For outerwear, our FAQ suggests sizing up, "sometimes even 2 sizes up to fit extra layers under." For more cold-night layering, see our guide to what to wear to a winter rave.

Frequently asked questions

Can you dance in a bodycon dress?

Yes, as long as it stretches. A bodycon dress hugs the body, so the fabric has to move with you. Magus Fawn's sheer mesh bodycon dress blends 5% spandex into its listed 110 g/m² mesh, and the lace-up tube dress carries 10% spandex. Add bike shorts underneath and you can jump, spin and sit freely.

How do you keep a tube dress from slipping down?

Start with the right size, then use the laces. A lace-up back lets you cinch the bodice snug before you head out and loosen it between sets. Magus Fawn's lace-up tube dress has a skinny fit and long sleeves that sit off the shoulder. A strapless bra or double-sided fashion tape adds extra hold.

Can you wear a dress to a camping festival?

Absolutely. Pack bike shorts for sitting on grass and hay bales, broken-in boots for the walk back to camp and a warm layer for after dark. Short, stretchy dresses roll up small in a duffel. Magus Fawn dresses take a cold machine wash once you're home, and hanging them to dry keeps the colors bright.

What is the difference between a bodycon dress and a slip dress?

A bodycon dress hugs the body in stretch fabric, while a slip dress hangs from spaghetti straps in the shape of an underslip, traditionally cut on the bias. At Magus Fawn, the sheer mesh bodycon dress is the hugging cut, and the lace cami dress, with its lace bodice and spaghetti straps, belongs to the slip-dress family.
