A dragon rides between a stranger's shoulder blades, cobalt scales glinting through the haze, while two bare arms above it conduct the bassline.
The air on the desert dance floor has gone gold with dust, and the crowd answers the way veterans do: hoods up, drawstrings snug, sunglasses down, and not one person stops dancing. The arms stay free. The art stays on show.
That's the whole case for a sleeveless hoodie. It keeps the most useful part of a hoodie, the hood, and hands the sleeves back to the sky, so you can dance through a hot afternoon with shelter ready the second the playa starts drifting.
We're Magus and Lylyth Fawn, Los Angeles visionary artists; the prints on our sleeveless shelf began as our own digital art. Here's what to call the garment, why it thrives in heat and dust, how to keep the hood up, and how to wear it under a cloak at night.
Is a sleeveless hoodie the same as a hooded vest?
Yes, in American shops they're the same garment under different names: a sleeveless hoodie, a hooded tank top, a hoodie vest or a hooded vest. Magus Fawn uses "sleeveless hoodie" and "hooded tank" for one cut: a pullover body, a hood and open armholes. Across the Atlantic, "vest" means something quite different.
Wikipedia's sleeveless shirt entry says "In the UK, especially when used as an undershirt, it is known as a vest," while "In the United States and Canada, any casual sleeveless shirt can be called tank top."
The hood itself started out in the cold. Wikipedia's hoodie history traces the hooded pullover to the 1930s in the US, "for workers in cold New York warehouses." Lose the sleeves and it's ready for a desert stage.
Our sleeveless category holds 57 listings: 24 cotton hooded tanks, 22 jersey sleeveless hoodies, and 11 sleeveless bodysuits for anyone who wants the bare arms without the hood. The two hooded builds compare like this, from each product page:
| Build | Fabric on the tag | Pocket and hood | Sizes on the menu | Price |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Cotton hooded tank | 100% cotton, 310 g/m² | Front kangaroo hand pocket, drawstring hood | XS–5XL, regular fit | $80 |
| Jersey sleeveless hoodie | 95% poly / 5% spandex jersey, 180 g/m² | Hood, no pocket listed | S–2XL, regular fit | $75 |
Built for heat: what happens when the sleeves come off
We think about festival heat in two places: under the arms and across the back of the neck. A sleeveless hoodie leaves the first open to the breeze and puts a hood within reach of the second. The cotton tank listing calls the fabric "Ultra-soft and breathable" and pitches it for "warm-weather layering without the bulk of sleeves."

The Mechanical Kraken jersey sleeveless hoodie ($75) shows the open armhole running well down the ribs, so your sides meet whatever breeze the field offers. Its silver kraken stares out with glowing teal eyes, tentacles coiling down over a spired city from the deep, while jellyfish and a seashell drift along one side and teal light flickers at the hem. Born in sailors' legends, the kraken stands guard here, and the 180 g/m² jersey is our lightest hooded build, S–2XL (its desert-rave story is Tide's Out).

For cotton in the heat, the Crystal Shroom Kingdom cotton hooded tank ($80) builds a citadel up the spine: violet mushroom-capped towers stacking toward a glowing teal archway, with bronze and teal scrollwork curling over both shoulder blades on deep navy. A fairy-tale kingdom, made for a forest stage. It's 100% cotton at 310 g/m² with a kangaroo pocket and drawstring, XS–5XL on the size menu.
Bare shoulders call for sunscreen, applied the American Academy of Dermatology's way; for the rest of the heat playbook, see How to Stay Cool at a Summer Festival.
Built for dust: the hood is the first move
Dust arrives fast at desert festivals, and the hood is the one piece of shelter you're already wearing. Burning Man's official Survival Guide puts it vividly: "Dust storms prowl the playa and can produce instant whiteouts."
Its advice for anyone caught out in the open is simple: "sit down, turn your back to the wind, cover your face, and wait it out." Its packing list includes "Goggles to protect eyes during dust storms." The goggles and a mask handle your face. A hood, pulled up and cinched, takes the hair, ears and the back of the neck. Our festival hats guide covers the brim side of the dust kit, and our women's Burning Man guide has the hair routine.

The dragon from our opening is the Electric Dragonscape jersey sleeveless hoodie ($75): a horned silver-white dragon faces out from the back, a glowing blue jewel set at its chest and cobalt flames licking up both sides. Jersey, 95% poly / 5% spandex at 180 g/m², regular fit, S–2XL (read its river-festival story: Let Her Have the Tube).

