A rain poncho, folded to the size of a paperback, rides in a back pocket along San Diego's waterfront in March. Ten weeks later the same pocket holds sunscreen beside a lake in Kern County, and the poncho sleeps at the bottom of a duffel.
That swap is spring festival season in one gesture. It opens with marine drizzle and Miami humidity and closes with the Coachella Valley logging two dozen 90°F days in May, while Detroit still reaches for a hoodie once the lights come up.
We're Magus and Lylyth Fawn, two visionary artists from Los Angeles. What follows walks March, April and May one at a time, with spring festival and spring rave outfits for 2027 pinned to NOAA climate normals and official dates. One idea runs through it: dress for the night, and let the afternoon borrow from it.
What should you wear to a spring festival?
Start with a light printed base and keep one warm layer within reach, because spring nights run far cooler than spring afternoons. Magus Fawn's spring kit is a swimsuit, tee or sleeveless hoodie by day, plus a faux-fur-lined cloak, a hooded blanket or fleece joggers by night, chosen by how far the low falls.
How much do spring festival temperatures change from March to May?
A lot, and unevenly. NOAA normals show the Coachella Valley climbing from an 81°F March high to 95°F in May, while San Diego barely moves from 67°F to 70°F. Rain runs the other way: March is the wettest of the three in Southern California, and May is the wettest in Austin and Detroit.
| City (NOAA station) | Festival nearby | Month | Avg high | Avg low |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Miami | Ultra | March | 81°F | 66°F |
| Riverside | Beyond Wonderland | March | 73°F | 46°F |
| San Diego | CRSSD | March | 67°F | 55°F |
| Thermal | Coachella | April | 87°F | 55°F |
| Austin | Burning Flipside | April | 80°F | 59°F |
| Bakersfield | Lightning in a Bottle | May | 84°F | 58°F |
| Detroit | Movement | May | 70°F | 50°F |
Figures are 1991–2020 monthly averages from the NOAA NCEI U.S. Climate Normals, rounded: a typical month, not a forecast.
How do you dress for a festival in March?
Pack for two climates. March normals put Miami's average low near 66°F and Riverside's, a short drive from San Bernardino, near 46°F, so one coast wants swimwear and the other wants a cloak. Magus Fawn's March plan is a light base everywhere, a cloak for inland nights, and a hood for coastal drizzle.
March festival outfits in 2027 split across a single weekend:
- Bayfront heat. Ultra's official site lists the 2027 edition for March 26–28 in Miami's Bayfront Park. See our Ultra outfit guide.
- Wonderland cold. Beyond Wonderland SoCal's official site names March 26 and 27, 2027, at San Bernardino's NOS Events Center. In nearby Riverside, NOAA counts about 22 March nights below 50°F. See our Beyond Wonderland looks.
- Bayside drizzle. CRSSD's spring 2027 dates are TBA on its official site. San Diego averages 1.46 inches of rain in March, 0.28 in May (CRSSD outfits).

The Wonderland night cloak. Spring's investment piece is the one that works from March to May: the Pink Cosmic Flower of Life women's festival cloak ($250). Rose and violet fractal spirals unfurl across it like fiddlehead ferns, over a faint Flower of Life grid, the ancient pattern of overlapping circles that sacred geometry treats as a seed of creation. It's micro-mink poly outside with an ultra-soft microfiber fleece lining in black or white faux fur (listed at 200 g/m²), a double front zipper, heavy drawstrings and four pockets, two of them interior stash pockets. Unisex fit, XS–5XL.

The Miami base. The Liquid Cosmos one-piece swimsuit ($65; $68 in 2XL, $69 in 3XL) runs molten ribbons of magenta, scarlet, emerald, teal and cobalt into one another, threaded with gold, a nebula caught mid-stir that doubles as a bodysuit under shorts. It's 75% recycled poly and 25% elastane at 225 g/m², with a double-layer front, scoop neck and low scoop back, regular fit in XS–3XL.
How do you dress for a festival in April?
Dress for the widest swing of the year. NOAA normals for Thermal, near the Coachella polo fields, put April at 87°F by day and 55°F by night, and AfrikaBurn's guide says its nights "can be freezing." Magus Fawn's April plan pairs a breathing-room top with a serious night layer, sized for the coldest stop on your calendar.
April festival outfits cover three landscapes:
- Polo fields. Coachella shows two weekends, April 9–11 and 16–18, 2027, on its passes page. Thermal averages 13 days of 90°F or more in April (Coachella outfits).
- San Gabriel River land. Burning Flipside lists April 29 to May 3, 2027, just over an hour from Austin, on its event page, with the 2027 theme "Flipside: The Musical." Austin averages 5.04 inches of rain in May (Burning Flipside outfits).
- Karoo autumn. AfrikaBurn lists April 26 to May 2, 2027 on its event page, and its preparation guide says it "is very warm in the day, but nights can be freezing" (AfrikaBurn outfits).

The polo-field hood. Shade for the neck, bare arms for the heat: the Amethyst Unicorn men's sleeveless hoodie ($75) shows a pale unicorn rearing inside a crescent of amethyst crystal shards, on a violet starfield with crystals climbing from the hem. It's 180 g/m² jersey, 95% poly and 5% spandex, regular fit in S–2XL.

