Rave Cloaks for Men: How to Choose a Hooded Festival Cloak

|Magus Fawn

The car doors slam, and the cold finds you before the music does.

It's 1 a.m. The venue glows at the far end of a gravel lot, the kick drum is already rolling across the dust, and the line at the gate is a row of breath clouds. Somewhere between the car and the wristband scan, every guy in your crew finds out whether he packed for the flyer or for the night.

You pull the hood up. It comes forward over your forehead, and the heavy drawstrings pull it snug. You zip the front, sink your hands into two deep pockets, and the faux-fur lining settles around your shoulders. By the time you reach the gate you're warm, a little mysterious, and grinning inside a wolf.

That walk is what a rave cloak for men is really for. Every part of the cloak gets its moment somewhere between the parking lot, the dance floor and the ride home.

We're Magus and Lylyth Fawn, visionary artists in Los Angeles. Magus makes VR and digital visionary art and produces Psy EDM; Lylyth makes fractal art and runs design and customer care. A question that keeps coming up in r/aves is some version of where a guy can find a good rave cloak, usually with a wish list attached: a hood deep enough to disappear into, pockets that hold real things, and something that won't cook him on the dance floor. Over in r/BurningMan, one burner-jacket thread asks for deep pockets and secret pockets in the same breath.

We draw our cloaks in 51 designs, so we've thought about this more than is probably healthy. Here's how we'd choose one, in the order a cold night tests it: the hood, the length, the shoulders, the pockets, the heat on the dance floor, what goes underneath and where the cloak rides when the sun comes up. Then the men's-versus-women's question, and where to buy.

What should a man look for in a rave cloak?

Look for a hood you can pull forward and cinch, a length that suits your height, room across the shoulders for a hoodie, a front that zips fully closed, and pockets that keep a phone and wallet secure. Every Magus Fawn men's cloak covers that list, with a faux-fur lining, heavy drawstrings, a double front zipper and four pockets.

Six checks, in the order you'll feel them:

Check What you want On a Magus Fawn cloak
Hood Deep enough to pull forward and cinch around your face Full hood with heavy drawstrings
Length Covers you on a cold curb, clears the stairs Unisex sizes XS–5XL; email your height for a length check
Shoulders Zips closed over a hoodie with your arms up Unisex fit; our FAQ suggests sizing up for layers
Closure Opens in a second, closes all the way Double front zipper
Pockets A secure home for phone, wallet and keys Four: a zippered and an open pocket inside, two deep side pockets
Lining Soft enough to wear with nothing underneath Ultra-soft fluffy microfiber fleece, black or white faux fur

For a first men's cloak, start with the newest design we make. Crimson Fenrir puts a jet-black wolf with red eyes on your back, surging out of blood-red smoke beneath a pale full moon. In Norse mythology, Fenrir is the monstrous wolf the gods tried to bind with three fetters (Wikipedia). Ours has slipped every one of them and stands guard instead, which is exactly the energy you want crossing a dark parking lot at 2 a.m. The Crimson Fenrir Wolf Men's Rave Zipper Cloak ($250) comes in XS–5XL (read the story behind it: The Ribbon and the Wolf).

How deep should a rave cloak hood be?

Product image of the Cosmic Knight men's cloak from the back, hood up and held open at a forest festival: an armored star guardian with a spoked halo, star medallions and folded wings etched in silver and pale teal on charcoal

Deep enough to come forward past your forehead and shade your face, with drawstrings to cinch it around your jaw on a windy walk. Every Magus Fawn cloak has a full hood with heavy drawstrings. We don't publish a hood measurement, so if hood depth is the deciding factor for you, email us before you order.

When guys ask for cloak recommendations, the hood comes up first, and they want it big: the kind you can vanish into when the strobes get loud. That wish is about more than style. The hood is the warmest thing you'll wear on the walk, because it covers your ears, your neck and the back of your head in one move, all the places a jacket collar leaves to the wind. Short hair and a buzz cut feel the night first.

In every cloak photo in this guide, the hood rises to a soft peak above the head, wizard style. To test any hood at home:

  1. Put on the beanie or cap you'll actually wear. A hood that fits bare hair can sit tight over a hat.
  2. Pull the hood up and cinch the drawstrings. It should close around your face without pulling at the zipper.
  3. Turn your head both ways. You want shade and privacy, and you still want to see your crew.

