AfrikaBurn Outfits 2027: What to Wear in the Tankwa Karoo

|Magus Fawn

A zebra on wheels rolls across the binnekring, striped from bumper to tail, with a dozen dancers waving from its back. Behind it the Karoo scrub runs gold and grey to a ring of bare mountains, and the fine sand from its wheels drifts like chalk dust.

Out in the open, the Clan stands waiting for its night. Someone under a parasol strolls past gifting pancakes to whoever looks hungry.

Knowing what to wear to AfrikaBurn starts with the calendar: it's autumn in the Karoo, so you're packing two seasons into one day. Afternoons run warm and bright, and the nights drop close to freezing.

AfrikaBurn 2027 runs from Monday, April 26 to Sunday, May 2 in the Tankwa Karoo, according to the official AfrikaBurn site. We're Magus and Lylyth Fawn, Los Angeles visionary artists and festival lifers, and here's how we'd pack for Tankwa Town, from bright midday to the night of the Clan.

Tankwa Town in one table: the AfrikaBurn outfit plan

AfrikaBurn falls in the South African autumn, so the Karoo gives you warm days of about 24–29°C (75–85°F) and nights of 2–7°C (35–45°F). Magus Fawn's plan runs from breathable prints and a cap at midday to fleece and a faux-fur-lined cloak once the sun leaves the mountains.

Tankwa hour Karoo conditions Wear
Midday Warm sun on scrub and sand Bodysuit or cotton shorts, a cap, sunglasses
Dusty breeze Fine sand on the move A scarf or buff, closed shoes
Golden hour The art lights up Theme look: a print that asks questions
Clan night 2–7°C (35–45°F) Fleece joggers and a hooded cloak
Camp morning Cold air, bright sky The cloak again, plus a hot drink

Bring all of it from home. The event page calls Tankwa Town "a decommodified space," with no sales, no bartering and only gifts. Ice is the one exception.

What is the AfrikaBurn 2027 theme?

AfrikaBurn's 2027 theme is "The Big Question." The organisers noticed that almost all of the nearly 100 theme submissions they received were questions, so the theme page invites burners to "be bold, be brave and question everything." Magus Fawn's take: wear art that makes people stop and ask.

Visionary art fits right in, because the best prints start conversations: whose face is that, and where does that spiral lead?

Man on a dusty festival field in the Galactic Alien Oracle cotton shorts, lavender and silver alien faces and spiral galaxies: festival shorts for AfrikaBurn

For him, the Galactic Alien Oracle unisex cotton shorts ($65, S–5XL) gather serene alien faces, spiral galaxies and crystal spires in lavender, periwinkle and silver. They're 100% cotton at 245 g/m², with an elastic waistband, side pockets and a back pocket for lip balm.

For her, the Cyber Punk Mech one-shoulder crop top ($40, XS–2XL) sets cobalt, teal and violet machinery glowing with amber flares beneath white geometric linework of cubes, triangles and circles. It's 80% poly and 20% spandex at 230 g/m², in a skinny fit.

How hot does AfrikaBurn get during the day?

Pleasantly warm, with serious sun. AfrikaBurn's late-April afternoons in the Tankwa Karoo typically reach about 24–29°C (75–85°F), with dry air, strong sun and sand that drifts when the wind picks up. Dress light: a bodysuit or cotton shorts, a cap, sunglasses, sunscreen and lip balm, plus closed shoes for walking.

Quaggapedia, AfrikaBurn's online survival guide, recommends exactly that on its prepare page, and its first-timer page asks for two pairs of comfortable closed shoes.

Woman at a festival field in the Liquified Abyss tube top bodysuit, marbled violet, teal, rose and gold swirls with black ladder cut-outs at the waist: a festival bodysuit for warm Karoo days

The bodysuit. The Liquified Abyss tube top bodysuit ($75, XS–2XL) marbles violet, plum, teal, rose and gold, with ladder cut-outs of black straps at the waist. It's 88% poly and 12% spandex at 220 g/m², with transparent shoulder straps and a regular fit.

Woman at a festival in the Amethyst Crystal Unicorn snapback, a pale unicorn among violet crystal peaks above a dark speckled brim: a festival snapback hat for desert sun

The cap. The Amethyst Crystal Unicorn snapback ($40) sets a pale unicorn, mane streaming, inside a cave of amethyst crystal under a starry violet sky, with a dark speckled brim to shade your eyes. It's 100% poly at 150 g/m², one size fits most, with an adjustable snapback closure.

Woman at a festival wearing the Egyptian Atlantis backpack, gold Egyptian motifs on navy with black straps: a festival backpack for a day on the binnekring

The bag. The Egyptian Atlantis backpack ($70) stacks gold Egyptian art on navy: an eye in a winged disc at the top, a tree of life at the center, sphinxes and jackal figures at the base, with a large zip front pocket. It measures 27 × 26 × 13 cm (10.5 × 12 × 5 in).

Feathers, glitter and the Leave No Trace code

AfrikaBurn asks burners to leave two festival favorites at home. Quaggapedia lists "Feathers of any kind, such as boas, which shed and get blown in the wind," and glitter too, even the biodegradable kind, because Leave No Trace volunteers can't tell the difference in the sand.

