A bicycle bell rings twice, and a woman in a silver bodysuit glides past on a cruiser, pink parasol in one hand, plastic flowers zip-tied to her handlebars, goggles riding on her forehead like a crown.
Behind her, a dust devil spins across the cracked white floor of an ancient lake, and an entire camp of strangers cheers it on like a headliner.
That's the playa in one frame, and it's the whole brief for burning man outfits for women. What you wear has to keep you cool on a lakebed that runs past 100°F, turn into shelter when the dust rises, tell the city who you are, and wrap you up when the desert drops fifty degrees after dark.
We're Magus and Lylyth Fawn, Los Angeles visionary artists whose whole life orbits transformational festivals. This is the women's playbook for Burning Man 2027, look by look, with burner fashion built from pieces you'll keep wearing long after the alkali washes out.
What do women wear to Burning Man?
Women at Burning Man dress for four moments a day: a breathable bodysuit or light dress with a wide-brim hat for the heat, a hood, scarf and goggles for dust storms, a costume for the city's spirit of self-expression, and a faux-fur-lined cloak over leggings for the deep night. Magus Fawn designs its burner fashion around that rhythm.
| Moment | What the playa brings | The women's formula |
|---|---|---|
| Playa day | 90–100°F, dry air, glare at nearly 4,000 feet | Light-toned bodysuit, wide-brim hat, parasol, sunscreen |
| The bike ride | Wind and long miles between camps | A short dress over bike shorts, goggles on |
| Dust storm | Instant whiteouts, any hour | Hood up, scarf over braided hair, goggles down |
| Costume hour | A whole city dressed as its dreams | One character, built around one printed piece |
| Deep night | 45–55°F, sometimes the 40s | Faux-fur-lined cloak, leggings or joggers, boots, lights |
Black Rock City has no vending, so every look rides in with you. Packing for two? Our men's playbook, Burning Man Outfits for Men 2027, covers his side of the tent.
How do you stay cool at Burning Man?
To stay cool at Burning Man, wear light, breathable pieces in pale or silvery tones, a wide-brim hat with a chinstrap and sunglasses, reapply sunscreen and rest in shade through the hottest hours. The official Survival Guide says daytime temperatures "routinely exceed 100°F, with extremely low humidity." Magus Fawn's playa-day pick is a stretch bodysuit.
The dry air plays a quiet trick. As the Survival Guide puts it, "you may not feel particularly warm, but you'll be steadily drying up." Keep a water bottle on you like a phone. It also warns that "At nearly 4,000 feet above sea level, your skin will burn much faster and more severely than at lower elevations," so sunscreen goes on every inch a bodysuit leaves open, including your back.
Its packing list includes "Shade structures, umbrellas, parasols" and "A wide brim hat (a chinstrap is useful in the wind)." On the playa, a parasol counts as both shade and costume.

Our pick wears the playa's own palette. The Angel Catcher Light Grey V-neck bodysuit ($55) is silver-grey and white mandala filigree, two medallions at the chest and a fine black six-pointed star at the waist, a net drawn to catch whatever angels drift over the desert. It's stretch microfiber (95% poly, 5% spandex) at a listed 180 g/m², with a plunging V-neck, an open back and a snap closure, in XS–2XL. Add a sarong for the walk to Center Camp.
Bike looks: a lace dress on the open playa
Black Rock City is big, and you'll cross it on two wheels. The Survival Guide asks for "A working bicycle (mountain bikes or cruisers with balloon tires are best)," and every veteran knows the most photogenic way to ride one: a short dress over bike shorts, hem fluttering, nothing long enough to meet the chain.

The Alien Cyber Punk Mech women's lace cami dress ($65) is our ride-to-the-sound-camp dress: a symmetrical biomechanical print in cobalt, violet, teal and magenta with a white geometric emblem at the chest, a black lace bodice, spaghetti straps and crisscross straps over an open back. The fabric is 180 g/m² stretch jersey (95% poly, 5% spandex), in sizes S–4XL. Under art-car lights on the Esplanade, the cobalt glows.

How do you protect your hair from playa dust?
Protect your hair from playa dust by braiding it, wrapping it in a scarf or buff, and pulling up a hood the moment the horizon softens. The playa is fine alkali silt that settles into every strand, so a little leave-in conditioner before you head out helps too. Magus Fawn's hooded tanks keep a hood within reach in full heat.
The Survival Guide is poetic about it: "Dust storms prowl the playa and can produce instant whiteouts." When one finds you in the open, its advice is simple: "sit down, turn your back to the wind, cover your face, and wait it out."
- Braids, buns or a low twist. Loose waves look gorgeous for exactly one gust.
- A silk or satin scarf under the hood. It keeps the dust on the scarf.
- Goggles on your forehead from breakfast on, ready to pull down.