The costume for the musical. The Crystal Shroom Kingdom crushed velvet T-shirt ($60 in crushed velvet or cotton, $50 in poly jersey) raises a mirrored city of mushroom-capped spires in violet, teal and emerald around a glowing teal center, a skyline ready for its opening number. Velvet weighs in at 240 g/m²; crew neck, short sleeves, regular fit, XS–5XL.

The Karoo night cloak. The Chakra Mandala men's festival cloak ($250) stacks mandalas down a black ground in the order of the chakras: violet at the hood, then indigo, green, gold around an Om, orange around a star, and red at the hem. It's micro-mink poly outside with an ultra-soft microfiber fleece lining in black or white faux fur (listed at 200 g/m²), a double front zipper, heavy drawstrings and four pockets, unisex fit in XS–5XL (its story: What the Painter Saw).
How do you dress for a festival in May?
Plan for full sun and a cool finish. NOAA puts May in Bakersfield, near Lightning in a Bottle, at 84°F by day and 58°F by night, and Detroit at 70°F and 50°F, with a tenth of an inch of rain or more on nearly eight days. Magus Fawn's May plan: a sun hat, fleece joggers and a cozy camp layer.
May festival outfits follow two shorelines:
- Lake and dust. Lightning in a Bottle lists May 26–30, 2027 at Buena Vista Lake on its official site. See our LIB outfit guide.
- Riverfront techno. Movement lists May 29–31, 2027 at Hart Plaza on its official site. NOAA counts about 16 May nights below 50°F in Detroit; see our Movement Detroit outfits.

The lakeside shade. The Psytrance bucket hat ($50) pours pastel marbling in lilac, pink, tangerine, lime and sky blue across the crown and brim, with a black, white-gridded Flower of Life underbrim in the gallery. A brim that rings the whole head is the entire May assignment. It's 100% poly at 275 g/m² in XS, S/M and L/XL.
The camp-morning blanket. For Lightning in a Bottle's campgrounds, the Electric Dragonscape hooded blanket with ears ($150) is the cozy splurge: a blanket with sleeves, a cat-ear hood, a front quarter zip and an oversized front pocket. An ice-blue dragon with copper-edged horns rises through cobalt and violet crystal, a silver medallion set with sapphire-blue stones at its chest. It's 300 g/m² poly fleece in one oversized size (4XL).

The Detroit legs. Dark enough for techno: the Forest Wizard Teal joggers ($100; $105 in 2XL, $108 in 3XL) set slate hexagon stonework at the waist over deep teal swirls, then plant an antlered stag skull crowned with pink and red roses before a pale spiked sunburst on each outer leg, with gold chains and a jeweled medallion near the cuff. They're 308 g/m² (96% recycled poly, 4% elastane) with a cotton-feel face, brushed vegan fleece inside, cuffed legs, side pockets and an elastic drawstring waist. Slim fit in XS–3XL; the listing suggests 1–2 sizes up for a looser fit.
The spring rule: pack for the low, wear for the high
- Let one warm piece travel all weekend. Knot a hoodie at your hips by day, or roll a cloak into the daypack until the sky goes violet.
- Rain is part of the plot. Ponchos and boots live in our rainy-festival outfit guide.
- Both ends of the thermometer. Desert afternoons get our guide to staying cool at a summer festival; the small hours get staying warm at a festival at night.
When the leaves start to turn, our fall festival outfits guide picks up the story.
Ordering ahead of a March opener
Each Magus Fawn piece is made to order, so the clock starts at checkout: production takes 7–11 business days, and shipping adds another 6–14. Order by Thursday, February 4, 2027, and a US address has it by Friday, March 12 even when both windows run long, a full two weeks before Ultra and Beyond Wonderland open on March 26.
- Leave room for the night layers. On cloaks and hoodies the FAQ's advice is to go up, "sometimes even 2 sizes up to fit extra layers under."
- Final from the first stitch. All sales are final, so if two sizes both look right, email art@magusfawn.com your measurements and we'll settle it together.
- Shipping in one line. Free to US addresses from $70, $8 below that, and from $10 internationally (details on our shipping page).
Dress the season from drizzle to dust: women's cloaks · men's cloaks · hooded blankets · women's swimwear · crushed velvet · bucket hats · joggers
The poncho folds away, the hat goes on, and the art rides along for all of it. Spring is open; go meet it.
Frequently asked questions
Can you wear shorts to a festival in March?
Yes, by day at most March festivals, with a warm layer for after dark. Miami's March nights average about 66°F, so shorts work around the clock at Ultra, but near San Bernardino the average low falls to about 46°F. Pair shorts with a cloak or fleece joggers in the bag for inland nights.
Which spring festivals share a weekend in 2027?
Three pairs overlap, going by the official sites. Ultra (March 26–28) and Beyond Wonderland SoCal (March 26–27) open spring on the same weekend; AfrikaBurn (April 26 to May 2) runs alongside Burning Flipside (April 29 to May 3); and Lightning in a Bottle (May 26–30) overlaps Movement (May 29–31). Coachella's two April weekends stand alone.
Do you need a cloak for a spring festival?
For the nights, often yes. A faux-fur-lined cloak is more than a 66°F Miami evening needs, but spring desert and inland nights fall into the 40s and 50s, and AfrikaBurn's guide says its nights can be freezing. Magus Fawn's cloaks have pockets and a double zipper, so you can open one up, carry it, or wear it closed after midnight.
