It's 4:50 a.m., and the sky behind the decks is turning the color of a ripe plum.
The kick drum hasn't let up since midnight. Your calves have opinions, and your knees filed a formal objection around one o'clock. You overruled them. Now you're three rows back from the speakers, earplugs in, hood up, hands deep in warm pockets, and a twenty-two-year-old in a glitter cape leans over to shout the best question of the night: "Wait, where did you get that cloak?"
That's the part nobody mentions when people ask what to wear to a rave in your 40s. The answer was never "something age-appropriate." It's whatever lets you stay: one piece of art you love, shoes that still feel kind at sunrise, protected ears, a layer for the 4 a.m. chill, and enough left in the tank to watch the sun come up.
We're Magus and Lylyth Fawn, two Los Angeles visionary artists whose whole lives orbit festivals and the EDM world. Here's how festival lifers in their 40s, 50s and beyond dress for the long night.
What should you wear to a rave in your 40s?

Wear what you'd wear at any age, tuned for a long night: one art piece you love, breathable layers, supportive shoes you've already broken in, and earplugs. At Magus Fawn, our formula is a statement piece, a comfortable base, a warm hooded layer for 4 a.m., and pockets for everything that matters.
The dance floor is older than the stereotype. Burning Man's Black Rock City Census put the median age of the city at 36 in 2023, which means roughly half the people out there on the playa were older than that. What changes with experience isn't the rules. It's the priorities: a veteran dresses for hour six, not minute one.
The one-great-piece rule. If you own a tutu and the will, wear the tutu. The most reliable look on any floor, though, is one piece of real art carried by comfortable basics. Here's how that formula flexes by event:
| Where you're dancing | The art piece | The comfort base | The 4 a.m. layer |
|---|---|---|---|
| Warehouse or club rave | A crushed velvet polo or hoodie | Dark joggers and cushioned sneakers | A hoodie you can tie at your waist |
| Outdoor day festival | A chiffon kimono or a printed hat | Leggings or soft pants and trail runners | A cotton hoodie in your bag |
| Desert or camping festival | A festival cloak | Joggers over leggings and broken-in boots | The cloak, zipped to the chin |
| Ecstatic dance | A loose kimono | Soft cotton, barefoot where the event allows | A cotton hoodie for the cool-down |
For techno floors where black is the unofficial uniform, crushed velvet adds shine without shouting. Cosmic Cross Silver is our cathedral-ironwork design, ornate silver filigree on black, like a wrought-iron gate to a club that opens after midnight. The Cosmic Cross Silver crushed velvet polo shirt ($65) comes in sizes S–5XL, for anyone who'd like to look as if they own the record label.

What to wear to a music festival over 40?

For a music festival over 40, dress for a long, bright day and a cool night: a light cover-up and a hat for the sun, leggings or soft pants you can walk miles in, and a warm layer stashed for after dark. Magus Fawn's pick is a chiffon kimono by day and a hooded layer from sunset.
A festival keeps you outdoors for twelve hours, and the temperature swings hard. At Burning Man, days run 90–100°F and nights drop to 45–55°F, sometimes into the 40s, so think in layers you can add and shed.
The sun is the first act. The American Academy of Dermatology's sunscreen guidance calls for broad-spectrum, water-resistant SPF 30 or higher, reapplied about every two hours, plus a wide-brimmed hat and light long sleeves. Our pieces bring the color; your sunscreen brings the science.
For the afternoon stage: the Acid Melt chiffon kimono ($75) drapes over a tank or tee and comes in sizes S–5XL. Acid Melt is a rainbow of symmetrical fractal flames in orange, red, lime, cobalt and violet, melting downward, the print that lets friends find you across a field of ten thousand.

For your head: the Sacred Geo bucket hat ($50), in sizes XS–XL, sets sacred geometry line work, stars inside circles, in pastel lavender and pink. It's an ancient pattern language, and it looks right on a head that has seen a few sunrises.
How do you stay comfortable at a rave all night?

