It's 4 a.m., and the walk back to camp is the longest, loveliest mile of the night.
The last set ended twenty minutes ago, but the kick drum is still living in your ribs. An art car glides past wrapped in blue light. The dust under your boots has gone cool, the sky over the mountains is turning the color of a ripe plum, and your breath has started to show.
You pull the hood up. You zip the front closed. Your hands sink into two deep side pockets, your phone rides in the zippered pocket inside, and the faux-fur lining sits soft against your neck, still holding every degree the dance floor gave you. The wind picks up. Your friends are huddled and laughing a few steps ahead, and you slow down, in no hurry at all.
That walk is the whole answer to "are festival cloaks worth it?" The rest of this guide is the fine print.
We're Magus and Lylyth Fawn, Los Angeles visionary artists, and our cloak catalog runs to 51 designs across 183 men's and women's listings. So yes, we're biased. We'll show our work anyway: the real specs, the real math, and our customers in their own words.
Are festival cloaks worth it?

Yes, if your festivals run past sunset and you'll wear it often. A good festival cloak does the work of a jacket and a camp blanket at once, and a Magus Fawn cloak adds original visionary art on top. At $250 it's an investment, so it pays off through cold nights, camp mornings and everyday winter wear.
The hesitation is always the price. Phil felt it too, reviewing an Angel Catcher cloak in October 2023: "I was pretty dang skeptical to make this purchase due to price… Was it worth it? Hell YES it was!"
Three questions decide it for most people:
- How many cold nights do you get a year? Camping festivals, burns and winter raves all count. So does a January warehouse queue.
- Do you want one layer instead of three? A lined, hooded cloak retires the hoodie-jacket-blanket juggling act.
- Do you love the art? Your back is the most-seen thing you own at a festival.
Angel Catcher is a good place to start, because it has 33 cloak listings in about 20 colorways, more than any other design we make. Its sacred geometry blooms outward like a star, so a whole camp can match in different colors. The Purple Angel Catcher women's festival cloak ($250) carries it in violet, in a unisex fit from XS to 5XL.
What makes a good festival cloak?

A good festival cloak has a hood that covers your head and neck, a front that closes fully, a soft lining, pockets you'll actually use and a print that lasts. Every Magus Fawn cloak is built to that list: micro-mink poly outer, fluffy faux-fur fleece lining, double front zipper, heavy drawstrings and four pockets.
Our checklist for any rave cloak, ours included:
| Look for | Why it matters | On a Magus Fawn cloak |
|---|---|---|
| A real hood | Ears, neck and dusty hair, covered in one move | Hooded, with heavy drawstrings |
| A front that closes | One tie at the throat leaves the rest open | Double front zipper |
| A soft lining | It touches your skin all night | Faux-fur microfiber fleece in black or white, listed fabric weight 200 g/m² |
| Usable pockets | Hands, phone and keys need a home | Four, one zippered |
| A print that lasts | Ink sitting on top of fabric can wear away | Dye-sublimated: the ink becomes part of the fiber |
Anyone searching for a fleece-lined cloak or a sherpa cloak wants softness against the skin, because the lining is the part of a cloak you actually feel all night. You choose the faux-fur lining in black or white when you order, so the inside can match your style as well as the outside.
The checklist holds for every design, including the boldest one. The Hearts & Roses women's festival cloak ($250) swirls rose-pink and magenta marbling that curls into hearts down the back, a love letter you can zip yourself into, in sizes XS to 5XL.
Are cloaks good for winter?

Yes, as the outer layer of a winter outfit. A Magus Fawn cloak pairs a micro-mink outer with a fluffy faux-fur fleece lining and a hood, and its warmth grows with what you wear underneath. We don't publish a temperature rating. Layering is how you tune it, from a breezy beach night to unexpected snow.
Burning Man's own FAQ, for a desert famous for its heat, notes that "pre-dawn temperatures can approach freezing." Gem & Jam in the Tucson desert, New Year's Eve at Countdown NYE and Washington's Okanogan Family Barter Faire deliver the same plot twist after dark.
Build warmth as a stack, with the cloak as the lid:
| The night ahead | Under the cloak |
|---|---|
| Cool: summer forest or beach night | Tee and leggings |
| Cold: winter desert or New Year's Eve | Hoodie, joggers over leggings |
| Snow, or the hour before sunrise | Hoodie, joggers, base layer, hat |
The zipper is your thermostat: open on the dance floor, closed for the walk. The hood goes up the moment you stop moving, while you're still warm.
One buyer, writing in March 2023 about a Madriax cloak: "I was in the snow accidentally and stayed incredibly warm thanks to this cloak! Has pockets too!" The Madriax women's festival cloak ($250), unisex XS–5XL, is a starry violet and indigo galaxy with a blue mandala down the back, for carrying a night sky into the sunrise (read the story behind it: Facing the Wrong Way).
For a winter cloak that looks like the season, the Metallic Blue Fractal men's festival cloak ($250) runs chrome-blue fractal swirls over deep royal and navy, like frost forming on steel, in sizes XS to 5XL (read the story behind it: Frost on Steel).
What size cloak do I need for layering?

Size up. Magus Fawn cloaks come in a unisex fit from XS to 5XL, and our FAQ suggests sizing up for outerwear, "sometimes even 2 sizes up to fit extra layers under." Go one size up for a hoodie underneath and two for a hoodie plus extra layers. Expect a generous length, too.
A roomy cloak drapes and zips easily over everything else. Between sizes? Take the larger one.
On length, Tyler left the most useful note we've read, reviewing an Ophanim cloak in November 2025: "Very cozy, a little longer than expected." On a cold night, long is lovely: more of you under the lining.
The Ophanim are the angelic "wheels" of the Book of Ezekiel, wheels within wheels with rims full of eyes (Wikipedia). Ours glows in violet and lavender. The Ophanim men's festival cloak ($250) is one of our favorite festival cloaks for men, in sizes XS to 5XL.
Every cloak is made to order and all sales are final, so if you're unsure, email your measurements to art@magusfawn.com. We typically reply within 1–2 business days.
Do festival cloaks have pockets?

