Nine a.m. on the playa, and the sun is already leaning on your shoulders like an old friend who forgot his own strength.
By noon the thermometer is flirting with 100°F and the guy at the next camp is wearing cargo shorts, a velvet tank and an expression of total peace. Around three, the horizon goes soft and white as a dust storm rolls in off the mountains. At midnight those same men ride a glowing art car across the deep playa, hoods up, cloaks snapping in the wind.
That's the secret behind great burning man outfits for men: you're dressing one body for three different planets, every single day.
We're Magus and Lylyth Fawn, Los Angeles visionary artists whose whole life orbits transformational festivals. Here's the guys' playbook for Burning Man 2027, shift by shift, with costume ideas built from pieces you'll keep wearing long after the alkali washes out.
What do guys wear to Burning Man?
Guys at Burning Man dress in three shifts: shorts, a tank and a hat for 100°F days; a hood, goggles and loose long pants for dust storms; and a fleece-lined cloak over warm layers for the deep night. Magus Fawn designs burner clothing for men around that rhythm, so every piece earns at least two shifts.
| Shift | What the playa does | The men's formula |
|---|---|---|
| Playa day | 90–100°F, glare, low humidity | Hat, tank, cargo shorts |
| Dust storm | Wind and whiteout, any hour | Goggles, buff, a sleeveless hoodie, long pants |
| Golden hour | Low amber light, cooling air | A crushed velvet tee |
| Deep night | 45–55°F, sometimes the 40s | Fleece joggers, a hooded cloak, lights |
The dress code is whatever you dare: radical self-expression is one of Burning Man's Ten Principles, so a tutu and head-to-toe sacred geometry are equally on-brand. Black Rock City has no vending, so every shift rides in with you. For festival nights beyond the playa, see Men's Rave Outfits.
How hot is Burning Man during the day?
Burning Man days in Nevada's Black Rock Desert run 90–100°F, and the official Survival Guide says daytime temperatures "routinely exceed 100°F, with extremely low humidity." Magus Fawn's men's day kit is built for that heat: breathable shorts, a sleeveless top, a hat and sunscreen, plus shade breaks through the hottest hours.
The Survival Guide says to "consider laying low during the hottest part of the day," and Burning Man's Event FAQ notes that "much of the activity takes place at night."

The hat. For open playa at noon, the Survival Guide recommends "A wide brim hat (a chinstrap is useful in the wind)." For camp and the sunset ride, our pick is the Solar Eclipse snapback hat ($40, one size, adjustable): golden eclipsed suns beside a Flower of Life, day and night sharing one sky, which is exactly a burner's schedule.

The shorts. Cargo pockets hold sunscreen, lip balm and a bike-lock key. The Electric Dragonscape cargo shorts ($65–$70 depending on size, S–5XL) carry an ice-blue crystalline dragon in faceted, electric scales, the coolest colors you can bring to the hottest hour, in a denim-like 190 g/m² polyester with a button waistband.

The top. Velvet in the desert sounds like a dare, but a ringer tank is all shoulders and air. The Galactic Alien Oracle crushed velvet tank top ($60, S–5XL) is lavender and periwinkle filigree that reads like an oracle's ceremonial armor, in lightweight 240 g/m² crushed velvet that throws back every art-car light once the sun goes down.
Golden hour: the velvet shift

Around seven the mountains turn rose and blue, the air loses its edge, and the low sun skims across the playa at an angle that makes every texture glow. This is the hour to swap the tank for sleeves, and crushed velvet was made for it: the pile catches low light the way water does.
The Liquid Fire crushed velvet tee ($60, XS–5XL) is molten marbling in orange, red, gold and violet, like poured flame, so at sunset you match the sky, and later you match the fire. It's 240 g/m² crushed velvet, soft enough to wear straight through to the afters under a cloak.
Dust storm looks: when the playa goes white
You'll know it's coming when the horizon loses its edges. Then the world shrinks to an arm's length of soft white, one of the most beautiful things you'll ever stand inside. The Survival Guide packs "Goggles to protect eyes during dust storms" and a dust mask, and when the whiteout hits: "Now's the time to use that dust mask and goggles you brought."
- Goggles around your neck from breakfast on.
- A buff in a cargo pocket. Beards collect playa like a lint trap.
- Loose long pants with cuffed ankles.

