Music Festivals in New York 2027: Island Bass, Catskill Hayfields and Finger Lakes Dance Tents

|Magus Fawn

For a lot of people, festivals in New York means one weekend in Queens. The state's season runs far longer than that. It opens on Memorial Day weekend in Lake George, where all the dance floors are indoors, and closes in September on an island in the East River.

The farms fill the middle: a swimming pond in Chautauqua County, a mown hayfield in the northern Catskills, a fairground dance tent near Cayuga Lake.

Upstate, the nights run cooler: Albany's July low averages 62.4°F, almost eight degrees under Central Park's.

We checked all eight festivals below on their official websites on October 30, 2026; four have posted 2027 dates.

The New York lineup: four dates set, four still TBA

New York's 2027 festival calendar starts with FETE ADK in Lake George (May 28–29), then the Great Blue Heron (July 1–4), Grey Fox (July 14–18) and Finger Lakes GrassRoots (July 22–25). Governors Ball, Moon Bloom, Borderland and Experts Only are still TBA.

Grey Fox Bluegrass Festival Walsh Farm, Oak Hill July 14–18 62.4°F (Albany, July) greyfoxbluegrass.com

Borderland Music & Arts Festival Knox Farm State Park, East Aurora TBA (2026: September 18–20) 52.6°F (Albany, September) borderlandfestival.com
Experts Only Randall's Island Park TBA (2026: September 19–20) 62.3°F (Central Park, September) expertsonlyfest.com

Central Park covers the city rows and Albany's airport the upstate ones; for Sherman and East Aurora, far west near Lake Erie, treat Albany as a rough guide. Every month is laid out in our 2027 festival calendar.

Dance music: a Lake George weekend and an island in the East River

FETE ADK: Memorial Day weekend on Lake George's indoor stages (May 28–29)

FETE ADK, pronounced "fate" and also known as the Lake George DJ Takeover, books May 28–29, 2027 across venues in Lake George village. The posted hours run 6 p.m. to 3 a.m. Friday and noon to 3 a.m. Saturday, with house, trance and dubstep in several themed music areas. Its FAQ says every stage is indoors and every location is 21+.

Outfit note: the dancing stays inside; May air near 48°F waits on the sidewalks of the village. Velvet in the rooms, the cloak outdoors.

Experts Only: John Summit's Randall's Island weekend (2027 dates TBA)

John Summit's Experts Only followed a sold-out 2025 debut with a second Randall's Island edition on September 19–20, 2026, running 3 to 10 p.m. each day, with GRiZ, Max Styler, Adam Ten and SUBJOHNICS, Summit's back-to-back set with Subtronics. Its FAQ lists an 18+ door, rain-or-shine running and no re-entry.

Outfit note: once inside, you stay, so wear the whole evening: ID and phone in a cloak's deep pockets, the cloak itself for the walk off the island. The Brooklyn club side, from Pacha New York to the warehouse parties, lives in our Northeast festival guide.

Farms and fairgrounds upstate

Moon Bloom: workshops and live painting at Magic Forest Farm (2027 dates TBA)

Moon Bloom's first edition was set for June 26–28, 2026, according to NYS Music, at Magic Forest Farm, 225 forested acres in Coeymans Hollow, south of Albany. The festival site puts Thacher Park in view behind the main stage. In 2026, weekend passes included tent camping, over 30 music artists, live painters, a kids' zone and more than 50 workshops. No 2027 dates yet.

Outfit note: soft layers for the workshops, a hooded cloak for June's 57°F nights.

Great Blue Heron: a swimming pond and drum circles in Sherman (July 1–4)

The Great Blue Heron Music Festival returns to its farm in Sherman, in Chautauqua County, on July 1–4, 2027. The 2026 lineup counted 48 artists on four stages, with Ripe, Moontricks and Big Something among the first-timers. Walk-in woods camping comes with weekend tickets, and the farm adds a lifeguarded swimming beach and late-night drum circles by the fire.

Outfit note: swim by day, drum by night. Stretchy leggings handle the trails; the cloak handles the circle.

Grey Fox: bluegrass and newgrass on the Walsh Farm (July 14–18)

Grey Fox brings bluegrass, newgrass and roots music to the Walsh Farm in Oak Hill on July 14–18, 2027. Its camping page (2025 edition) opens flat, freshly mown hayfields from 7 a.m. Wednesday to 5 p.m. Sunday, and the 4,000 camping tickets normally sell out. Under-13s enter free beside a ticketed parent.

Outfit note: the camping rules ban open flames, so the warmth after dark has to be something you wear.

Finger Lakes GrassRoots: the 35th year in Trumansburg (July 22–25)

The Finger Lakes GrassRoots Festival of Music & Dance marks its 35th year on July 22–25, 2027 at the Trumansburg Fairgrounds, with early-bird tickets already out. The festival counts four days, four stages and 70 bands, with the Infield Stage and a Dance Tent among them. A wristband lets you come and go all weekend, and Culture Camp fills the four days before, July 18–21.

Outfit note: dress to move: bright leggings and a cap against the noon glare, a hood once the July air cools.

City-size weekends: Queens in June, a Buffalo-area park in September

Governors Ball: Flushing Meadows in early June (2027 dates TBA)

Governors Ball took over Flushing Meadows Corona Park on June 5–7, 2026, with 60+ artists on three stages. Bag rules, transit and the park itself are in our Governors Ball outfit guide.

Outfit note: a snapback and tee for the afternoon, one layer for a June evening near 64°F.

