Music Festivals in New Mexico 2027: Albuquerque Stages, a Santa Fe Burn and Concerts Above 8,000 Feet

|Magus Fawn

The lowest town in this guide is Albuquerque, at 5,312 feet. From there New Mexico's festival map climbs: Silver City sits at 5,919 feet, Santa Fe just under 7,000, and Angel Fire, in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, at 8,882.

That climb decides what you pack more than the month does. On an August night, Albuquerque's airport averages 64.9°F; the Angel Fire station, 3,190 feet up, averages 42.1°F on the same nights.

Below: seven New Mexico festivals for 2027, in order of elevation, with what to wear. Four have posted exact 2027 dates, SunBurn has named its weekend, and two still show 2026.

Seven New Mexico festivals, sorted by elevation

Town elevations are USGS figures, via Wikipedia. Silver City borrows the Albuquerque airport station, about 183 miles northeast, so its low is a ballpark. For a wider sweep, our four-state Southwest guide adds Nevada and Utah, and Gem & Jam and Saguaro Man are across the line in our Arizona festival guide.

About 5,300 feet: Albuquerque's mariachi week and folk day

Mariachi Spectacular de Albuquerque: classes, a showcase and a concert (July 7–10)

Mariachi Spectacular de Albuquerque returns July 7–10, 2027. It starts as a conference, with beginning, intermediate and advanced classes taught by mariachi maestros. On Friday, July 9, students from those classes compete in the Showcase, seven minutes per group, for the opening slot at the Mariachi Spectacular Concert the following evening.

Outfit note: Albuquerque's July nights average 66.5°F, the mildest on this list. A tee and a sun hat cover the afternoon classes.

Albuquerque Folk Festival: a day of jams and dance workshops (September 25)

The Albuquerque Folk Festival fills the National Hispanic Cultural Center on Saturday, September 25, 2027. The 2026 edition ran from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. with dance workshops, two jamming venues, an Instrument Petting Zoo and giant puppets, and anyone under 18 got in free with an adult.

Outfit note: every venue is indoors or tented, with sunny walks between. Leggings by day; September nights average 58.1°F, so bring a cloak for after dark.

In October the balloons arrive; our story Land Here follows a house DJ who leaves his all-night set to crew a balloon at dawn.

Near 5,900 feet: blues in a Silver City park

Silver City Blues Festival: two free days in Gough Park (2027 dates TBA)

The Mimbres Region Arts Council held the 31st Silver City Blues Festival on May 23–24, 2026, in Gough Park, free to attend with donations welcome. The 2026 FAQ asked guests to bring their own chairs and left tents and canopies out to protect the park's sprinklers.

Outfit note: canopies and umbrellas stay out, so wear your shade: a wide-brimmed hat by day, something warmer for the evening set.

Elevation to be announced: SunBurn's new land

SunBurn: New Mexico's regional burn moves to Memorial Day (dates TBA)

SunBurn, New Mexico's officially sanctioned Burning Man regional, is moving from Fourth of July weekend to Memorial Day weekend in 2027. Its board points to summer heat, a safety concern raised for years in participant surveys, and says the team is also looking for new land. Dates and location will follow.

Outfit note: until the land is named, plan for both ends of the range. Albuquerque averages 52.4°F on May nights, Angel Fire 31.9°F. For a Memorial Day weekend farther afield, see our national 2027 shortlist.

Around 7,000 feet: Santa Fe's burn and a trail-side camp

Burning of Zozobra: Old Man Gloom's 103rd burn (September 3)

The Kiwanis Club of Santa Fe burns Zozobra for the 103rd time on Friday, September 3, 2027, at Fort Marcy Park, with "Zozobra the Kid" riding in and tickets on sale April 13, 2027. Artist Will Shuster burned the first figure in 1924. The Burning of Zozobra is Santa Fe's night of letting go, with live music and dance before the 50-foot marionette burns with the year's glooms inside.

Outfit note: Santa Fe sits about 60 miles from each station, so expect a burn night between 58.1°F and 36.1°F. Cloak on, hood ready.