Our storm piece is a sleeveless hoodie, the playa's most underrated garment: arms free in the heat, a hood up the second the horizon blurs. The Temple of Sound cotton sleeveless hooded tank ($80) shows a temple built from speaker cones and eyes around a glowing altar, a shrine for anyone orbiting the sound camps on the Esplanade (its story: Play for the Floor). It's 100% cotton at 310 g/m², with a kangaroo pocket for goggles; wash cold and air dry, since cotton shrinks 3–5% on the first wash.
Back at camp, shake everything out downwind; our guide to washing festival cloaks, velvet and fleece covers playa dust at home.
What is a good Burning Man costume for men?
A good Burning Man costume for men is a character you can live inside for twelve hours: one bold statement piece, comfortable layers underneath and nothing that sheds onto the playa. Magus Fawn's approach starts from the art. Pick a myth or a world you love, then build the costume around a printed garment that tells it.

The Atlantean priest. Picture a temple wall that sank beneath the sea and came back up glowing. The Egyptian Atlantis men's festival cloak ($250) covers deep navy in gold and bronze hieroglyph panels, temple columns, pyramids and birds. Wear it open over a bare chest at sunset, goggles pushed up like a crown, then zip it shut when the desert cools.

The sea captain, very lost. The Kraken, the sea monster of Scandinavian sailors' legends, has no business in a desert, which is exactly why it works. The Mechanical Kraken crushed velvet men's polo ($65, S–5XL) wraps you in dark slate and teal biomechanical tentacles, with a collar. Add a captain's hat and a brass telescope, and ask everyone you meet which way the ocean is.
One costume rule: whole garments beat glued-on feathers and sequins, which become MOOP.
Deep-night looks: the cloak hour on the open playa
Once the sun drops, the playa stages its favorite plot twist. The temperature story and lighting tips live in How Cold Does Burning Man Get at Night?.
The legs. Your knees feel the night first. Pull fleece joggers or long pants over your day shorts at sunset, while you're still warm, and save the shorts for tomorrow's noon.

The cloak. On Saturday night the whole city gathers in a ring around the Man and watches it burn, the most ceremonial night on the playa. Dress like the keeper of the spellbook. Enochian Vision takes its name from the angelic magick the Elizabethan scholar John Dee and the scryer Edward Kelley recorded in the 1580s, and the Enochian Vision Red men's festival cloak ($250) reads like an illuminated grimoire: a rose-red pentagram in a circle, panels of sigil script, an open book and a carved altar on dark plum (its story: Write One True Thing). Every Magus Fawn cloak shares one build: a micro-mink outer, a microfiber fleece lining in black or white faux fur, a listed fabric weight of 200 g/m², a double front zipper and four pockets, two of them interior stash pockets. Unisex fit, XS–5XL. Kevin, reviewing a Lunar Eclipse cloak in March 2025: "Super soft and warm."
Pack one spare warm layer for someone else; that's the whole story of The Hoodie That Went Around. For one first-timer's cloak, from a whiteout to the Temple, read The Laminated Burner.

Frequently asked questions
How many outfits do you need for Burning Man?
Plan Burning Man outfits by shift rather than by day: a day look for 100°F sun, a dust look with goggles and a hood, and a night look with warm layers and a cloak. Most burners repeat bottoms and outer layers all week and rotate tops, costumes and accessories, since there's no vending to fill gaps.
What shoes should men wear to Burning Man?
Men at Burning Man usually wear closed-toe boots or sturdy sneakers, because the playa is fine alkali dust that gets everywhere and the walks between camps are long. Bring warm socks for night, and a second pair of shoes: the official Survival Guide lists appropriate footwear for if the playa gets wet.
Do you need goggles at Burning Man?
Yes. The official Burning Man Survival Guide lists goggles to protect your eyes during dust storms, along with a particle or dust mask. Whiteouts can arrive at any hour, so experienced burners wear goggles around their neck or on their forehead from morning until they go to sleep, then pull them down when the wind rises.