Ours do, four of them. Every Magus Fawn cloak has two deep side pockets for your hands and two interior stash pockets, one of them zippered, all behind a double front zipper. Many cloaks close with a single tie or clasp at the throat, and some skip pockets, so check before you buy.
Pockets feel like a detail until 2 a.m., when your hands are cold and someone hands you kandi. How veterans map four pockets:
- Zippered inside pocket: phone, ID, card, car key.
- Open inside pocket: earplugs, lip balm, the kandi you're saving to trade.
- Side pockets: your hands, a headlamp for the walk home, and a snack for the campmate who swears they aren't hungry.
The zip front closes the whole cloak against the wind and opens in a second on the dance floor, so it never needs a hand holding it shut.
If you came here searching for a wizard cloak, meet ours. Forest Wizard sets mirrored horned skulls wreathed in flowers and vines among cream and rose-gold mandalas on black: skulls that grew a garden. The Forest Wizard men's festival cloak ($250) does Halloween in October and cold nights all year, in sizes XS to 5XL (read the story behind it: The Trader in the Wizard Cloak).
How do you care for a fleece-lined cloak?
Gently, and on cold. The care instructions for every Magus Fawn cloak: machine wash cold with like colors, no bleach, tumble dry low (hang drying is best), no ironing and no dry cleaning. Because the art is dye-sublimated, the ink is part of the fiber, so the colors won't fade and the image won't crack.
That's the label. Our general laundry habits on top of it:
- Empty all four pockets. A forgotten earplug is harmless; a forgotten lip balm becomes the whole load's business.
- Zip the front closed before it goes in, so the zipper teeth stay off the lining.
- Shake the dust out outside. Festival dust belongs to the festival.
A cloak that pulls night duty as a blanket earns that care. Nicholas, writing in December 2023 about a first Sacred Grounds cloak: "First cloak ever. Super comfortable and warm. Fell asleep with it on. Kept me warm all night."
How much does a festival cloak cost per wear?
Less than the price tag suggests, if you wear it the way we do. A $250 Magus Fawn cloak worn 25 times works out to $10 a wear, and 50 wears brings it to $5. Count festival nights, camp mornings, winter dog walks and costume parties, and the wears add up fast.
| Times worn | Cost per wear |
|---|---|
| 12 (four nights at three festivals) | $20.83 |
| 25 (add a winter of weekend walks) | $10.00 |
| 50 (a second season at that pace) | $5.00 |
The secret is that a cloak doesn't stay at the festival. We wear our own pieces "everywhere, all the time": "at home, out at the park with the kids, fire dancing, at the beach, even shopping at the farmer's market."
Free US shipping on orders of $70 or more covers a cloak, too.
Thomas skipped the math entirely, reviewing an Acid Melt cloak in December 2022: "One of the best purchases I've ever made in my entire life." Acid Melt pours rainbow fractal flames down the back, bright enough to find your friends by. The Acid Melt men's festival cloak ($250) is a mens cloak made for sunrise sets, in sizes XS to 5XL (read the story behind it: Make Way for Nana).
Who should buy a rave cloak?
Buy a rave cloak if you camp at festivals, chase sunrise sets, run cold or go to desert, mountain and winter events where nights drop fast. A Magus Fawn cloak suits anyone who wants their warm layer to double as wearable art. If your calendar is all humid summer afternoons, a hoodie is the easier first step.
A cloak is your next upgrade if:
- You camp. It's your coat at night and your blanket at the campfire.
- You stay for the last set, the coldest and often best hour.
- You're the friend who reaches for a layer at sunset.
Start with something lighter if:
- Your festivals stay tropical all night. A crop hoodie will see more use.
- You're buying blind on size. A one-size hooded blanket is the easy gift.
The best rave cloaks disappear in the most useful way. George, reviewing a Madriax cloak in May 2023: "So comfortable you almost forgot how cool it looks!"
So, are festival cloaks worth it? If you're the one still out there when the sky goes from plum to gold, yes. The walk back to camp is waiting. Make it the best part of the night.

Frequently asked questions
Can you wear a festival cloak in the rain?
A cloak is a warmth layer, not a rain shell. Magus Fawn cloaks have a micro-mink outer and a fluffy faux-fur fleece lining, and we make no water-resistance claim for them. For showers, wear a rain poncho or shell over the top, then zip into your dry cloak back at camp when the clouds pass.
Are Magus Fawn cloaks real fur?
No. The lining is faux fur: an ultra-soft, fluffy microfiber fleece in black or white, under a micro-mink poly outer. Every Magus Fawn material is 100% vegan friendly, so you get the cozy feel of fur without any animal products, and it goes in a regular washing machine on cold.
What's the difference between men's and women's festival cloaks?
Magus Fawn's men's and women's cloak listings share the same spec, and both are described as a unisex fit from XS to 5XL: micro-mink outer, faux-fur fleece lining, double front zipper, heavy drawstrings and four pockets. Choose the artwork and colorway you love, and size up if you'll layer a hoodie underneath.
How long does a Magus Fawn cloak take to arrive?
Every Magus Fawn cloak is made to order. Production takes 7–11 business days, then delivery takes 6–14 business days, so plan on 13 to 25 business days in all. US shipping is free on orders of $70 or more, and all sales are final, so check your size before you order.