Santa Fe TradFest: three days on the old Santa Fe Trail (2027 dates TBA)

Santa Fe TradFest celebrated its 10th anniversary on August 28–30, 2026, at Bishop's Ridge Camp & Retreat Center, in the Sangre de Cristo foothills along the Old Santa Fe Trail. Its 2026 program mixed old-time, mariachi, Irish, Native American and Northern New Mexico music with open jams and a barn dance.

Outfit note: a camp in the foothills in late August. Joggers for the jam circles, and the hooded blanket once the tent zips shut.

Above 8,000 feet: concerts around Angel Fire

Music from Angel Fire: chamber music in four mountain towns (August 19–September 1)

Music from Angel Fire has brought chamber music to northern New Mexico since 1983. Its 2026 season, "America 250: Echoes of Liberty," ran August 13–26 with concerts in Angel Fire, Taos, Raton and Eagle Nest. Its 2027 season runs August 19 to September 1.

Outfit note: the Angel Fire station averages 42.1°F on August nights and reaches 40°F or colder on about 11 of them. Wear the cloak to your seat and keep it on through the encore.

What 3,190 feet does to a New Mexico night

It takes roughly 20 to 23 degrees off. In the four festival months on this list, the Angel Fire station's average lows run 20.5 to 22.8°F under Albuquerque's, while its afternoons stay pleasant, from the mid-60s to the upper 70s. Even July nights there average 43.7°F, and about 18 May nights reach freezing.

Month Albuquerque (5,310 ft) day / night Angel Fire (8,500 ft) day / night
May 79.9°F / 52.4°F 64.0°F / 31.9°F
July 91.2°F / 66.5°F 76.7°F / 43.7°F
August 88.8°F / 64.9°F 74.7°F / 42.1°F
September 82.5°F / 58.1°F 68.8°F / 36.1°F

All figures are 1991–2020 averages from NOAA NCEI for Albuquerque International Airport (USW00023050) and Angel Fire 1S (USC00290407).

Cloaks and layers for the climb from 5,300 to 8,900 feet

Woman with thin multicolored braids, rose-tinted aviators, black fishnet tights and metallic pink boots, zipped into the Hearts Roses women's festival cloak: a crimson heart across the chest above a red rose, with magenta, plum and lilac swirls

Adobe pink with chile-red roses. The Hearts Roses women's festival cloak ($250) marbles rose pink, magenta and plum with streaks of white, scattering crimson roses and small hearts from hood to hem. Zipped, a crimson heart spans the chest above a single red rose. Worn open, as in our featured image, it's our pick for Zozobra.

Man in aviators, hood up, wearing the Angel Catcher Light Teal men's festival cloak open over a black tee: turquoise and aqua starbursts traced in navy, white and coral lines, white faux-fur lining

Turquoise for the mountains. The Angel Catcher Light Teal men's festival cloak ($250) covers sleeves and front in turquoise and aqua starbursts, their rays drawn in navy and white with coral centers, and opens on a bright white faux-fur lining. It's the color New Mexico sets in silver, and our Angel Fire pick.

Both cloaks run unisex, XS to 5XL. Outside, two deep pockets sit at the hips; inside, a zippered pocket for car keys rides beside an open one. The front zipper runs from either end, the hood tightens on heavy cords, and the shell is micro-mink (200 g/m²) over the faux-fur lining color you pick, white or black.

A man facing away from the camera in a charcoal long-sleeve tee and white sneakers wearing the Liquid Fire men's joggers: scarlet, orange, gold, lime, violet and cobalt marbling veined in black

Chile red on the legs. The Liquid Fire men's joggers ($100) pour scarlet, orange and gold down both legs, with violet, cobalt and lime curling through and black veins between, like a ristra drying in the sun. The face is a soft recycled knit, brushed vegan fleece sits against the skin, and the legs finish in cuffs, with pockets and a drawstring at the waist. Slim through the leg, XS–3XL; go up a size if thermals go underneath at TradFest.

Woman with long braids threaded in teal and gold, round orange-tinted sunglasses and a blue crop top, wearing the Solar Eclipse yoga leggings: an eclipsed sun with a gold and orange corona at the hip, teal spirals, grey line web on charcoal

An eclipse at the hip. The Solar Eclipse yoga leggings ($70) set a black sun inside a gold-and-orange corona on one hip, with teal spirals and copper lines trailing down the leg over a fine grey web. The knit gives in all four directions and the waistband sits above the hips; XS–XL, for a folk-festival dance workshop.

