Ticket 214 is a small square of cardboard, and tonight it holds your whole winter.
Twenty minutes ago you were out on the sidewalk in November, hood up, hands deep in your pockets, watching a pair of LED gloves trace slow circles to stay warm. Then a wristband scan, a quick bag check, and a wall of warm air rolled over you, thick with haze and body heat. You handed your cloak across the coat-check counter, tucked the ticket into a zipped pocket and walked onto the floor in a velvet tee.
Now the bass has stopped being a sound and turned into weather. Three songs in, everyone who wore a puffer jacket onto the floor is doing the slow math of where to put it. You're just dancing.
That's the indoor rave in one picture: crisp outside, tropical inside, and a coat-check counter standing between the two like the border crossing into a better country.
Knowing what to wear to an indoor rave mostly means knowing how to cross that border twice, once on the way in and once at 2 a.m. on the way out. We're Magus and Lylyth Fawn, Los Angeles visionary artists who design for exactly these nights. Here's how to dress for the club, the arena and the event hall, and for the cold walk on either side.
Indoor rave outfits: dress for the room, carry the cold
Dress for the dance floor and carry the cold separately. The Magus Fawn indoor rave formula is a light, breathable top you'd happily wear at 2 a.m. under the lights, a warm piece you can tie around your waist, and an outer layer for the queue and the parking lot that you either check at the door or wear open.
Outdoor festivals ask you to live in your warm layer all night. Indoor raves flip that: a few cold minutes outside, five hot hours inside. So pick the base first, then ask one question about every warm piece: where will this live while I'm dancing? The coat check, your waist, or your shoulders, worn open like a cape.
Is it hot inside an indoor rave?
Usually, yes. A packed club or arena floor fills with body heat, stage lights and haze, and the roof keeps all of it in, so the room often feels like summer while the street outside stays crisp. Magus Fawn's answer is a light, breathable base layer: a sleeveless hoodie, a crushed velvet tee or leggings.

The middle of the floor runs warmer than the edges, and the rail warmest of all. Dress for the hottest spot you plan to stand in.
For him, the hot-room top. The Mechanical Kraken men's sleeveless hoodie ($75) coils a mechanical kraken down the front, teal, steel-blue and silver tentacles wrapped around a riveted spine with glowing orbs drifting at its sides. It's 180 g/m² jersey (95/5) in S–2XL, with a hood for the walk out and bare arms for the floor (read the story behind the design: The Lights Under the Wake).
For anyone, the base tee. The Solar Eclipse crushed velvet T-shirt ($60) lines up a row of black eclipse discs with golden coronas across the chest, a silver Flower of Life glowing beneath them inside rings of electric blue, on black. It's 240 g/m² crushed velvet in XS–5XL, and the eclipse artwork also stars in our love story Two Minutes of Totality.
Rooms also concentrate sound. According to the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders, concerts run 94–110 dBA, and long or repeated exposure at or above 85 dBA can cause hearing loss. Earplugs ride in a pocket and go in before the headliner.
What's the difference between a club rave outfit and an arena rave outfit?
A club rave outfit is built for a small, dark, crowded room close to the speakers: compact, sleek and easy to carry. An arena or event-hall rave outfit is built for distance: long entry lines, walks between stages and big parking lots. Magus Fawn dresses clubs in one statement piece, and arenas in layers you can carry all night.
| Venue | What the night feels like | The outfit move |
|---|---|---|
| Club | One or two rooms, a short line, a tiny coat check, low light | Sleek base, one bold print, a cloak checked at the door |
| Warehouse | Raw space, a location drop, a coat check by the door, an outdoor yard | Warm base, since the building itself can run cold in winter |
| Arena or event hall | Big halls, several stages, long queues, open-air walks between buildings | A layer you can carry or tie on, plus a small bag |
The club rave outfit. Clubs are dark, so one bright piece reads from across the room. The Electric Dragonscape crushed velvet polo ($65) spreads an ice-blue, cobalt and violet crystalline dragon across the chest, wings out, a glowing orb at its heart. A collar reads polished in a dressier club, and the velvet glows under strobes, in S–5XL. Read the dragon's own story in Let Her Have the Tube.