On the front of the Solar Eclipse jersey sleeveless hoodie ($75), three black suns flare gold at their rims in a triangle, circling a Flower of Life caught in a golden spiral, with petals of teal, coral and copper fanning toward the hem on black. An eclipse turns day into dusk for a few minutes, and the art carries that hush into a bright afternoon. Same 180 g/m² jersey, S–2XL. Scott left this review on its page in June 2026: "Item came as described and packaged well. Great addition to my festival clothing. Highly recommended seller!"
How do you keep a hood up while you dance?
Cinch the drawstring until the hood sits snug at your temples, then tie a bow rather than a knot so it releases in one pull. A low bun or braid at the nape gives the hood something to hold. For the strongest grip, wear a cap underneath: the brim keeps the hood's front edge forward.
Two more habits:
- Sunglasses go on after the hood. The arms then hold the hood's edge against your head.
- Hood down between sets. Let your head breathe on the walk to the next stage, and pull it back up when the music or the wind returns.

The Temple of Sound cotton hooded tank ($80) is our ode to the speaker stack. On the back, a figure sits cross-legged in meditation before a Flower of Life, guarded on both sides by towers of black speaker cones, with a violet glow pooling at the hem in lavender, violet and smoke-grey. It's 100% cotton at 310 g/m², with a kangaroo pocket, XS–5XL on the size menu.

The photo of the Golden Phoenix jersey sleeveless hoodie ($75) shows drawstrings on the jersey build too, hanging over the art. Gold, teal and violet wings spread wide from a glowing green-and-gold medallion at the chest, with temple spires rising beneath them on black. Myth's firebird burns down and returns brighter, a fitting crest for the dancer still going at the last set. Jersey at 180 g/m², S–2XL.
The night shift: a cloak over the hooded tank
At sunset, the hooded tank becomes the night's base layer. For Black Rock City, Burning Man's Survival Guide notes that "Overnight lows can be in the 40s," so the cloak goes on over the tank you've worn all day.
Bare arms feel wonderful inside a faux-fur lining, and when the tent warms up, the cloak swings off over a finished outfit.

The Lucid men's festival cloak ($250) swirls liquid rainbow color, violet, magenta, lime, tangerine and cobalt, into eddies that curl like paint stirred in water, the colors of a dream you remember on waking. It has a micro-mink poly outer, a faux-fur lining in black or white, a double front zipper and four pockets, in a unisex fit, XS–5XL. Size the cloak generously; for outerwear our FAQ says size up, "sometimes even 2 sizes up to fit extra layers under." (Its story is The Stage in the Cedars.) Which hood goes on top when you wear a cloak over a sleeveless hoodie?
The tank's hood goes on first, pulled up and cinched; the cloak's hood goes over it. Think of the inner hood as the one holding your hair, ears and dust, and the outer hood as the windbreak. At the stage, drop the cloak's hood and keep the tank's hood up, so your art and your warmth both stay put.

Our favorite inner hood is the Cosmic Knight cotton hooded tank ($80). A robed knight in layered armor stands down the front, a crescent-topped staff in one hand and a glowing orb in the other, while star-compass rosettes fan out around the shoulders in slate blue and silver on midnight navy. 100% cotton, 310 g/m², kangaroo pocket and drawstring, XS–5XL on the size menu.
Sizes, care and timing
- Two size ranges. Cotton hooded tanks run XS–5XL on the size menu and jersey sleeveless hoodies S–2XL, both regular fit; our guide to festival shirts for men compares the two builds.
- Cotton settles a little. The cotton tank pages note "an estimated 3-5% shrinkage after the first wash"; if you're between two sizes, the larger one leaves room for that.
- Sewn after your order lands. Each tank goes into production once you order: 7–11 business days to print and sew, then 6–14 in the courier's hands, so order a good six weeks before your gate.
- One tank ships free. US shipping is free at $70+, and every hooded tank here clears that line alone.
- Final sale, full support. Every sale is final, so send your chest measurement to art@magusfawn.com before you choose.
For the wider family, our psychedelic hoodies guide shops by art style, and our rave tops guide covers crop tops and tanks without hoods.
The dust will lift, the gold will drain out of the sky, and the dragon will still be dancing. Pick the art you'd like riding on your back, and let your arms do the rest.

Frequently asked questions
Do sleeveless hoodies have pockets?
Some do. Magus Fawn's cotton hooded tanks have a front kangaroo hand pocket, our usual home for earplugs and lip balm, along with a drawstring hood. Our jersey sleeveless hoodies list no pocket, so pair one with cargo shorts or a hip pack and keep the hoodie itself as light as possible.
Why is it called a tank top?
The name comes from swimming. Wikipedia's sleeveless shirt entry says the tank top "is named after tank suits, one-piece bathing suits of the 1920s worn in tanks or swimming pools." Pools were once called tanks, and the sleeveless cut of those suits handed its name to the tank top, hooded versions included.
Where should you put sunscreen when you wear a sleeveless hoodie?
Cover all the skin the tank leaves bare: shoulders, arms, upper back, the sides of your ribs at the armholes, and your neck. The American Academy of Dermatology's sunscreen guide says "Remember your neck, face, ears," and to reapply "every two hours, and immediately after swimming or sweating."
