The Coldest Music Festivals in North America (and What to Wear to Each)

|Magus Fawn

The kick drum lands, and a hundred small clouds of breath rise from the rail into the lasers.

They glow violet, then green, then gold. The dancer beside you has her hood up and the faux-fur lining pulled close under her chin. The grass has gone stiff and silver under your boots, and the bass sounds bigger in the cold, as if the air thickened just to carry it.

Ask the cold-weather crowd and they'll tell you: the coldest music festivals are often the most beautiful ones. Desert stars sharpen, and strangers trade hand warmers and wake up as campmates.

We're Magus and Lylyth Fawn, Los Angeles visionary artists who make cold-night layers. Here are twelve of the coldest music festivals in North America, ranked by night temperature, with 2027 status and an outfit note for each.

Why do high-elevation festivals get so cold at night?

Air cools as you climb. The lapse rate is the rate at which temperature "falls with altitude," and the international standard atmosphere uses about 3.6°F per 1,000 feet. That's why Sonic Bloom saw June nights in the 40s°F, why Apogaea's 85–90°F days cool to around 50–55°F, and why a mountain festival can feel like a different season.

Dry air is the second ingredient. Wikipedia's entry on diurnal temperature variation notes that "high desert regions typically have the greatest diurnal-temperature variations," up to 40–50°F in higher-elevation arid areas, and that the more humid the air, the smaller the swing. That's why Burning Man can pass 90°F by day and drop into the 40s by night, while humid Florida nights stay mild.

Which winter music festivals can you go to in 2027?

North America's winter festival season opens with Countdown NYE in San Bernardino on December 31, 2026 and January 1, 2027. Gem & Jam follows in Tucson in early February, Love Burn gathers on Miami's Virginia Key beach on February 11–14, and Beyond Wonderland closes the cold season at the NOS Events Center on March 26–27.

Love Burn is the warm one, with sea-breeze nights of 60–68°F; our Love Burn outfits guide covers it. Between the big dates, indoor raves are warm on the floor and cold in the queue.

Frequently asked questions

Which festivals have the biggest temperature swing between day and night?

Dry, high-desert and mountain-valley festivals swing the most. Burning Man runs from 90–100°F by day to 45–55°F at night, and its FAQ says pre-dawn can approach freezing. Shambhala pairs 85–95°F days with 45–55°F nights, and Dirtybird Campout x Northern Nights pairs the same hot days with nights in the 50s. Pack for the night, then peel off by day.

Is a desert festival or a mountain festival colder at night?

It depends on the month and the elevation. On our list, the coldest nights belong to the Okanogan Barter Faire in the mountains of north-central Washington, at 25–35°F in October. Gem & Jam's Tucson desert follows at 35–45°F in February, while June mountain events like Apogaea bring cool nights around 50–55°F. Both reward a fleece-lined outer layer.

Which Canadian music festivals have cold nights?

Shambhala, in British Columbia's Kootenay mountains, is the classic one: late-July days of 85–95°F, then nights of 45–55°F, and its help center tells guests to expect cold nights. Bass Coast in Merritt, BC, runs in mid-July with nights in the 50s°F. For both, pack a hoodie and a warm hooded layer for the late sets.

Which Magus Fawn pieces have a fleece lining?

Our festival cloaks are lined with fluffy faux-fur microfiber fleece in black or white, soft against the skin on a frosty night, from the hood to the hem. Our joggers carry brushed vegan fleece inside, behind a soft cotton-feel face. All materials are 100% vegan friendly.
