The saguaros go black against a tangerine sky. Somewhere out past the last streetlight a sound system thumps through the creosote, and the air that was in the high 60s at four o'clock is heading for the 40s. Everyone who's done this before has a hood in the car.
That's the Southwest festival year in one evening. Four states, desert from the Sonoran to the Great Basin, and a calendar that runs from a Tucson fairground in February to a speedway on New Year's Eve. The days are generous. The nights are the plot twist.
We're Magus and Lylyth Fawn, Los Angeles visionary artists who have spent a lot of nights in Southwest dust. Here are the music festivals to plan around in Arizona, Nevada, Utah and New Mexico in 2027, with dates from each official site, NOAA night lows for each venue, and what we'd wear to each.
What are the best music festivals in the Southwest in 2027?
The Southwest's 2027 calendar runs from Gem & Jam in Tucson (February 5–7) and M3F in Phoenix (March 5–6) through Hydrophonic in New Mexico and EDC Las Vegas in May, Das Energi in Utah in August and Burning Man's Black Rock City, then Decadence Arizona for New Year's. Magus Fawn checked every date on official sites.
| Festival | Where | Dates | Night low (NOAA normal) | Spoke guide |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Gem & Jam | Pima County Fairgrounds, Tucson, AZ | Feb 5–7, 2027 | 43°F (Feb) | Gem & Jam outfits |
| M3F | Steele Indian School Park, Phoenix, AZ | Mar 5–6, 2027 | 55°F (Mar) | Below |
| Hydrophonic | Tico Time River Resort, Aztec, NM | May 13–16, 2027 | 41°F (May) | Below |
| EDC Las Vegas | Las Vegas Motor Speedway, NV | May 14–16 and 21–23, 2027 | 64°F (May) | EDC Las Vegas outfits |
| Das Energi | The Saltair, Magna, UT | Aug 6–8, 2027 | 69°F (Aug) | Below |
| Burning Man | Black Rock City, NV | Aug 29–Sep 6, 2027 | 59°F (Aug), 49°F (Sep) | Burning Man outfits |
| Decadence Arizona | Phoenix Raceway, Avondale, AZ | Dec 30–31, 2026 | 42°F (Dec) | Decadence Arizona outfits |
Night lows are NOAA NCEI 1991–2020 monthly normals from the nearest station with temperature records to each venue, read October 28, 2026; the stations are named in the next section. Decadence Arizona's 2026 edition rings in 2027, so it closes the list.
How cold do Southwest festivals get at night?
Colder than the daytime suggests, and the coldest isn't where you'd guess. NOAA's normals put May nights near Hydrophonic, in northern New Mexico, at 41°F, colder than February near Gem & Jam (43°F) or December near Decadence Arizona (42°F). Late-summer Black Rock drops from 59°F in August to 49°F in September.
| Station (NOAA 1991–2020) | Festival | Month | Average high | Average low |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Aztec Ruins NM | Hydrophonic | May | 79.8°F | 41.0°F |
| Litchfield Park | Decadence Arizona | December | 64.5°F | 42.0°F |
| Saguaro National Park | Gem & Jam | February | 67.6°F | 43.4°F |
| Gerlach | Burning Man | August / September | 93.0°F / 83.9°F | 58.9°F / 49.3°F |
| Phoenix Sky Harbor | M3F | March | 78.1°F | 54.5°F |
| North Las Vegas | EDC Las Vegas | May | 89.4°F | 63.9°F |
| Garfield, Utah | Das Energi | August | 88.9°F | 69.3°F |
The Hydrophonic number is the one to remember. The Aztec Ruins station logs about three May nights a year at or below freezing and roughly a dozen at 40°F or below, while the afternoons reach 80°F. A nearly 40-degree swing between the river swim and the late set is the Southwest in a sentence.
Arizona: Gem & Jam, M3F and Decadence
Arizona holds three of the region's festivals, and they span the whole cool season.
Gem & Jam celebrates its 18th year on February 5–7, 2027 at the Pima County Fairgrounds in Tucson, according to its official site. Our Gem & Jam outfit guide covers the fairgrounds camping and the crystal crowd.
M3F returns to Steele Indian School Park in central Phoenix on March 5–6, 2027, per the M3F FAQ. It's a family-friendly city festival: children 12 and under get in free with a ticketed adult. There's no re-entry and no official parking, so Valley Metro and rideshare are the move, and bags must be clear and no larger than 12 by 12 by 8 inches, with small fanny packs and wallets exempt.

