There's a dancer at every festival who never seems to stop.
You spot them early, at the edge of the opening set, and you spot them again hours later, still moving. Wide mandala-print pants swing around their ankles like temple bells. A hood goes up when the lights turn bright and comes down when the breeze arrives. Earplugs come out of one pocket, lip balm out of another, and the phone rides somewhere it stays put. They never tug at a waistband or stop to fix a strap.
Comfortable rave outfits work by disappearing. Once the music starts, the only things you should feel are the bass in your chest and the ground under your feet. The art still turns heads. The fabric simply gets out of the way.
We're Magus and Lylyth Fawn, Los Angeles visionary artists, and we design every print here ourselves. These are the pants, pockets and pieces we'd pack for a ten-hour day of dancing.
What are the most comfortable rave outfits?
The most comfortable rave outfits pair a soft, stretchy or loose bottom with a breathable top, plus at least one pocket. Think joggers with a cotton hooded tank, lantern pants with a velvet tank, or athletic shorts with a cropped tee. Elastic waistbands, cuffed ankles and four-way stretch let you dance for hours without adjusting anything.
Five formulas that move happily from the first set to the last:
| Outfit formula | Why it feels good | Pockets | Where it shines |
|---|---|---|---|
| Joggers + cotton hooded tank | Fleece-lined legs, breathable cotton up top, a hood for shade | Side pockets + kangaroo pocket | Cool nights, bass stages, the walk out |
| Lantern pants + velvet tank | Loose wide legs, bare arms, air everywhere | Add a chest bag | Psytrance, house, forest stages |
| Athletic long shorts + cropped tee | Four-way stretch, moisture-wicking, raglan sleeves | Mesh side pockets | Hot day stages |
| Cargo shorts + jersey sleeveless hoodie | Relaxed shorts, a light jersey hood | Multiple cargo pockets | Techno, dusty fields |
| Festival leggings + hooded tank | Skinny stretch with nothing to catch | Kangaroo pocket up top | Shuffling, hooping, flow arts |
Three things sit under every row. A forgiving waist: elastic plus a drawstring. Movement: either stretch (leggings, athletic shorts) or room (lantern pants, relaxed shorts). Air: sleeveless cuts and breathable fabrics up top. For shoes and socks, see our guide to raving in your 40s and beyond.
What are lantern pants?
Lantern pants are loose, wide-legged trousers gathered at the ankle, so each leg balloons out like a paper lantern. They usually have an elastic waistband and a drawstring, and all that volume lets air move while you dance. They're a psytrance and forest-festival favorite because they flow beautifully with every step.
They're close cousins of harem pants, and stores often use the two names loosely. Ours are cut in what the product page calls a carrot fit: roomy through the hip, then tapering to cuffed ankles that keep the hems clear of dust and puddles.

The Void Mandala men's lantern pants ($80, XS–4XL) layer silver and charcoal mandalas, Om symbols and Flower of Life medallions over black, so the detailed print reads almost tone on tone from afar. They're a soft poly waffle knit (95% poly, 5% spandex) at a listed 300 g/m², with an elastic waistband, an adjustable drawstring, wide legs and cuffed ankles. The page describes the fabric as cozy and warm, which makes them a lovely pick for evenings that cool off (read the story behind the design: Same Channel).
The product page lists no pockets, so let your top or a chest bag carry the essentials.
Joggers and leggings: two more rave outfits with pants

Joggers are the closest thing a rave has to pajamas you can wear in public. The Liquified Abyss joggers ($100; $105 in 2XL, $108 in 3XL) pour magenta, violet, navy, teal and tangerine together like ink swirling through dark water. They're 96% recycled poly and 4% elastane at a listed 308 g/m², with a cotton-feel face, brushed vegan fleece inside, cuffed legs, an elastic waistband with a drawstring and side pockets. The cut is slim in XS–3XL; order one or two sizes up for a looser fit (read the story behind the design: Meet Me at the Lake at 4 A.M.).
That fleece makes joggers the star of cool nights and the queue outside an indoor rave. Our guide to what guys actually wear to raves builds full jogger outfits by genre and temperature.

Leggings suit dancers who like nothing flapping: shufflers, hoopers, poi spinners. The Cosmic Cross Silver men's festival leggings ($65, XS–3XL) trace silver-white and lavender filigree down a black leg, fine as engraved silverwork. They're microfiber, 90% poly and 10% spandex, in a skinny fit the page says is built for "all range of movement." Pair them with a pocketed top, or slip a chest bag across your body.
Which rave outfits have pockets?
In the Magus Fawn line, joggers have side pockets, cargo shorts have multiple cargo pockets, athletic long shorts have mesh side pockets, cotton hooded tanks have a kangaroo pocket, and festival cloaks carry four. Lantern pants, leggings, tanks and crop tops go pocket-free, so pair them with a pocketed piece or a chest bag.
| Piece | Pockets (from the product page) | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| Joggers | Side pockets | Phone, card, lip balm |
| Cargo shorts | Multiple cargo pockets | Earplugs, sunscreen, snacks |
| Athletic long shorts | Mesh side pockets | Light items you reach for often |
| Cotton hooded tank | Front kangaroo pocket | Earplugs, a folded bandana |
| Festival cloak | 4: two interior stash pockets (one zippered), two deep side pockets | Everything, after dark |
| Lantern pants, leggings, tanks, crop tops | None listed | Pair with a pocketed piece |
Build your outfit so the pockets come from at least one piece. Our festival cloak buyer's guide walks through those four cloak pockets for cold nights. For a pocket-free outfit, a slim bag worn across the chest keeps your phone where you can feel it, and our guide to rave backpacks and chest bags covers sizes and carrying in a crowd.
Cargo shorts or athletic shorts: which is better for dancing?
Athletic shorts win for pure movement: four-way stretch, moisture-wicking fabric and an elastic waist move with every step. Cargo shorts win for storage and structure, with a button waistband and multiple cargo pockets. For a hot afternoon of nonstop dancing, choose athletic shorts; for a dusty day carrying your essentials, choose cargo shorts.