The swap looks better anyway: let the artwork bring the shimmer. A printed mane, like the unicorn's on that amethyst snapback, never sheds a thing, and Quaggapedia actively recommends costumes and body paint, so dress up boldly.

One more Tankwa habit: keep a clean, dust-free set of clothes in the car for the drive home. And since the site is decommodified, AfrikaBurn's guidance on promoting branded products there is simply "just don't." Buy before you go, then wear it as yours.

What should you wear to the Clan burn?

Wear your warmest layers and add lights. Quaggapedia's FAQ says the Clan usually burns on the Saturday night, and AfrikaBurn's autumn nights in the Karoo fall to about 2–7°C (35–45°F). Magus Fawn's Clan-night kit: fleece joggers, a faux-fur-lined hooded cloak, closed shoes and a headlamp, with fabrics kept well back from the fire.

The Clan comes from San rock art, as the international burners page explains, and the Temple usually follows on Sunday. For a desert burn in fiction, read The Long Road to the Temple.

Man at a festival field in the Metallic Blue Fractal joggers, cobalt and royal-blue mirrored fractal swirls: fleece rave joggers for a cold desert night

The joggers. The Metallic Blue Fractal joggers ($100; $105 in 2XL, $108 in 3XL) mirror cobalt and royal-blue fractal swirls with plum shadows and a scaled spiral at the knees. They're 308 g/m² with brushed vegan fleece inside, cuffed legs and side pockets. The fit is slim, so order one or two sizes up to pull them over shorts.

The cloak. Magus Fawn festival cloaks share one build: a micro-mink outer, an ultra-soft fluffy microfiber fleece lining in black or white faux fur (listed fabric weight 200 g/m²), a double front zipper, heavy drawstrings and four pockets, two deep side pockets plus two interior stash pockets, one of them zippered. Unisex fit, XS–5XL. Nicholas, reviewing a Sacred Grounds cloak in December 2023: "Super comfortable and warm. Fell asleep with it on. Kept me warm all night."

Front view of the Electric Dragonscape men's festival cloak zipped with the hood up on a dusty festival field, cobalt, ice-blue and violet blades: a hooded festival cloak for the Clan burn

For him, the Electric Dragonscape men's festival cloak ($250) carries a silver-white horned dragon across the back, its cobalt, ice-blue and violet wing blades fanning out over a glowing blue mandala. (Its story: Let Her Have the Tube.)

Back view of a woman at a festival main stage in the Lucid women's festival cloak, mirrored iridescent violet, magenta, lime and turquoise symmetry from hood to hem: a hooded cloak for a cold Karoo night

For her, the Lucid women's festival cloak ($250) mirrors iridescent violet, magenta, lime and turquoise from hood to hem in a symmetry that reads like an inkblot test: everyone sees something different, which suits The Big Question perfectly. Under it, stack fleece the way our guide to how to stay warm at a festival at night lays out.

When should you order an AfrikaBurn outfit for 2027?

Aim for Monday, March 1, 2027, and earlier if your parcel is bound for South Africa. Magus Fawn sews each piece after you order; allow up to 11 business days of making and 14 of shipping, which brings a March 1 order to a US doorstep by Monday, April 5, three weeks before the Tankwa gates open.

  • Flying in? Quaggapedia says over half of AfrikaBurn's ticket holders come from overseas. Have your order delivered at home, then pack it in your luggage for Cape Town.
  • Shipping to South Africa? International shipping starts at $10. We're a Los Angeles studio, so give a parcel heading south extra weeks and order earlier.
  • Leave room for layers. For cloaks and hoodies, the Magus Fawn FAQ recommends going up a size, "sometimes even 2 sizes up to fit extra layers under."
  • All sales are final, so if you're torn between two sizes, send your measurements to art@magusfawn.com. We typically reply within 1–2 business days.
  • Shipping within the US is free from $70.

AfrikaBurn shares its week with Texas: Burning Flipside runs April 29 to May 3, 2027, and Colorado's Apogaea follows in early summer. Our guide to regional burns maps the rest of the family.

Frequently asked questions

When is AfrikaBurn 2027?

AfrikaBurn 2027 runs from Monday, April 26 to Sunday, May 2, 2027, in the Tankwa Karoo, according to the official AfrikaBurn site. Gates open on the Monday and accept new arrivals until 7 p.m. on Friday, per Quaggapedia. The Clan usually burns on Saturday night and the Temple on Sunday, weather permitting.

Is AfrikaBurn a music festival?

No, by its own description. AfrikaBurn calls itself a self-organised creative art experiment rather than a music festival: participants build the theme camps, artworks, performances and mutant vehicles that make up Tankwa Town. Plenty of camps play music, yet the event runs on participation, gifting and its eleven guiding principles.

Can you bring kids to AfrikaBurn?

Yes, with clear rules. Quaggapedia's FAQ says anyone under 18 must be accompanied by an adult aged 28 or older, and each guardian may bring up to four kids or minors. Tickets for kids 13 and under are free at the gate, while minor tickets for ages 14 to 17 are bought online.

How far is AfrikaBurn from Cape Town?

About four to five hours by road. Quaggapedia's guide for international burners puts Cape Town International Airport roughly 4–5 hours' drive from Quaggafontein, the Tankwa Karoo farm where AfrikaBurn now takes place. The final stretch follows the R355, South Africa's longest gravel road, and the guide advises against relying on GPS.