For the youngest festival-goers, the Rose Quartz Unicorn kids' hoodie ($75) has a unicorn rearing up from a field of pink and magenta crystals. It's one of just two designs in our kids' line that never appears on a cloak, so the look is all theirs. Stretchy scuba at 230 g/m² (95% poly, 5% spandex) shrugs off pilling, the hood has no drawstring so it's kid-safe, and there's a kangaroo pocket for small treasures. Sizes 2XS to XL.
Decadence Arizona closes the year on December 30–31, 2026 at Phoenix Raceway in Avondale. It's 18+, it runs until 3 a.m., and the West Valley gets properly cold; our Decadence Arizona outfit guide has the bag rules, the coat check and two cloaks for it.
Nevada: EDC Las Vegas and Black Rock City
EDC Las Vegas runs two weekends at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway in 2027, May 14–16 and May 21–23, according to the official site. May nights there average 64°F at the North Las Vegas station, and our EDC Las Vegas outfit guide covers the rules, the stages and the 4 a.m. breeze.

A desert afternoon wants a brim. The Alien Mycelium snapback ($40) draws an alien face rising among mushroom forms in crisp black-and-white linework, a visitor from the forest floor. Underground, mycelium links root to root in one hidden network, and a festival crowd works the same way. It's 150 g/m² polyester that breathes, with an adjustable snapback in one size that fits most.
Burning Man builds Black Rock City again from August 29 to September 6, 2027, with the 2027 theme "Spellbound," according to burningman.org. The normals at Gerlach, the nearest station, drop nearly ten degrees between August and September nights. Our guides to Burning Man outfits for women, Burning Man outfits for men and how cold Burning Man gets at night cover the playa in full.

For the deep-playa nights, our pick is the Pink Melted Oasis women's festival cloak ($250). Hot pink and magenta marbling runs veined with violet and white, like melted candy or fresh-poured paint, and our own product notes say it belongs to the effigy burn and the stroll back to camp. It's micro-mink poly outside with an ultra-soft faux fur lining in black or white, a listed fabric weight of 200 g/m², a double front zipper, heavy drawstrings and four pockets. Unisex fit, XS to 5XL. On a dusty night that pink is easy to find from across the playa.
Utah and New Mexico: Das Energi and Hydrophonic
Das Energi returns to The Saltair, the concert hall near the Great Salt Lake at 12408 W Saltair Drive in Magna, on August 6–8, 2027, and it's now "3 nights strong," per the Das Energi info page. It's 18+ with no re-entry and no camping. Hours run 5 p.m. to 2 a.m. (Sunday 4 p.m. to 1 a.m.), and lockers are on site. Headdresses are on the not-allowed list. August nights out there stay mild, near 69°F at the Garfield station, so this is a velvet-and-tee festival rather than a cloak one.
Hydrophonic is the region's river festival: a "boutique electronic music and arts gathering" at Tico Time River Resort on the Animas River in Aztec, New Mexico, 20 minutes south of Durango, on May 13–16, 2027, according to its official site. Walk-in camping comes with the general admission pass, there's swimming at the beach, and a child pass covers kids 12 and under with a parent or guardian. Elsewhere in the state, our New Mexico festival guide covers Zozobra in Santa Fe, the Mariachi Spectacular in Albuquerque and chamber music in Angel Fire.

This is where the cloak earns its keep. With May lows of 41°F at the nearest station, Hydrophonic's camp nights run a degree colder than December nights near Decadence Arizona. The Orange Mushroom Flower of Life women's festival cloak ($250) looks like half a desert sunset: tangerine, flame orange, scarlet and rust swirl around a stack of orbs climbing the spine through spiky golden blooms, with a gold-and-green spiral near the hem. Same Magus Fawn cloak build, unisex XS to 5XL. Black faux fur peeks out of the hood beautifully; white is the brighter option.
For camp, pack one more layer. Our hooded blankets with ears are $150: 100% poly fleece at 300 g/m², an oversized pullover with a cat-ear hood and a front quarter zip, one size cut as a 4XL. It's the piece you sleep in, wake up in and carry down to the river with your coffee.
Order-by dates for every Southwest festival
Every Magus Fawn piece is made to order: 7–11 business days of production, then 6–14 business days of delivery. The comfortable date leaves 30 business days before opening; the last call leaves 25. Both skip weekends, US federal holidays and the day after Thanksgiving, the method in our made-to-order timing guide.

Four states, one rule: pack for the night
Sun hat by day, hood by night, and a little art in between. From Tucson's fairgrounds to the Animas River to the Saltair in August, the Southwest rewards the festival-goer who packs for both halves of the day.
