Rave Tops: Crop Tops, Tube Tops and Tanks That Move With You

|Magus Fawn

Sooner or later, everyone at the day stage finds their way to the misting arch.

Dancers drift through the cool spray, laughing, arms up. The sun is straight overhead, the bassline warm and round, and every top on the dance floor is a different answer to the same bright sky. A gold Egyptian tube top flashes past with bare shoulders. A violet unicorn rears on a one-shoulder crop. Someone in long teal mesh sleeves spins under the water like a peacock in a fountain, and a marbled velvet tank catches the light like poured paint.

Rave tops are the piece people see first and the piece you feel all day. Pick well and you forget you're wearing it, the highest compliment a festival top can earn.

We're Magus and Lylyth Fawn, Los Angeles visionary artists, and every print here started in our studio. We choose tops the way we'd shop for a friend: coverage first, then pairing, then the hour of the night.

What are the main types of rave tops?

Rave tops come in five main shapes, from least to most coverage: the tube top, the one-shoulder crop top, the cropped T-shirt, the tank top and the long-sleeve mesh top. Each one trades skin for sleeve differently, so choose by the weather, the music and how much of the art you'd like on show.

Top Coverage Fabric (per listing) Best moment
Tube top Shoulders and arms bare, double-layered front 88% poly / 12% spandex, 210 g/m² Sunny day stages, beach and pool parties
One-shoulder crop top One shoulder bare, midriff bare 80% poly / 20% spandex, 230 g/m² House and trance afternoons
Cropped T-shirt Short raglan sleeves, midriff bare 95% poly / 5% spandex microfiber, 180 g/m² All-day comfort, first festivals
Crushed velvet tank Full torso, arms bare 95% poly / 5% spandex crushed velvet, 240 g/m² Night sets under lasers, any body, any gender
Mesh top Long sleeves, mock neck, sheer 95% poly / 5% spandex mesh Layering over a tube top, techno nights

All are dye-sublimated, so the art becomes part of the fiber.

How revealing should a rave top be?

A rave top should show exactly as much skin as feels good to you, and no more. Raves welcome everything from bandeau tops to long sleeves. A good test: pick the top you'd happily dance in for six hours, then check the event's own dress guidelines, since family-friendly and daytime festivals sometimes publish them.

Coverage is a sliding scale. Wikipedia defines the tube top as "a shoulderless, sleeveless garment" that "wraps around the upper torso," a shape that grew popular in the 1970s and returned in the 1990s and 2000s. It's still the boldest neckline on the field.

Egyptian Atlantis tube top rave top: gold pyramids, all-seeing eyes and temple columns on midnight navy

The Egyptian Atlantis tube top ($40) packs a whole sunken temple onto a strapless band: gold pyramids with all-seeing eyes, winged guardians, obelisks and a radiant emblem at the center, all on midnight navy. The listing calls it a high-elastic, off-the-shoulder top with a double-layered front for added coverage, in 88% poly / 12% spandex at 210 g/m², regular fit, sizes 2XS–3XL.

One step along the scale, the Amethyst Unicorn one-shoulder crop top ($40) sweeps a single strap over one shoulder and lets a white unicorn rear up through violet amethyst shards and indigo smoke across the chest. It's 80% poly / 20% spandex at 230 g/m², a skinny fit that hugs and stretches, in XS–2XL. Its love story: Under One Hood.

What is the difference between a crop top and a cropped T-shirt?

A crop top is any top cut short enough to show the waist, from a strapless bandeau to a one-shoulder piece. A cropped T-shirt is one specific kind: a regular tee with sleeves and a crew neck, shortened above the navel. It gives you the midriff of a crop top with the easy coverage of a tee.

Wikipedia's crop top entry says the style "reveals and exposes the waist, navel, or abdomen," and traces midriff tops back to at least the Bronze Age. The cropped tee is the friendliest of the family: sleeves for the shoulders, air for the waist.

Temple of Sound cropped T-shirt festival crop top: a lavender and violet temple of speaker cones

The Temple of Sound cropped T-shirt ($40) builds a symmetrical temple out of speaker cones in lavender, violet and slate, with a serene face at the center and a glowing violet dome at the hem. Raglan sleeves keep the arms free. It's 95% poly / 5% spandex microfiber at 180 g/m², regular fit, XS–2XL. Its soundsystem story is Play for the Floor.

Is a tank top or a crop top better for a rave?

Choose a tank top for the most coverage and the widest size range, and a crop top for the most airflow and a bare midriff. A crushed velvet tank covers the whole torso, catches stage lights and suits every body and gender. A crop top shows more skin and pairs beautifully with high-waisted shorts or leggings.

Crop tops own the sunny afternoon. Velvet tanks own the laser hours, when the crushed pile turns every beam into glitter. Ours are unisex tanks in S–5XL, the easiest top to share across a crew.

Alien Dimensions crushed velvet festival tank top: alien faces and Flower of Life geometry in violet and blue

The Alien Dimensions crushed velvet tank top ($60) is a whole gathering of almond-eyed visitors in violet, blue and pink, circling Flower of Life geometry with a gold star near the hem: psytrance energy from collar to waist. It's crushed velvet, 95% poly / 5% spandex at 240 g/m², crew neck, regular fit, S–5XL. Read its canyon psytrance story: The Stranger at the Low-Water Crossing.