Borderland: three stages in Knox Farm State Park (2027 dates TBA)

Borderland filled Knox Farm State Park in East Aurora, about 15 minutes from Buffalo, on September 18–20, 2026. The 600-acre park of rolling hills and barns holds three stages of indie rock, roots, jam, folk and Americana, plus Artisan Alley for local makers. Its 2026 FAQ admitted kids 10 and younger at no charge alongside a GA ticket holder.

Outfit note: September upstate means a 52.6°F normal low at Albany. Bring the cloak for Saturday night's headliner.

Seven to ten degrees between the city and upstate

NOAA's 1991–2020 normals put Central Park's summer nights between the mid-60s and 70°F and Albany's near 60°F. From May through September, Albany's average low runs seven to ten degrees under the city's, widest in September.

Sacred geometry and stage neon for New York nights

Five pieces in city black, silver and electric color, led by two cloaks for weekends that run past sundown.

Long-haired man in aviators and layered pendant necklaces, hood up, the Black Mystic Eye men's festival cloak hanging open over a black tee: white Flower of Life lattice bands and medallions on black with grey shading

Flower of Life for a black-clad city. The Black Mystic Eye men's festival cloak ($250) fits a city night best: white lattice from the overlapping-circle grid runs in bands down the front and around the sleeves, with full Flower of Life medallions at the shoulders and along the sleeves and soft grey shading in the black between them. The back, not shown here, sets an open eye with blade-like silver wings under the hood, above a column of three medallions.

Print aside, the pair match exactly, pockets first: two roomy hip pockets and two inside, one zipped. A two-way zipper frees the knees while the collar stays shut, the hood tightens on cords, and black or white faux fur lines micro-mink polyester weighing 200 g/m². Unisex fit, XS–5XL.

Woman with locs, some in a high bun, and violet round sunglasses holding the Cyberpunk Mech women's cloak open on its black lining over a violet bodysuit, silver necklaces and fishnets: electric blue, purple, turquoise and pink machinery, white circles

Neon for the island. The Cyberpunk Mech women's cloak ($250) turns a robot's insides out in electric blue, purple and turquoise, with pink at the cuffs and white lattice medallions down the sleeves. Held open, as in our photo, it frames a violet bodysuit and a stack of silver necklaces: our pick for Experts Only or FETE ADK.

Man with tousled hair and patterned-frame sunglasses, a festival stage behind him, wearing the Void Mandala crushed velvet t-shirt: grey mandala rosettes, crisp and hazy, on black, with beaded bracelets and black trousers

Frost on a night window. The Void Mandala crushed velvet t-shirt ($60) spreads grey rosettes across black, sharp in places and melting away in others. Crushed velvet (240 g/m²) catches light in its creases; for a July farm, the design also comes in 190 g/m² cotton ($60) or 180 g/m² poly jersey ($50). XS–5XL. Our rooftop story Two Kicks In, Four Kicks Out takes this design family to a blacked-out New York rooftop.

Man with dreadlocks and mirrored aviators on a sunny, dusty field wearing Liquified Abyss men's festival leggings: magenta, orange, cobalt, violet, teal and yellow marbling, with a black geometric tee and brown lace-up boots

Neon marbling for the Dance Tent. The Liquified Abyss men's festival leggings ($65) pour magenta, orange, cobalt, violet and teal into one another with streaks of yellow, like inks floated on a marbling tray. They hug the leg in 90/10 polyester-spandex, XS–3XL. They carry a GrassRoots day from the opening act to the last encore.

Woman with long hair, thin braids and glitter on her cheek, seen in profile wearing the Galactic Alien Oracle snapback hat: violet, lavender and indigo filigree with silver-white highlights and a fine grid under the dark brim

Violet filigree for the afternoon. The Galactic Alien Oracle snapback ($40) curls violet, lavender and indigo shapes edged in silver-white over the crown, and a lattice of tiny circles lines the dark underbrim. Adjustable, one size: shade for Governors Ball or the Grey Fox field at noon.

Grey Fox's no-flame rule and the hooded blanket

Grey Fox allows no campfires, and Albany's July normal low of 62.4°F hints at how Heron and GrassRoots tents feel at first light. At dawn, reach for our hooded blanket ($150): one big 4XL pullover in heavy fleece (300 g/m², polyester), cat ears on top, a short neck zip and a pocket as wide as a muff.

Frequently asked questions

How do Experts Only's digital GA tickets work?

In 2026, general admission tickets arrived by email as NFC passes from WRSTBND rather than wristbands. Add yours to Apple Wallet or Google Pay before you reach Randall's Island, as the FAQ recommends, and bring a government-issued ID; the 2026 festival was 18+. VIP and Platinum holders received wristbands by mail. 2027 dates are TBA.

What is there to do at the Great Blue Heron besides music?

Plenty. The festival's activity guide lists a lifeguarded swimming beach on the pond, 400 acres of trails, a Kids Tent for ages 10 and under, a Teen Tent, the Slyboots Circus big top, open music jams and late-night drum circles by the fire. Heron's 2027 dates are July 1–4 in Sherman, and weekend tickets include walk-in camping.

How do Grey Fox campers cook without a campfire?

With propane or charcoal. Grey Fox's New York State Department of Health campground permit requires a no-open-flame policy, so wood-fired cookers, fire pits, tiki torches and luminaries stay home, and the Campers Creed asks you to keep a fire extinguisher handy. Tents and campers sit at least 10 feet apart. Grey Fox returns July 14–18, 2027.

Is FETE ADK the same as the Lake George DJ Takeover?

Yes. The official site says FETE ADK, pronounced "fate", is also known as the Lake George DJ Takeover, a US Veteran-owned dance music event. The 2027 edition is May 28–29 on Memorial Day weekend, with every stage indoors and every location 21+. Venues and ticket details are due in early 2027.