A sleeveless hoodie is the dust-storm hero: arms free in the heat, a hood up in one motion. The Dream Weaver cotton sleeveless hooded tank ($80) weaves an icy blue, periwinkle and violet dreamscape around a wolf's face, with stepped pyramids near the shoulders and violet-winged birds circling both sides, all framed by a cream hood lining. It's 100% cotton at a listed 310 g/m², with a drawstring hood and a kangaroo pocket for goggles, in XS–5XL. (Dream Weaver's beach trance story: The Sand Loom.)

What does radical self-expression mean at Burning Man?
Radical self-expression is one of Burning Man's Ten Principles, written by co-founder Larry Harvey in 2004. It says self-expression "arises from the unique gifts of the individual," and nobody else decides what it looks like. For your wardrobe, that makes plain cotton and a full character costume equally at home on the playa.
The Ten Principles frame that expression as a gift to everyone who sees it. The best Burning Man costumes for women follow suit: pick a character you'd love to be for twelve hours, build it around one printed piece, and let the city play along.

The Atlantean. The playa is "a dry remnant of Pleistocene Lake Lahontan," according to Wikipedia's Black Rock Desert entry, and at its highest the lakebed sat under about 500 feet of water. So come as royalty from the city that lake remembers. The Egyptian Atlantis tube top bodysuit ($75) sets gold winged emblems, hieroglyph-style birds and a tree-of-life medallion on deep navy, with a curved tube top, clear shoulder straps and black straps laced across open sides. It's 88% poly / 12% spandex at a listed 220 g/m², XS–2XL. Add a gold collar, a sheer blue scarf and that parasol.

The lost astronaut. Start with the Cosmic Cross Silver one-shoulder crop top ($40): silver-grey, charcoal and lavender filigree laced with Flower of Life linework and tiny starbursts, like the hull of a ship that came a very long way. It's 180 g/m² stretch microfiber (95% poly, 5% spandex), XS–2XL. Add silver shorts, white boots, an LED-trimmed visor and a clipboard for asking strangers which planet this is.
The art-car figurehead. A short dress, a crown of battery fairy lights, and a cloak held wide like wings on the top deck of a mutant vehicle.
One costume rule comes straight from Leave No Trace: loose feathers, glitter and sequins on tired thread all become MOOP. Whole garments keep the playa as clean as you found it. Bring an extra scarf to give away, too; our guide to gifts for burners covers the gift economy, and every look here travels to a regional burn just as well.
Deep-night looks: the women's cloak hour
Then the playa stages its favorite second act. The Survival Guide says temperatures "can quickly plummet 50 degrees," and "Overnight lows can be in the 40s." The full night-temperature story, plus how to light yourself up, lives in How Cold Does Burning Man Get at Night?. The short version: "Light yourself, your bike, your art, and your belongings."
The legs. Fishnets are for the photo; leggings or fleece joggers are for the ride home. Pull them on with warm socks and boots while you still feel the day's warmth.

The cloak. A lakebed has no trees, so bring the forest. Shroom Flower of Life is our love letter to the mycorrhizal networks that link a forest underground (its story: Lost on Purpose), and the Purple Shroom Flower of Life women's festival cloak ($250) cascades violet and magenta mushroom caps and fanned gills down to a spiral medallion at the hem. Every Magus Fawn cloak shares one build: a micro-mink outer, a microfiber fleece lining in black or white faux fur, a listed fabric weight of 200 g/m², a double front zipper and four pockets, two of them interior stash pockets, one zippered. Unisex fit, XS–5XL. Bodysuits have no pockets; the cloak carries your lip balm, light and goggles. Kevin, on a Lunar Eclipse cloak in March 2025: "Super soft and warm."

The second cloak. Want something darker for the ride out to the deep playa? The Golden Phoenix women's black cloak ($250) scrolls gold filigree and paisley across black, then lets violet, blue and teal feathers sweep down both front edges and along the sleeves, folded wings while you walk and open ones when you raise your arms. Its photo looks like a playa evening already: hood up, white faux fur showing at every edge, a towering sunburst sculpture glowing in the haze behind. Same build and four pockets as the Shroom Flower of Life, XS–5XL.
On Saturday the city rings the Man and watches it burn; on Sunday the Temple burns in silence. For one first-timer's cloak, from a whiteout all the way to the Temple, read The Laminated Burner.

Frequently asked questions
Can you wear a dress on a bike at Burning Man?
Yes, and plenty of burners do. Choose a dress that ends above the knee or tie a longer skirt up so the hem stays clear of the chain, and wear bike shorts underneath for the wind. The official Survival Guide recommends mountain bikes or cruisers with balloon tires, plus lights on your bike and yourself at night.
What colors should you wear at Burning Man?
Wear whatever colors make you feel most like yourself, then plan for the dust. The playa is pale alkali silt, so silver, grey, white and pastels let it settle in quietly, while saturated prints in magenta or cobalt glow under art-car lights. After dark, the lights you wear matter more than any color.
Can you wear a bodysuit to Burning Man?
Yes. A stretch bodysuit is one of the coolest things you can wear on a 100°F playa day, and it doubles as a costume base. Cover exposed skin with sunscreen, since the playa sits near 4,000 feet, tie on a sarong or shorts for bike rides, and add warm layers and a cloak at night.
