Festival Shirts for Men: Velvet Polos, Hooded Tanks and Tees Beyond the Basic Black

|Magus Fawn

From the hill above the main stage, the men's dress code is easy to read: black tee, black shorts, sunglasses, a few thousand times over.

It works. It has always worked. Then a velvet collar catches the light ten rows ahead, gold phoenix wings spread across a stranger's chest, and it hits you that festival shirts for men can do a lot more than blend into the dark.

Over by the sound booth, a friend in a hooded tank lifts both arms at the drop, and three eclipsed suns rise with him. Nobody's in costume. They're just wearing art.

We're Magus and Lylyth Fawn, Los Angeles visionary artists, and every print here starts in our studio. These are the three shirts we'd hand a friend ready to give the black tee a weekend off, with when to wear each by temperature, stage and size.

Which festival shirts stand out without looking like a costume?

A printed shirt with an everyday silhouette stands out without tipping into costume. At Magus Fawn we build three: a crushed velvet polo with a real collar, a 100% cotton hooded tank, and an all-over-print tee. The cut is familiar, so the art does the talking. Pair one bold print with solid shorts or joggers.

A costume asks people to guess what you are; a printed shirt shows them what you love. Every piece here is dye-sublimated: "colors won't fade and image won't crack — ever."

Shirt Fabric Listed weight Its best hour
Crushed velvet polo 95% polyester / 5% spandex crushed velvet 240 g/m² Sunset into night, club and arena stages
Cotton hooded tank 100% cotton 310 g/m² Hot afternoons and peak-time dancing
Cotton tee 100% cotton 190 g/m² All day, and under a cloak after dark

What is a crushed velvet polo shirt?

A crushed velvet polo shirt is a short-sleeve collared shirt cut from crushed velvet instead of cotton piqué. Magus Fawn's version is 95% polyester and 5% spandex at a listed 240 g/m², dye-sublimated edge to edge, regular fit in S–5XL. The collar reads dressed; the crushed pile throws back stage light.

The polo started life on a tennis court. René Lacoste first wore his short-sleeved piqué shirt at the 1926 U.S. championships, and the polo shirt's history notes that "the piqué collar could be worn upturned to protect the neck skin from the sun." That collar still earns its place at a desert afternoon set. (A velvet polo saved "for an occasion" gets its big reveal in our winter techno story Snowed In.)

Golden Phoenix crushed velvet men's polo shirt: a gold filigree phoenix with sapphire and violet wings on black

The Golden Phoenix crushed velvet men's polo shirt ($65) spreads a gold filigree phoenix across black, wings fanned in sapphire and violet, teal flame rising toward the collar and a green medallion at its heart. The phoenix is our bird of rebirth: burn bright, rise again, make the sunrise set (read the story behind it: The Fourth Feather).

Mystical Egypt polo shirt for a rave: gold-line pharaohs and glowing rainbow points on navy

The Mystical Egypt crushed velvet polo shirt ($65) runs a column of glowing points down the chest, violet at the collar to red near the hem, through gold-line pharaohs, ankhs, an Eye of Horus and a pyramid crowned with an eye on deep navy. A temple wall you can dance in (its story, Motion to Dance, is a retreat journal written on an ecstatic dance floor).

Angel Catcher Teal velvet polo: a Flower of Life medallion between pale aqua wings with teal sacred geometry on charcoal

The Angel Catcher Teal crushed velvet polo shirt ($65) is the quiet one: a Flower of Life medallion framed by pale aqua wings, with Metatron's Cube and six-point stars in teal circles over marbled charcoal. Sacred geometry, worn low-key, for trance nights.

Cotton hooded tank or jersey sleeveless hoodie: which should you buy?

Buy the cotton hooded tank if you like a natural fiber, a kangaroo pocket and the widest sizes; buy the jersey sleeveless hoodie for the lightest fabric. Magus Fawn's cotton tank is 100% cotton at a listed 310 g/m²; the jersey version is 95% polyester and 5% spandex at 180 g/m² in S–2XL.

Both keep the hood and drop the sleeves. The hood is the whole idea: shade at a 3 p.m. set, a little cover when the wind picks up after dark.

Alien Dimensions cotton hooded tank top for men: big-eyed aliens in lavender, violet and sky blue around a white Flower of Life

The Alien Dimensions cotton sleeveless hooded tank ($80) is a crowd of big-eyed aliens in lavender, violet and sky blue swirling around a white Flower of Life, with a gold star near the hem and a white-lined hood. A whole psytrance dance floor in one garment (read its canyon story: The Stranger at the Low-Water Crossing).

Solar Eclipse men's festival tank top with a hood: three eclipsed suns with golden coronas above a silver mandala on charcoal

The Solar Eclipse cotton sleeveless hooded tank ($80) lines up three eclipsed suns with golden coronas across the chest above a silver mandala wrapped in a gold spiral, with teal and coral scrollwork on deep charcoal. Made for the afternoon set that runs into dusk (read Two Minutes of Totality, our eclipse festival love story).

Void Mandala cotton sleeveless hoodie: overlapping silver-grey mandalas of every size on black with a white-lined hood

The Void Mandala cotton sleeveless hooded tank ($80) layers silver-grey mandalas of every size over black under a white-lined hood: the techno fan's hooded tank, black-clothing code respected, with texture that pays off up close.

Polo, hooded tank or tee: a temperature guide

A festival day can swing through three seasons. Here's how we reach for each shirt as the thermometer moves: a festival lifer's habit, not a fabric rating.