Liquid Fire crushed velvet festival tank top: marbled red, gold, violet and blue like poured paint

For the bass stage, the Liquid Fire crushed velvet tank top ($60) swirls red-orange, gold, violet and cobalt through black veins like paint poured across a tabletop. Same 240 g/m² crushed velvet and S–5XL size range, and it looks as good with black cargo pants as with bright shorts.

Do you need sunscreen under a mesh top?

Yes. Sheer mesh lets a lot of sunlight through, so treat the skin underneath as uncovered and apply sunscreen before you dress. The Skin Cancer Foundation rates dense cloth as more protective than sheer or loosely woven fabric, and notes that tight clothing stretches, opening the weave. A mesh top is for style, with sunscreen doing the protecting.

The Skin Cancer Foundation's guide to sun-protective clothing puts it plainly: densely woven cloth "is more protective than sheer, thin or loosely woven cloth," and "Tight clothing can stretch and reduce the level of protection offered." A skinny-fit mesh top is both, so add a hat and find shade between sets.

Angel Catcher Teal mesh top rave top: teal and blue feathered wings and starburst medallions on black

After sunset, mesh shines. The Angel Catcher Teal mesh top ($55) spreads teal and cobalt feathered wings around starburst medallions and an ornate silver pendant on black, with a mock neck and long sleeves. The listing calls it sheer and see-through, 95% poly / 5% spandex mesh in a skinny fit, with sizes XS–6XL on the size menu. Wear it over a tube top or bralette, and for mesh from neckline to hem, our festival dresses guide covers the sheer mesh bodycon dress.

Should you wear leggings, shorts or lantern pants with a crop top?

All three work, so match the bottom to the music and the temperature. Shorts are the classic for hot day stages and keep the look light. Leggings give a sleek, head-to-toe line and add warmth after dark. Lantern pants flow and billow, made for psytrance and ecstatic dance. Let one piece carry the print, and the outfit sings.

Our rule: one hero print per outfit, with a supporting piece that echoes one of its colors or stays solid.

Cosmic Cross Silver cargo shorts: silver-white filigree and star-cross linework on slate

For shorts, the Cosmic Cross Silver cargo shorts ($65; $70 in 4XL–5XL) trace silver-white filigree and star-cross linework across slate and lavender-gray, knee length, with a button-closure waistband and multiple cargo pockets for earplugs and sunscreen. They're 100% poly at 190 g/m² in a denim-like fabric, regular fit, S–5XL.

Sacred Grounds men's festival leggings: copper and rust ovals scattered over black with a round gold medallion at the knee

For leggings, the Sacred Grounds men's festival leggings ($65) scatter copper and rust ovals across black, with a round gold medallion at the knee that only shows up close. They're 90% poly / 10% spandex microfiber in a skinny fit, XS–3XL, and they look sharp under a velvet tank or a mesh top. For flowing legs, browse our lantern pants.

Layering rave tops from noon to 3 a.m.

A festival day is three climates in a row, and one set of tops carries you through all of them.

  • Noon: tube top or one-shoulder crop, sunscreen underneath, shorts, a hat. Maximum air.
  • Golden hour: pull the mesh top on over the tube top. The sleeves add a little warmth and the print doubles up.
  • Laser hours: swap to a velvet tank and let the stage lights play on the pile.
  • 3 a.m.: add a warm outer layer. A crushed velvet crop hoodie or a fleece-lined cloak goes over any of these tops, and our guide to staying warm at a festival at night maps out the whole cold-night ritual.

By genre: bright crops for house afternoons, velvet for trance and psy nights, black-based prints for techno. Our guide to what to wear to a rave goes deeper.

Frequently asked questions

Can guys wear crop tops to a rave?

Absolutely. Men have worn crop tops since the 1970s, and the style came back strong in the mid-2010s. At raves you'll see guys in cropped tees, cut-off tanks and mesh tops on every dance floor. Pair one with cargo shorts or leggings, and choose a regular-fit cropped tee if you'd like easy sleeves.

Do rave tops need to match your bottoms?

No. Pick one hero print and let the other piece support it, either in a solid color or a print that shares a color from the top. A gold-and-navy top with silver shorts works because both stay cool and metallic. Two bold prints shine together when they share a palette, and accessories can tie everything together.

What sizes do Magus Fawn rave tops come in?

Magus Fawn tube tops run 2XS–3XL, one-shoulder crop tops and cropped T-shirts run XS–2XL, mesh tops run XS–6XL, and crushed velvet tanks run S–5XL. The one-shoulder crop and mesh top are skinny fit, so they hug. If you're between sizes, email your measurements to art@magusfawn.com for help.

Is a one-shoulder top comfortable for dancing?

Yes. A one-shoulder top has a single strap anchoring it, so there's nothing to slide off both shoulders, and the open side keeps you cool. The Magus Fawn version is 80% poly and 20% spandex, a stretchy, body-hugging skinny fit that moves with you through a full set without adjusting.