Start at your feet: broken-in, cushioned shoes with room for your toes, because feet swell over a long day. Then choose soft waistbands, stretch fabrics and real pockets, so nothing pinches or rides up. At Magus Fawn, we build comfort into the base layer, so the art can do all the talking.
Shoes first, always. The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons' OrthoInfo shoe-fit guide notes that feet can grow as we age and suggests getting them measured every year. It also recommends shopping toward the end of the day, when feet are at their largest, and leaving half an inch between your longest toe and the tip of the shoe. Translation: buy the pair a month early, after a long day, and dance them in around the kitchen.
The rest of the comfort kit:
- Fresh socks at midnight. A ten-second change that feels like a spa treatment.
- A waistband that forgives. Elastic plus a drawstring beats a belt by about 3 a.m.
- Pockets with a plan. Phone and ID zipped away, earplugs and lip balm in easy reach, and reading glasses for the set-times app, because tiny print on a festival map is a design choice, not a vision test.
For the legs: the Forest Wizard Teal joggers ($100; $105 in 2XL, $108 in 3XL) have an elastic waist with a drawstring, cuffed legs and side pockets, with brushed vegan fleece inside. Forest Wizard is our gothic botanical design, leaves and vines grown into ornament, here in teal and emerald: a garden for anyone who knows the best things take a few seasons to bloom.

For a second skin: the Solar Eclipse women's yoga leggings ($70) are microfiber with four-way stretch and a raised waistband that stays put through every drop, in sizes XS–XL. Solar Eclipse sets a golden eclipsed sun and spiral orbits on black, touched with teal and violet. Wear them alone in the afternoon and under joggers after dark.
How do you protect your hearing at a rave?
Wear earplugs from the first track, give the speaker stacks some distance, and step into quieter spaces between sets. The NIDCD calls noise-induced hearing loss the only type of hearing loss that is completely preventable, which makes earplugs the most valuable accessory in any Magus Fawn outfit, at any age.
Here's the encouraging part. The National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders says about one in three Americans aged 65 to 74 has age-related hearing loss, with long-term noise exposure among the factors. That kind can't yet be prevented; the noise-induced kind can. The ears you look after at 45 are the ears that hear the sunrise set at 75.
The NIDCD's noise-induced hearing loss guidance keeps it simple: wear earplugs or other protective devices during loud activities, and if you can't turn the noise down, move away from it. Venues are catching up: the World Health Organization's 2022 safe-listening standard recommends a maximum average sound level of 100 decibels, quiet zones and hearing protection for audiences, as UN News reported.
- Earplugs in before the opener, with a spare pair in a zippered pocket. Many ravers prefer high-fidelity earplugs made for music.
- Dance a little behind the front stacks, where the mix comes together and you can still talk to your crew.
- Use the quiet zone. Ten minutes in the chill space resets your ears and your legs.

How do you stay warm at a rave without overheating?

Layer so you can adjust in seconds: a breathable base for the dance floor, a hoodie you can tie around your waist, and a zip-up hooded outer layer for the walk back to camp. Magus Fawn's festival cloaks open down the front with a double zipper, so you can vent heat mid-set and seal it in at 4 a.m.
The dance floor is a furnace. The walk back is the plot twist. Countdown NYE nights in San Bernardino sit around 40–45°F, so veterans keep the warm layer on their body, not back at camp, and open it like a curtain when the drop hits.
The outer layer: Mystical Egypt maps the climb of the seven chakras, glowing circles from red to violet rising toward a pharaoh's face, amid gold and violet glyph-mandalas on dark violet. The Mystical Egypt men's festival cloak ($250) has a micro-mink outer and an ultra-soft fluffy microfiber fleece lining in black or white faux fur, plus heavy drawstrings and four pockets: two deep side pockets and two interior stash pockets, one zippered. It's a unisex fit in XS–5XL.
George, writing about a Madriax cloak in May 2023, put it best: "So comfortable you almost forgot how cool it looks!" For a hoodie underneath, our FAQ suggests sizing up, "sometimes even 2 sizes up."