Temperature Reach for Add
85°F and up, full sun Cotton hooded tank, hood up for shade Sunscreen on every bare inch, a hat
70s, golden hour Velvet polo or cotton tee Cargo shorts, sunglasses
60s, after dark Velvet polo or cotton tee Joggers, a hoodie tied at the waist
50s and below Cotton tee as the base layer A cloak, zipped for the walk to camp

Bare shoulders come with homework. The American Academy of Dermatology's sunscreen guidance says to "apply sunscreen to all skin not covered by clothing," and to reapply every two hours and right after sweating, which on a dance floor means often.

Blue Feathery Fractal cotton T-shirt for festivals: mirrored indigo and violet plumes over sea-green and teal fractal curls

The tee works every shift. The Blue Feathery Fractal cotton T-shirt ($60) mirrors indigo and violet plumes over sea-green and teal fractal curls, one big pattern from across the field and a thousand small ones from a hug away. Lylyth makes fractal art, and this is her hand at its most wearable: 100% cotton at a listed 190 g/m², crew neck (our psychedelic T-shirts guide compares it with the crushed velvet tee).

Dreamweaver men's cargo shorts: a crystalline blue wolf and a teal dragon in electric blue

Below the waist, let one piece lead. The Dreamweaver men's cargo shorts ($65; $70 in 4XL and 5XL) pack a crystalline blue wolf with amber eyes, a teal dragon and stepped pyramids into electric blue, with a button waist and cargo pockets, 100% polyester at a listed 190 g/m². Wear them under the Void Mandala tank or a plain black tee.

Cosmic Cross Yellow men's festival cloak worn hood up: gold knotwork over neon green and black, falling to the knee

When the night drops into the 50s, the shirt becomes the base layer. The Cosmic Cross Yellow men's festival cloak ($250) zips over any shirt here: gold knotwork over neon green and black, reaching the knee on our model. It has a micro-mink poly outer, one ultra-soft fluffy microfiber fleece lining in black or white faux fur, a double front zipper and four pockets. Our FAQ suggests sizing up for outerwear, "sometimes even 2 sizes up to fit extra layers under."

Matching the shirt to the stage

Every genre has an unwritten dress code, and a shirt is the easiest nod to it. Full genre formulas live in What Guys Actually Wear to Raves; here it's the shirt alone.

  • House: sun-washed color, easy shapes. Velvet once the sun drops: the Mystical Egypt polo at golden hour.
  • Techno: black, utilitarian, unisex. The Void Mandala tank stays monochrome; the Golden Phoenix polo makes its collar your one detail.
  • Trance: pastels and electric blue. The Angel Catcher Teal polo or the Blue Feathery Fractal tee, kandi optional.
  • Psytrance: mandalas and fractals. Visionary art's home crowd: the Alien Dimensions or Solar Eclipse tank at the sunrise set.
  • Bass: hoodies and joggers, then the heat. On hot days, a hooded tank keeps the hood. Our dubstep rave outfits guide covers the headbanger's full kit.

How should a men's festival tank top fit?

A men's festival tank top should skim the body with room to raise both arms without the hem riding up. Magus Fawn's cotton hooded tank is a regular fit, offered in XS–5XL on the size menu. Our cotton hoodies list 3–5% shrinkage after the first wash, so if you're between sizes, go up one.

Piece Fit Sizes
Crushed velvet polo Regular S–5XL
Cotton hooded tank Regular XS–5XL
Cotton tee Regular XS–5XL
Men's cargo shorts Regular S–5XL

Care: wash cold with like colors, no bleach, tumble dry low, no iron, no dry cleaning. Hang drying is best, and on velvet it keeps the sheen.

Made for you, one at a time. Every piece is made to order: production takes 7–11 business days, then delivery takes 6–14 business days. All sales are final, so if you're unsure, email your measurements to art@magusfawn.com. US shipping is free at $70+: a tank ships free on its own, and a polo or tee crosses the line with any second piece.

Gifting a shirt? To arrive by Thursday, December 24, 2026 on the longest production and delivery times, order by Tuesday, November 17; mid-range timing stretches that to Wednesday, November 25.

The black tee always has a place in the bag. Pack one shirt with art on it too, and let it catch the light at golden hour.

Frequently asked questions

Should you tuck in a polo shirt?

At a festival, leave it untucked. An untucked polo moves freely when you dance, lets air reach your waist, and keeps the full print visible, hem included. Save the tuck for a dinner before the party. Magus Fawn's crushed velvet polo has a regular fit, so it sits neatly over shorts or joggers.

Why does a sleeveless hoodie have a hood?

For shade and a little warmth without the heat of sleeves. The hood shields your head and neck from the afternoon sun, then blocks the breeze after dark, while bare arms stay cool for dancing. Magus Fawn's cotton hooded tanks pair a drawstring hood with a front kangaroo pocket for earplugs and a lip balm.

What shorts go with a festival tank top?

Cargo shorts, athletic shorts and cotton shorts all work, so choose by pockets and print. If the tank is loud, go solid below. If the shorts carry the art, wear a quieter tank in black or in one color pulled from the print. Magus Fawn's men's cargo shorts come in S–5XL with cargo pockets.

What sizes do Magus Fawn crushed velvet polos come in?

Magus Fawn crushed velvet polos come in S, M, L, XL, 2XL, 3XL, 4XL and 5XL, in a regular fit, at $65 in every size. Each one is made to order. If you plan to layer a long-sleeve tee underneath, or you're between sizes, email your measurements to art@magusfawn.com before ordering.