Cosmic Knight is a design that makes the most of a hood that goes up. A spoked halo crowns the shoulders, an armored figure rises down the spine through a chain of star medallions, and folded wings sweep toward the hem, all etched in silver and pale teal over charcoal, with a crescent moon resting on each shoulder. Hood up, you're the guardian at the gate. Wear it as the Cosmic Knight Men's Cloak ($250), XS–5XL (read the story behind it: Hold the Line).

How long should a men's festival cloak be?

Product image of the Temple of Horus men's festival cloak from the back, hood up at a festival stage: four sheer veined wings in gold, green and violet across swirling cobalt and violet, framed in temple filigree

Long enough to cover your hips and thighs when you sit on a cold curb, short enough to take stairs without a hand on the hem. Magus Fawn cloaks come in one unisex size run, XS to 5XL, so tall and compact guys alike should email their height and measurements for a length check.

Length is a trade, and both sides have their fans:

  • Longer means more of you under the lining at a sunrise set, when everyone is sitting in the dust watching the sky change.
  • Shorter means easy stairs, art-car ladders and bike rides. On a playa bike, gather the hem before you pedal.

Tyler, reviewing an Ophanim cloak in November 2025, put length in five words: "Very cozy, a little longer than expected." Read that as good news on a cold night, and as a reason to send your height if you're between sizes. Sizing up for layers can change the length as well as the width, so mention both in your email to art@magusfawn.com. We typically reply within 1–2 business days.

A long cloak loves a design that runs from hood to hem. Temple of Horus opens four sheer, veined wings in gold, green and violet across a back of swirling cobalt and violet, framed in ornate temple filigree: a falcon, a moth or a dragonfly at rest on the night sky. It honors the falcon-headed sky god whose restored eye stood for healing and protection in ancient Egypt (Eye of Horus). The Temple Of Horus Men's Festival Cloak ($250) is made for the trance stage and the paddle home, in XS–5XL (read the story behind it: The Eye Made Whole).

How should a rave cloak fit across the shoulders?

Product image of the Electric Dragonscape men's festival cloak from the back, hood up at a festival stage: a horned silver-white dragon with crystalline ice-blue, cobalt and white scales and violet-tipped wings

A rave cloak should zip closed over your thickest layer without pulling across the shoulders, and still let you throw both arms up when the drop hits. Magus Fawn cloaks have a unisex fit from XS to 5XL, and our FAQ suggests sizing up for outerwear, so broad shoulders or a heavy hoodie are reasons to round up.

The shoulders are where a men's cloak shows its fit. A cloak that feels roomy over a T-shirt in the bedroom mirror can feel snug over a hoodie in the venue line. Three quick tests in the mirror:

  • The zip test. Put on your warmest hoodie, then zip the cloak all the way. It should close without strain.
  • The drop test. Raise both arms overhead. The front should stay zipped while your hands go up.
  • The hug test. Wrap your arms around a friend. If the cloak pulls across your back, size up.
What you'll wear under it Size choice
A tank, a tee or nothing at all One size up, per our outerwear advice
A cotton hoodie One size up; two if your shoulders are broad
A hoodie plus a thermal Two sizes up, and email us your measurements

Square your shoulders in Electric Dragonscape and the dragon squares up with you. A horned dragon in silver-white rears across the back, its head and wings built from crystalline, electric scales in ice blue, cobalt and white, with violet-tipped wing blades fanning out over a glowing blue mandala. The Electric Dragonscape Dragon Print Men's Festival Cloak ($250), XS–5XL, is a natural for the riverside stage at midnight (read the story behind it: Let Her Have the Tube).

Where do guys keep their phone and wallet in a rave cloak?

Product image of the Golden Phoenix men's cloak from the back, hood up and held open at a dusty festival stage: gold filigree wings with teal, blue and violet plumage around a glowing green orb on black

Inside it. Every Magus Fawn cloak has two interior stash pockets, a vertical zippered pocket for secure storage and a horizontal pocket for easy access, plus two deep side pockets for your hands. Your phone and cards ride in the zippered pocket inside the cloak, out of sight of the crowd.

When burners describe their dream jacket, they ask for secret pockets and deep pockets in the same breath. A zippered pocket on the inside of a cloak is about as secret as a pocket gets: it stays with you when the cloak hangs open, and nobody in the crowd can see it.

The two inside pockets do different jobs. The vertical one zips shut, so it's the vault for the things you can't lose. The horizontal one stays open for quick grabs, like earplugs between sets. Our cloak buyer's guide has the full pocket-by-pocket map.