Woman with wavy blonde hair, mirrored aviators, gold hoops and woven bracelets in the Alien Dimension women's crushed velvet crop hoodie: violet, cobalt and turquoise alien faces, magenta swirls, a line-drawn gold star at the chest

Turquoise through the violet. The Alien Dimension women's crushed velvet crop hoodie ($75) crowds violet and cobalt velvet with turquoise-eyed alien faces and curls of magenta around a fine-lined gold star at the chest. It ends above the navel, so it slips easily under a cloak; drawstring hood, sleeves to the wrist, S to 2XL. Our layer for Zozobra night.

Woman with red face gems and braids wrapped in turquoise and red thread in the Crimson Fenrir Wolf snapback: a glowing-eyed black wolf amid crimson swirls, grey Flower of Life geometry beneath the brim

Chile red up top. On the Crimson Fenrir Wolf snapback ($40), crimson swirls wrap a black wolf whose eyes glow orange, and the flat brim's underside carries Flower of Life geometry in grey. Sized by the strap at the back: wear it to the Spectacular's afternoon classes.

Sleeping warm at TradFest and SunBurn

At TradFest and SunBurn, someone always stays up outside the tent; our hooded blankets ($150) are for whoever draws that shift. Each slips over your head in one generous size (4XL); its fleece, all polyester, comes in at 300 g/m², and the hood wears two cat ears. A collar zip and a front pocket roomy enough for a headlamp finish it.

Sewn in time for the Spectacular, Angel Fire and Fort Marcy

Our made-to-order timing guide explains the arithmetic. Making a piece takes 7 to 11 business days and shipping another 6 to 14, so we plan on the long end: 25 working days back from each opening's eve (its last weekday), plus five as a cushion. No weekend day or federal holiday is counted.

  • Mariachi Spectacular (Wednesday, July 7): with the cushion, Thursday, May 20, 2027; at the latest, Thursday, May 27 (three holidays skipped).
  • Music from Angel Fire (Thursday, August 19): with the cushion, Wednesday, July 7; at the latest, Wednesday, July 14.
  • Burning of Zozobra (Friday, September 3): with the cushion, Thursday, July 22; at the latest, Thursday, July 29.

Layers change the fit. Our FAQ recommends going bigger when a cloak or hoodie goes over other clothes, sometimes by two sizes. Sizes can't be returned, so email art@magusfawn.com first, measurements and all, and we'll reply with a recommendation. US delivery is free once your cart reaches $70.

Sending a gloom to Fort Marcy

Old Man Gloom is filled with notes from the public, each naming something its writer is ready to let go. Send yours online for $1, drop it in a gloom box around Santa Fe, or carry it to the Hutton Gloom Tent at Fort Marcy Park until 8:00 p.m. on burn night.

Frequently asked questions

What is Old Man Gloom made of?

Wood, wire, poultry netting, cotton cloth, nails, screws, pulleys, plywood, spray paint, pizza pans and duct tape, according to the Zozobra FAQ, all stuffed with shredded paper that includes the public's glooms. He stands 50 feet 6 inches and weighs about 3,000 pounds at showtime. The 103rd burn is September 3, 2027, at Fort Marcy Park.

What moved SunBurn to Memorial Day weekend?

Heat. SunBurn ran around the Fourth of July for years, and its board says extreme heat had become one of the event's biggest safety challenges, a concern participants raised in surveys. Moving to Memorial Day weekend in 2027 should bring milder weather. The organizers are also looking for new land and will share dates later.

What does an instrument get you at the Albuquerque Folk Festival?

A discount and a place to jam. The 2026 FAQ gave players $5 off the gate price and a free instrument check room until 8 p.m., with two jamming venues on the grounds. The 2027 festival runs Saturday, September 25, at the National Hispanic Cultural Center in Albuquerque.

Who competes in the Mariachi Spectacular Showcase?

Musicians who attended the three-day Mariachi Spectacular conference, in groups from elementary pupils through college players plus an open class. Each group gets seven minutes, and no piece may be repeated once played. The 2027 Showcase is Friday, July 9, and the groups compete for the opening slot at the Mariachi Spectacular Concert the next evening.
