On Virginia Key, a theme camp is unrolling a red carpet straight into the surf, and a man in a sequined tailcoat is rehearsing his bow to the pelicans.
Across the water, the Miami skyline turns gold, then rose, then electric blue, a backdrop no stage crew could build. Then the sea breeze picks up, salty and cool, and every cape on the beach lifts at once, like a curtain going up.
That breeze is your first clue to what to wear to Love Burn. Days here are Florida-bright. Nights slide into the 60s with wind off the water, and the costume parade only gets bolder after dark.
We're Magus and Lylyth Fawn, Los Angeles visionary artists whose whole life orbits burns and the dance floor. Here's our guide to Love Burn outfits for 2027: beach-day looks, Showtime costumes, the warm layer for the walk home, and how to dress in the spirit of a burn.
What is Love Burn?
Love Burn is a weekend participatory arts event on the Virginia Key beaches in Miami, Florida, held every February since 2014. It's volunteer-run, built from interactive art, theme camps, music and a beachfront burn, with nothing for sale except ice. Love Burn calls itself a community gathering, not a festival, so call it a burn.
Every participant is asked to volunteer at least four hours, and the event honors Burning Man's Ten Principles plus consent, even though its official site notes it has been independent of Burning Man Project since 2024. If you've built regional burn outfits for the playa, Flipside or Apogaea, the rhythm of a Love Burn Miami day will feel familiar (our guide to what a regional burn is maps the wider family):
| When | What Virginia Key does | What to wear |
|---|---|---|
| Midday | Florida sun, steady wind, sometimes dust | Swimwear for wading, shorts, a hat |
| Golden hour | Skyline glow, costumes come out | Your Showtime look |
| After dark | 60–68°F with a sea breeze | A hooded cloak over the costume |
| Any hour | A Florida shower rolls through | A poncho in your bag |
How cold does Love Burn get at night?
Mild by burn standards, cool by Miami standards. Love Burn's February nights usually sit around 60–68°F, and the wind off the water makes bare skin feel cooler than the number. The event's own packing list includes a warm coat, "furry or otherwise," and veterans wrap up for the long walk home along the shore.
The Love Burn survival guide also notes that strong winds are common daily. The answer is one hooded layer that opens like a cape and closes like a sleeping bag.

The Shroom Flower of Life Teal women's festival cloak ($250, unisex fit, XS–5XL) is the sea breeze in garment form: aqua, teal and violet mushrooms mirrored down the back, feathered wings unfurling around them, a Flower of Life emblem just below the hood and spiral medallions swirling at the hem like tide pools. The fluffy microfiber fleece lining comes in black or white faux fur, the double front zipper lets you wear it open as a stage cape until the wind turns, and four pockets (two interior, one zippered) hold a headlamp and little gifts for new friends. Size up for costume layers, sometimes even two sizes. Its mushroom kingdom has a story of its own in Lost on Purpose.
Write your name inside it, as the guide asks. For the full layering playbook, read our guide to staying warm at a festival at night.
Beach-day looks for Virginia Key
The survival guide packs swimwear for wading in the ocean right beside the costumes, so start the morning in something that moves from the camp kitchen to ankle-deep surf.

The Mechanical Kraken one-piece swimsuit ($65, XS–3XL) wraps you in a sea monster: symmetrical biomechanical tentacles coiling down a deep navy field in silver and teal, glinting like jewels on a ship's hull. After sunset it doubles as a bodysuit under an open cloak. The kraken surfaces again in our cruise love story, The Lights Under the Wake.
For bikers rather than waders, the Blue Feathery Fractal unisex cotton shorts ($65, S–5XL) swirl indigo and violet feathered fractals across a sea-green field, finished with a black drawstring waist. They're the only feathers on Virginia Key that will never molt into the sand, which your Leave No Trace crew will appreciate.
Top either look with the Alien Mycelium Pink snapback ($40): a hot-pink crown etched with black tribal linework around an alien face, over a black brim patterned with fine geometry. Pair it with the shorts and your order crosses our free US shipping line at $70.
What is the Love Burn 2027 theme?
Love Burn 2027's theme is "Showtime!", an homage to live performance. The theme essay calls for tap shoes, flaming torches, showgirl vests and jazz hands, and this year's art grants lean toward performance groups and live acts. For your wardrobe, that means stage costumes: ringmasters, showgirls, acrobats, crooners and Broadway leads on the sand.
Radical self-expression is the whole brief, so dress like the act you'd perform if the spotlight found you. Three costume starters:

The showgirl. The Mystical Egypt tube top bodysuit ($75, XS–2XL) is an opening number with an ancient soul: black with fine gold linework, a pharaoh's face crowning the bust and seven glowing chakra orbs running violet to red down the center, with strappy cut-outs at the sides. Add a sequined cape, fishnets and a feather-free headdress, and the red carpet is yours.