Golden Phoenix is the cloak for anyone who carries the whole kit to the sunrise set. The phoenix wakes in gold filigree, its crest raised over a glowing green orb at the center of the back, while teal and blue plumage cascades down each sleeve and darkens to violet, and a stack of jeweled medallions leads to temple spires at the hem. A bird that rises with the sun, made for the frosty walk to morning coffee. The Golden Phoenix Men's Cloak ($250) comes in XS–5XL (read the story behind it: Land Here).

Will a rave cloak be too hot for dancing?

Product image of the Void Mandala men's festival cloak from the back, hood up at a sunny festival stage: silver-grey mandalas of every size tiled across charcoal and black from hood to hem

Only if you keep it zipped. A Magus Fawn cloak is a faux-fur-lined warmth layer, and the double front zipper sets the temperature: open it on the dance floor, push the hood back while you move, and zip up the minute you step away. For hot summer nights, a sleeveless hoodie or a tank is the lighter call.

We see the requests for a lightweight, breathable rave cloak for men, and we understand the appeal. Our answer is a different one: every cloak we make shares the same faux-fur-lined build, because a cloak's job is the cold half of the night. The listed fabric weight is 200 g/m², lighter on paper than the cotton hoodie we'd layer under it. What makes it the warm layer is the build: a soft lining, a full hood and a front that zips all the way closed.

The swing between day and night is the whole reason to own one layer you can open and close. Burning Man's own FAQ says daytime temperatures "have been known to exceed 100 degrees," while pre-dawn temperatures can drop close to 32°F (Burning Man FAQ). Our guide to how cold Burning Man gets at night covers that desert in detail.

How the veterans run the heat:

  • On the floor: zip open, hood down, cloak hanging off the shoulders like a cape.
  • Between sets: half-zip on the walk to the next stage.
  • The minute the music stops: zip up and hood up while you're still warm from dancing. Heat is easier to keep than to win back.

If your festival nights stay warm until sunrise, start with a hooded tank instead; our sleeveless hoodie guide covers those.

For the guy who runs warm and dresses dark, Void Mandala tiles mandalas fine as lace doilies, silver-grey across charcoal and black from hood to hem. From the bar it reads as a long dark silhouette; up close the detail radiates endlessly from each center. Wear it open over a black tank and it's techno-monk energy all night. The Void Mandala Men's Festival Cloak ($250), XS–5XL, is built for a black-only dress code and a trance sunrise over a misty field.

What do guys wear under a rave cloak?

Product image of the Mechanical Kraken cotton unisex pullover hoodie worn by a man at a festival: a silver, teal and lavender biomechanical kraken on the front and violet jellyfish down the sleeves on dark navy

Anything from bare skin to a full hoodie. A Magus Fawn cloak is lined with ultra-soft, fluffy microfiber fleece, so going shirtless under an open cloak is a classic festival look. Add a tank or tee for a cool night, then a cotton hoodie and joggers when the temperature drops. Size the cloak up for thicker layers.

The night Under the cloak How you wear the cloak
Warm, main stage Shirtless or a tank, shorts or lantern pants Open, hood down
Cool, forest or beach Tee or long sleeve, joggers Half-zipped, hood ready
Cold, desert or winter rave Cotton hoodie, joggers, beanie Zipped, hood up on every walk

Going shirtless? The lining sits soft against bare skin, and when the set ends you just zip up. After a dusty weekend, our festival cloak washing guide gets the playa out of the lining. For full looks built around the genre you're dancing to, see what guys wear to raves.

For the cold-night layer, we'd put a cotton hoodie under the cloak. Mechanical Kraken asks what would happen if an engineer drew the deep: a silver, teal and lavender biomechanical kraken curls up the front, its tentacles wrapped in engineered plating, while violet jellyfish drift down the sleeves on dark navy. The kraken is the giant sea creature of Norwegian legend (Wikipedia); ours came out of a machine shop. The Cotton Unisex Pullover Hoodie | Mechanical Kraken ($100) is 100% cotton at 310 g/m², with a kangaroo pocket, a drawstring hood and a relaxed regular fit in XS–6XL. Cotton shrinks 3–5% after the first wash, so wash it cold and air dry it.

How do you carry a rave cloak when it gets warm?

Tie it on, strap it on, or leave it at camp. A Magus Fawn cloak has sleeves, so you can knot them around your waist and let the art hang behind you, or roll the cloak and strap it to your pack. At indoor raves, wear it through the line and hand it in at coat check.

