You will need it. Music festivals in California pack three climates into one road trip: dust devils over a lakeshore, salt air drifting across a harbor stage, river mist curling through redwoods, and event halls in San Bernardino where breath turns to vapor between sets.

What are the best music festivals in California in 2027?

For 2027, start with Lightning in a Bottle at Buena Vista Lake (May 26–30), Dirtybird Campout x Northern Nights in the redwoods (July 15–18) and Beyond Wonderland SoCal (March 26–27). Add Coachella, CRSSD, Day Trip and HARD Summer once dates land, plus Countdown NYE and Dreamstate this winter.

Ten California weekends worth the miles

The soonest gates come first; the rest follow the calendar into next fall.

1. Dreamstate SoCal: trance flags beside the Queen Mary

Dreamstate gathers the trance family at the Queen Mary Waterfront in Long Beach on November 20–21, 2026, with flags, anthems and damp harbor nights of 50–55°F. 2027 dates are TBA.

2. Countdown NYE: an outer-space New Year in San Bernardino

Countdown NYE returns to the NOS Events Center for two days, December 31, 2026 and January 1, 2027, with an outer-space theme, five covered stages and 40–45°F between the halls.

Outfit note: a cloak that reads like a star chart. CRSSD brings house and techno to Waterfront Park twice a year, in mid-March and late September (fall 2026 ran September 26–27). It's 21+, the marine air keeps nights at 55–62°F, and 2027 dates are TBA.

4. Beyond Wonderland SoCal: down the rabbit hole at NOS

Beyond Wonderland fills the NOS Events Center with its Alice in Wonderland world on March 26–27, 2027. Nights settle at 45–50°F.

Outfit note: something the Red Queen would approve. 5. Coachella: two April weekends on the polo fields

Coachella fills the Empire Polo Club in Indio across two April weekends (2026 ran April 10–12 and 17–19). The 2027 advance sale has already come and gone, and festival dates are TBA.

Outfit note: shade you can dance in. The Do LaB's transformational festival returns to Buena Vista Lake near Bakersfield on May 26–30, 2027. Expect the Woogie and Lightning stages, workshops at the Temple of Consciousness, afternoon dust and a big swing from 85–95°F days to nights in the 50s°F.

Outfit note: something airy for the heat. Dirtybird's summer-camp games meet Northern Nights' bass at Cook's Valley Campground on July 15–18, 2027, beside the river on the Humboldt and Mendocino line. Days run 85–95°F, nights drop into the 50s°F, and the giant redwoods frame the stages.

Outfit note: river by day, hoodie by night. 10. Escape Halloween: costumes at NOS

Escape is SoCal's Halloween rave at the NOS Events Center; the 2026 edition ran October 30–31 under a "Psycho Circus" banner. Nights sit at 50–55°F, costumes are the point, and 2027 dates are TBA.

California festivals that have ended or paused

Desert Hearts began in California, running its "one stage, one vibe" house and techno marathon on the Los Coyotes Reservation from 2014 to 2019 before moving to a ponderosa meadow near Flagstaff, Arizona, for 2024 and 2025. The crew paused the festival for 2026 and threw a smaller Microfest in California's Tuolumne County on October 1–5, 2026. No 2027 dates or location have been announced. Symbiosis has ended. The transformational gathering moved between Northern California sites before settling at Woodward Reservoir in Oakdale from 2013 to 2016, where mermaid performers swam in the reservoir and the 2016 "Family Tree" edition drew about 20,000 people. When is music festival season in California?

California runs festivals all year, with a spring rush and a winter glow. March brings CRSSD and Beyond Wonderland, April belongs to Coachella and late May to Lightning in a Bottle. Summer adds Day Trip, Northern Nights and HARD Summer, then fall and winter bring Escape, Dreamstate and Countdown NYE.

What should you wear to a California music festival?

Harbor events want velvet plus a light hooded layer for the marine air. Winter nights at the NOS Events Center call for a faux-fur-lined cloak.