The ringmaster. The Solar Eclipse crushed velvet tank top ($60, S–5XL) sets golden eclipsed suns ringed in fire around a glowing Flower of Life. Velvet catches every LED on the beach, so finish it with a top hat and a booming voice.
The acrobat. The Fuchsia Swirl men's festival leggings ($65, XS–3XL) pour hot magenta liquid swirls traced in gold and black down both legs. They also cover your legs at dusk, when the mosquitoes, sand fleas and no-see-ums on the survival guide's list come out to see the show.
Fire performers: wear natural fibers like cotton and keep velvet and fleece away from the flame, as our fire spinning story Wait for the Wind explains.
Why do burners avoid wearing brand logos?
Because of decommodification, one of the principles Love Burn honors. A burn aims for spaces free of commercial sponsorship, transactions and advertising, so a giant brand name on your chest reads like a billboard. Veterans wear art instead, or turn a logo tee inside out. Love Burn backs it up with a simple rule: no vending, only ice for sale.
Love Burn's principles page describes community spaces "unmediated by commercial sponsorships, transactions, or advertising."
Graceful habits keep it that way:
- Flip or cover the big logos. A favorite tee with a giant brand name can go inside out for the weekend, or take a strip of gaffer tape.
- Shop before you go. The event's ticket page says anyone caught selling wares or skills will be asked to leave, so everything you wear arrives with you.
That spirit includes us, happily: at a burn, our clothes should be art you carry, never merch. If someone admires your cloak, tell them the story behind the design. For a beach burn love story where nothing is for sale and everything is given, read Fake Boyfriend, Real Fire.
What should you pack for Love Burn?
Pack for camping, costumes and changeable weather. Love Burn's survival guide lists costumes, swimwear for wading, a warm coat, a rain poncho, goggles for dust, sunglasses, hats, bug repellent and a headlamp, plus EL wire or LED lights on your outfit so people can see you after dark. Add a gallon of water per person per day.
For the wardrobe side, veterans add two tricks:
- Costumes in a plastic bin. The guide suggests bins to keep gear dry when Florida rain arrives.
- A dry change of clothes. Wet costumes plus a sea breeze make a chilly combination.
A backpack is optional at a venue this size, so a chest bag hits the sweet spot. The Jeweled Dribbler chest bag ($50) shows an impish magenta creature with a long curling tail playing with a little golden orb on an aqua-and-violet bubble field. Headlamp, sunscreen and phone ride along, and both hands stay free for jazz hands.

Frequently asked questions
Is Love Burn still a Burning Man regional event?
No. Love Burn's official site says it is no longer affiliated with Burning Man Project as of 2024. It still honors the Ten Principles, including gifting, decommodification, radical self-expression and leaving no trace, and adds consent as a core value. Burner culture runs through the whole weekend, from volunteer teams to theme camps.
Is Love Burn clothing optional?
Only in certain areas. Love Burn's survival guide says Zones 5, 6, 7 and 8, inside Historic Virginia Key Beach Park, are clothing optional, and clothing is required everywhere else because the event takes place in a public city park. Plan a swimsuit, costume or cover-up for the rest of the grounds.
Can you swim at Love Burn?
Yes, for wading. Love Burn's packing list includes swimwear for wading in the ocean, so a dip in the surf fits the beach-day plan. Pack a towel and a dry change of clothes, because the sea breeze cools wet skin quickly once the sun drops, and wade with a buddy rather than alone.
How much are Love Burn tickets?
As of June 2026, a general adult ticket for Love Burn 2027 costs $426, and the official ticket page estimates about $499.95 once fees and tax are added. Parking passes cost extra, starting at $150 plus fees for a car. No tickets are sold at the gate, and transfers run through the official ticket site.