Cargo shorts are the utility belt of rave outfits. The Shroom Flower of Life Green men's cargo shorts ($65; $70 in 4XL–5XL) grow lime and leaf-green mushroom caps, spirals and fern-like fronds across the leg, warmed with crimson accents: a forest floor after rain. They're a breathable, denim-like 100% poly at 190 g/m², with a button-closure waistband and multiple cargo pockets, regular fit in S–5XL. (read the story behind it: Lost on Purpose).

Athletic long shorts are the ones you forget you're wearing. The Feathery Fractal Blue unisex athletic long shorts ($60; $65 in 2XL–4XL, $70 in 5XL–6XL) swirl teal, emerald and violet fractal feathers in a pattern that opens up the closer you look. The page lists four-way stretch, moisture-wicking and fast-drying microfiber (91% recycled poly, 9% spandex, 174 g/m²), UPF 50+, an elastic waistband with a drawstring, mesh side pockets and no inner lining, in a relaxed fit from 2XS to 6XL.
Tops that breathe: hooded tanks, a velvet tank and a cropped tee

The cotton hooded tank brings shade, a pocket and natural fiber in one piece. The Cosmic Knight cotton sleeveless hooded tank ($80) draws a winged, armored knight down your back in silver and pale gold on deep slate, surrounded by compass stars, celestial wheels and star-chart glyphs, with a cream-lined hood. It's 100% cotton at a listed 310 g/m², with a front kangaroo pocket and drawstring, sized XS–5XL on the size menu. Cotton can settle 3–5% after the first wash, so wash cold and air dry.

The jersey sleeveless hoodie keeps the hood and drops the weight. The Cyber Punk Mech men's sleeveless pullover hoodie ($75) mirrors cobalt, violet and teal mech plating around crisp white geometric linework at the chest, with flashes of gold: a circuit board dreaming in color. It's 180 g/m² jersey (95% poly, 5% spandex), regular fit in S–2XL. Our men's festival shirts guide compares cotton and jersey hooded tanks side by side.

The velvet tank turns lasers into glitter. The Mechanical Kraken crushed velvet tank top ($60) sends a biomechanical kraken's tentacles curling down your back in silver, violet and teal, so the crowd behind you gets the show. It's a unisex crew-neck tank in 240 g/m² crushed velvet (95% poly, 5% spandex), regular fit in S–5XL (read its cruise story: The Lights Under the Wake).

The cropped tee keeps sleeves without the heat. The Egyptian Atlantis cropped T-shirt ($40) gilds a tree of life, seated jackals, golden birds and obelisk towers across deep navy. It's 180 g/m² microfiber (95% poly, 5% spandex) with raglan sleeves, a cut that "provides mobility and flexibility in the arm and shoulder," regular fit in XS–2XL. More pairings live in our rave tops guide.
How should rave pants fit for dancing?
Rave pants should let you squat, kick and spin without pulling at the waist or knees. Choose stretch or choose room: skinny leggings work because they stretch, and lantern pants work because they're loose. Joggers sit in between; ours are cut slim, so order one or two sizes up for a relaxed, baggy look.
Before the festival, try a deep squat, a high knee and a full spin at home. If nothing pulls, you're ready.
Measure, then order. Every piece is made to order: production takes 7–11 business days, then delivery takes 6–14 business days. All sales are final, so if you're between sizes, email your measurements to art@magusfawn.com and we'll help you choose. US shipping is free at $70+. For full looks in extended sizes, see our plus size rave outfits guide.
Ten hours from now you'll still be dancing, and you won't have thought about your waistband once.

Frequently asked questions
Is four-way stretch fabric good for dancing?
Yes. Four-way stretch fabric stretches both lengthwise and crosswise, then springs back, so it moves with deep squats, high kicks and spins. Spandex, also called elastane, supplies that stretch. Magus Fawn's athletic long shorts blend 91% recycled poly with 9% spandex, and our women's yoga leggings contain 25% elastane.
What does moisture-wicking fabric mean?
Moisture-wicking fabric pulls sweat off your skin and spreads it through the fibers by capillary action, so it reaches the outer surface and evaporates faster. You stay drier and less clammy on a hot dance floor. Magus Fawn's athletic long shorts are listed as moisture-wicking, breathable and fast-drying, with mesh side pockets.
What is a raglan sleeve?
A raglan sleeve runs in one piece all the way to the collar, with a diagonal seam from the underarm toward the neckline instead of a seam on top of the shoulder. That gives your arms and shoulders extra freedom, which is why the cut is popular in sportswear and on our cropped tees.