The middle layer: the Angel Catcher cotton pullover hoodie ($100) is 100% cotton at a listed 310 g/m², dye-sublimated edge to edge through our cut-and-sew partners' new cotton process. It has a kangaroo pocket, a drawstring hood and a relaxed regular fit, in sizes XS–6XL. Angel Catcher is our sacred-geometry flower, in more colorways than anything else we make. Cotton shrinks 3–5% after the first wash, so size up if you're between sizes.
How do you stay out till sunrise at a rave?
Bank energy before the night starts: a short afternoon nap, a real dinner and water through the evening. Then pace the night in waves (dance hard, rest somewhere quiet, refuel, go again) and keep a warm layer close for the coldest hour. Magus Fawn's festival lifers save their best dancing for the sunrise set.
Nap like a pro. The Sleep Foundation's napping guide puts the best nap length for adults at about 20 minutes and no longer than 30, because waking from deep sleep can leave you groggier than before. Set an alarm.
Count it as cardio. The CDC lists "vigorous dancing" as vigorous-intensity activity and says adults need 75 minutes of vigorous activity a week, or 150 of moderate. A proper sunrise set can cover your week before breakfast.
Plan the night like a set list:
- Eat a real dinner. Festival fries are a side dish, not a strategy.
- Pick three must-see sets and let the rest be happy accidents.
- Rest between peaks. Twenty minutes off your feet buys hours on them.
- Agree on a meeting spot and a ride home before the music starts.
Frances, the 74-year-old piano teacher in our story Make Way for Nana, reaches her granddaughter's sunrise set at a Hungarian psytrance festival in a camping trolley, a completely valid mode of transport.
Confidence is the outfit
Here's the secret every veteran learns eventually: nobody on the dance floor is grading you. Dana, the 43-year-old lawyer in our story Motion to Dance, spends her first ecstatic dance pressed against the lodge window, waiting for someone to judge the room. Nobody does. By Sunday's sunrise session she's dancing barefoot on the lawn in a Mystical Egypt hoodie and cloak.
Wear the thing that makes you stand a little taller. The twenty-somethings asking where you got your cloak aren't being polite. They're taking notes.
Every Magus Fawn piece is made to order: 7–11 business days of production, then 6–14 business days of delivery, so order about five weeks ahead. US shipping is free on orders of $70 or more. All sales are final, so if you're between sizes, email your measurements to art@magusfawn.com.

Frequently asked questions
Do people over 40 go to Burning Man?
Yes, in large numbers. Burning Man's Black Rock City Census put the median participant age at 36 in 2023, which means roughly half the city was older than that, and the median has hovered around 35 since 2013. Expect plenty of burners in their 40s, 50s and beyond at camps, on art cars and at sunrise.
How long should you nap before a rave?
About 20 minutes. The Sleep Foundation says the best nap length for adults is about 20 minutes and no longer than 30, because waking from deep sleep can leave you groggy. Take it in the late afternoon or early evening, set an alarm, then eat a proper dinner before heading out for the night.
Is it OK to sit down at a rave?
Absolutely. Resting between sets is how veterans make it to sunrise. The World Health Organization's safe-listening standard even recommends that venues offer quiet zones where people can rest their ears. Find a chill space, a bench or a patch of grass away from the speakers, sip some water, then head back for the next drop.
Do Magus Fawn joggers have an elastic waist?
Yes. Magus Fawn joggers have an elastic waist with a drawstring, cuffed legs and side pockets. The fabric is 96% recycled polyester and 4% elastane at a listed 308 g/m², with a cotton-feel face and brushed vegan fleece inside. They're a slim fit in XS–3XL, so order one or two sizes up for a looser fit.