Over it, for the line: the Cosmic Cross Silver men's festival cloak ($250). Silver-white filigree geometry covers the back on smoky grey, like a cathedral window at night: sleek in a dark room, easy to find in a crowd. It's the design behind our Brooklyn warehouse story, Fifty-Two Minutes to Doors. Every Magus Fawn festival cloak shares one build: a micro-mink outer, a fluffy faux-fur fleece lining in black or white (listed fabric weight 200 g/m²), a double front zipper, heavy drawstrings and four pockets, two deep side pockets plus two interior stash pockets, one zippered. Unisex fit, XS–5XL.
The arena and event-hall outfit. Arena nights are marathons. Countdown NYE, for example, returns to the NOS Events Center in San Bernardino on December 31 and January 1, with five covered stages in event halls and nights outside around 40–45°F. Our Countdown NYE outfit guide covers that night stage by stage. For every other big room, a warm layer you can tie on beats a heavy one you have to hold.
How does coat check work at a club or arena rave?
You hand your outer layer over on the way in, pay the fee, and get a numbered ticket. At the end of the night, you hand the ticket back and get your coat. Magus Fawn's tip: move your phone, ID, cards, keys and earplugs into a small bag before you hand anything over, because the cloak's pockets go with it.

Coat check is why a full cloak works indoors: a warm queue and a free dance floor. A few habits make it smooth:
- Photograph your ticket the second you get it, then tuck it somewhere zipped.
- Have small cash or a card ready. Fees and payment methods vary by venue.
- Tip if you can. The Takeout's coat-check etiquette column reports that $2 is "a nice, friendly tip for a standard coat."
- Plan your pickup. The coat-check line peaks at the last song. Leave one track early, or dance through the rush and collect when it clears.
The stash upgrade. The Alien Cyber Punk Mech chest bag ($50) carries a cyan, violet and pink alien-mech mandala on dark navy. It sits flat against your chest, where your hands find it in a crowd, and it carries the coat-check ticket home with everything else.
Where do you put your jacket at a rave with no coat check?
Wear it, tie it or skip it. A zip-front layer can stay on all night, opened up on the floor. A hoodie or crop hoodie ties around your waist by the sleeves. Magus Fawn's no-coat-check outfit uses exactly those two moves, with the heaviest layer left at home or in the car.

Smaller clubs and house parties often skip coat check. A knotted crop hoodie stays put through a whole set and is back on in five seconds on the patio.
For her, the tie-on layer. The Sacred Geo women's crushed velvet crop hoodie ($75) lays white Flower of Life line grids over plum and mauve, with a large Om symbol curling around one side and lavender spirals down the sleeves. It's 240 g/m² crushed velvet with a hooded crop and long sleeves in S–2XL (read the first-burn story it stars in: The Laminated Burner).
Underneath, the Angel Catcher pink yoga leggings ($70) unfold magenta and rose feathered wings over charcoal, with a glowing lotus medallion at each knee, built to catch a strobe (read the story behind the design: Twelve Cloaks Before Sunrise). They're four-way-stretch microfiber at 225 g/m² with a raised waistband, in XS–XL.
Shoes for concrete floors and the long walk out
Indoor floors are concrete, polished wood or sticky club tile, and you'll stand on them for hours. Broken-in sneakers with cushioned soles, or flat boots you've already danced in, carry you from doors to close. Closed toes are the move on a crowded floor, where every neighbor is also dancing.
Arenas add distance: parking structures, security lines and halls a long walk apart. Our rave outfit guide covers shoes for every kind of rave, and our first rave guide covers the rest of a first night out.
How to size and order indoor rave layers
Size the outer layer for what goes underneath. The Magus Fawn FAQ suggests sizing up on cloaks and hoodies, "sometimes even 2 sizes up to fit extra layers under." Base layers like leggings and tees stay your usual size, because they're the pieces you dance in all night.
Every piece is made to order: 7–11 business days of production, then 6–14 business days of delivery. For New Year's Eve, order by Monday, November 23 to cover the slowest case; for Christmas Eve, the date is Tuesday, November 17. All sales are final, so if you're between sizes, email your measurements to art@magusfawn.com (we typically reply within 1–2 business days). US shipping is free on orders of $70 or more.

Frequently asked questions
Do you tip at coat check at a rave?
Yes, when you can. Coat-check attendants handle a mountain of jackets on a big night, and a small tip is a friendly thank-you. The Takeout's coat-check etiquette column reports that $2 is "a nice, friendly tip for a standard coat," with a few dollars more for extra items. Pay the fee first, then tip on top.
Can you bring a bag into a club rave?
Usually a small one. Bag rules vary by venue, and many clubs and arenas post size limits and search bags at the door, so read the event's FAQ before you go. A slim chest bag or fanny pack that sits against your body is the easiest to carry and keeps your phone, ID and earplugs in reach.
How do you keep your phone safe at a rave?
Keep your phone zipped in a bag or pocket worn on the front of your body, never in a back pocket. A slim chest bag or fanny pack sits where your hands can feel it in a crowd. Take it out only when you need it, and save a friend's number and your coat-check ticket photo before the doors.
Should you leave your jacket in the car for a rave?
It works when the car is close. Leaving your heaviest layer in the car saves a coat-check fee and line, but the walk in and out happens at the coldest hours of the night. A middle path: wear a hoodie or crop hoodie you can tie around your waist, and leave only the big coat behind.