The sun comes up, the afters get hot, and suddenly you're holding the warmest thing you own. Your options:

  • Around the waist. Knot the sleeves at the front and the back panel becomes a kilt of art. Move your phone and wallet to your pants first.
  • Cape mode. Leave it unzipped over your shoulders, hood down. It's the easiest switch back when the wind picks up.
  • On the pack. Roll it tight, hood tucked in, and strap it under the top of your backpack.
  • Back at camp. Leave it on your chair, folded with the lining in so the dust stays outside, ready for the sunset walk.
  • At coat check. Indoors, the cloak earns its keep in the line, then waits for you. Our indoor rave guide covers coat check and rooms without one.

And the most festival option of all: lend it. Somebody at camp always trusts the afternoon sun a little too much. A cloak around their shoulders at 4 a.m. is about as good a gift as the night offers.

Can men wear a women's festival cloak?

Yes. Of our 183 cloak listings, 85 are labeled men's and 88 women's, and they're the same cloak: one Magus Fawn build in one unisex fit, XS to 5XL. If the colorway you love sits under women's, order it in the size you'd choose for any of our cloaks and wear it proudly.

The other 10 listings carry no men's or women's label at all (counted October 2026). Across our 51 cloak designs, 43 come with both a men's and a women's listing, and a handful appear under only one label. Cosmic Knight, for example, is listed only as a men's cloak. Every one of the 183 is $250, in XS–5XL, with the same micro-mink outer, faux-fur fleece lining, double front zipper, heavy drawstrings and four pockets.

So the label tells you where a cloak lives in the shop, and the artwork and colorway are the real choice. Two people can wear the same design from both sides of the catalog: one cloak, twice.

Where can you buy a good rave cloak for men?

Buy from a maker whose listing states the lining, the closure, the pocket count and the size range, because those four decide how a cloak feels at 3 a.m. Magus Fawn makes faux-fur-lined zip cloaks for men to order in XS–5XL, sold at magusfawn.com, with 144 reviews on our Etsy shop and 7–11 business days of production before shipping.

Those four details are rarer than you'd think. When we compared 50 hooded cloak listings from 45 sellers, only 3 stated a full-length front zipper (the full data is in our festival cloak study). Festival vendor markets are worth a browse too, because there you can pull a hood up and test a zipper in person.

Buying from us works like this:

  • Made to order. Production takes 7–11 business days, then delivery takes 6–14 business days. Our made-to-order timing guide has order-by dates for 2027 festivals.
  • Shipping. Free in the US on orders of $70 or more, which covers any cloak.
  • Sizing help. All sales are final, so email your height and measurements to art@magusfawn.com before you order. We typically reply within 1–2 business days.
  • Reviews. Our Etsy shop, MagusFawn, has been open since 2020 and averages 4.7★ (October 2026).

Wondering whether a $250 cloak earns its price? Our cloak buyer's guide runs the cost-per-wear math.

That walk from the car to the gate is coming around again soon. Pick the wolf, the knight, the dragon or the phoenix, pull the hood up, and let the cold be the part of the night you look forward to.

Frequently asked questions

Are rave cloaks good for Burning Man?

Yes, for the nights. Burning Man's own FAQ notes that pre-dawn temperatures on the playa can drop close to 32°F after days that can pass 100 degrees. A Magus Fawn cloak zips fully closed, has a full hood and a faux-fur fleece lining, and opens in a second when the sun comes back up.

Do Magus Fawn cloaks fit big and tall men?

Magus Fawn cloaks come in a unisex fit from XS to 5XL, and our FAQ suggests sizing up for outerwear, sometimes by two sizes for layers. We don't publish separate tall sizes, so tall or broad-shouldered men should email their height and measurements to art@magusfawn.com for a fit check before ordering.

Should a guy choose a black or white faux-fur lining?

Choose by the look you want. Every Magus Fawn cloak offers the faux-fur lining in black or white at the same price. Black keeps the whole silhouette dark from hood to hem, which suits techno and all-black dress codes. White glows inside the hood and frames your face, a brighter look for sunrise sets.

Can you wear a rave cloak to an indoor rave?

Yes, and it's at its best in the line outside. Wear your Magus Fawn cloak for the cold walk and the wait at the door, then hand it in at coat check or wear it open if the room runs cool. Move your phone and wallet to your pants before you check it.

Is a rave cloak a good gift for a guy?

Yes, if his nights run late. A Magus Fawn cloak is the complete cold-night layer: full hood with heavy drawstrings, faux-fur fleece lining, double front zipper and four pockets, in a unisex fit from XS to 5XL. Every cloak is made to order and all sales are final, so confirm his size first.
