Ask someone from Michigan where their festival is, and they may raise a right hand, palm out, and tap a spot on it. The mitten holds a lot of music: techno on the Detroit River, forest stages in Rothbury, folk and roots on a farm near the top of the Lower Peninsula, and free jazz downtown every Labor Day.
Four Great Lakes touch the state and shape its nights. We design our cloaks in Los Angeles for nights like these. Every date below was checked on each festival's website on October 30, 2026.
Michigan's 2027 festival dates, January to September
The calendar opens in January: the Ann Arbor Folk Fest (January 29–30) leads Movement in Detroit (May 29–31), Blissfest near Harbor Springs (July 9–11) and the Detroit Jazz Festival (September 3–6), the four Michigan festivals with confirmed 2027 dates. Big Fam has named September; Electric Forest, Wheatland and Hiawatha still show 2026.

Two airports supply the lows, both NOAA 1991–2020 monthly normals: Detroit Metro for the southeast, Traverse City for the rest; Marquette, up on Lake Superior, is a long reach from either. Ohio and its neighbors are covered in our Midwest roundup, and the other months in our 2027 calendar with night lows.
Hart Plaza, twice: techno in May, jazz on Labor Day
Movement: three days of techno on the riverfront (May 29–31)
Movement returns to Hart Plaza for Memorial Day weekend, Saturday, May 29 through Monday, May 31, 2027. Three-day passes are already selling, and a payment plan starts general admission at $55 down.
Outfit note: Detroit's May normal low is 50.2°F. Our Movement guide covers the crowd's black-leaning style, and a deep blue cloak fits right in.
Detroit Jazz Festival: free, four days, all in the plaza (September 3–6)
The Detroit Jazz Festival calls itself "the world's largest free Jazz festival," and its 2027 edition runs September 3–6, over Labor Day weekend. In 2026 it moved every stage into Hart Plaza.
Outfit note: 2026's weekend days ran 12:30 to 11 p.m.: sleeveless for the afternoon, something hooded once September's 55.5°F evening arrives.
Pines, farms and a bayou: Michigan's camping weekends
Electric Forest: a 1930s dude ranch in Rothbury (2027 dates TBA)
Electric Forest lists only its 2026 weekend, June 25–28. Its host, the Double JJ Resort, opened as the Jack and Jill Ranch in 1937 beside spring-fed Big Wildcat Lake, and the resort calls itself "the biggest western style dude ranch east of the Mississippi."
Outfit note: June nights around Traverse City average 54.1°F. For thunderstorm-ready looks, see what to wear to Electric Forest; a green cloak blends into the woods after dark.
Blissfest: folk, world and roots on a 200-acre farm (July 9–11)
Blissfest fills its 200-acre Festival Farm outside Cross Village on July 9–11, 2027, with more than 125 acts across 11 programming areas. The first Blissfest, more than 40 years ago, lasted a single day beneath one big maple on fallow potato land. The 2026 FAQ capped weekend wristbands at 4,500.
Outfit note: Lake Michigan's breeze reaches the lawn, and July nights near Traverse City average 59.4°F, so pair a sleeveless top by day with a cloak after dark. Our story The Last Night Shift follows a festival medic through a shift on a Lake Michigan beach.
Wheatland Music Festival: traditional music in Remus (2027 dates TBA)
The Wheatland Music Organization preserves traditional music and arts, and its 53rd annual festival ran September 11–13, 2026, with camping included in the ticket. No 2027 festival date yet, but its one-day Winter Wheat event is set for January 9, 2027, at The Intersection in Grand Rapids.
Outfit note: Traverse City's September nights average 51.6°F; leggings under a cloak keep you at the stage for the final tune.
Big Fam Music & Arts Festival: a woodland bayou in Brooklyn (September 2027)
Big Fam is a multi-genre camping weekend at The Groves of Michigan in Brooklyn; its homepage says September 2027, with early-bird passes on sale.
Outfit note: September evenings in the southeast average 55.5°F. Go bright enough to stand out against the projections.
A January hall and a Lake Superior park
Ann Arbor Folk Fest: the 50th, at Hill Auditorium (January 29–30)
The Ann Arbor Folk Fest stages its 50th edition on January 29–30, 2027, at Hill Auditorium, with Jeff Daniels hosting both 7 p.m. shows. It's the biggest annual fundraiser for The Ark, the Ann Arbor nonprofit devoted to folk and roots music.
Outfit note: Detroit's January normals are 32.3°F by day and 19.2°F at night. Keep the cloak on from the car to your seat, then fold it over your knees when the lights go down.
Hiawatha Traditional Music Festival: Marquette's July weekend (2027 dates TBA)
The Hiawatha festival calls itself "the only event of its size and scope in Michigan's Upper Peninsula." It's held the next-to-last full weekend of July at Tourist Park in Marquette, with bluegrass, old-time, Cajun, Celtic, acoustic blues and folk. Friday opens with a ceremony called Thunderation!, and a children's parade comes late Sunday.
Outfit note: Lake Superior evenings run cooler than our Traverse City figure: pack a hood.
How far do Michigan festival nights drop, month by month?
A Michigan festival night can sit at 17°F or 64°F, depending on the month and how far north you camp. NOAA's 1991–2020 normals give Detroit Metro a 50.2°F low in May and 64.4°F in July, and Traverse City stays 4.5 to 6.8 degrees colder from May through August, so northern campers keep a hood close all summer.
| Month | Detroit Metro high / low | Traverse City high / low |
|---|---|---|
| January | 32.3°F / 19.2°F | 29.3°F / 17.0°F |
| May | 70.3°F / 50.2°F | 67.2°F / 43.4°F |
| June | 79.7°F / 60.2°F | 77.1°F / 54.1°F |
| July | 83.7°F / 64.4°F | 81.3°F / 59.4°F |
| August | 81.4°F / 63.2°F | 79.6°F / 58.7°F |
| September | 74.4°F / 55.5°F | 72.1°F / 51.6°F |

Packing in Great Lakes blue and forest green
Michigan dresses in lake water and pine, so everything below lives between blue and green, starting with a cloak in each.

White pines and deep water. The Cosmic Cross Green men's festival cloak ($250) draws bright green line, thick as pine boughs, over diamonds of deep blue and violet, and from behind the two halves meet at the spine like a leaf folded along its vein. Our pick for Electric Forest and Big Fam, where green belongs among trees.

Lake ice, with a dragon. The Electric Dragonscape women's festival cloak ($250) sweeps ice blue, cobalt and indigo down the front in feathered strokes, like bay ice catching light, with silver dragon details on one sleeve. The listing's back photos show a horned, gray-scaled dragon with amber eyes. Wear it to Movement or on a Wheatland night.
One build sits under both prints: micro-mink polyester outside at a listed 200 g/m², a single faux-fur lining in black or white, a drawstring hood, a front zipper that opens from top or hem, and four pockets, two at the hips and two inside, one zipped. Unisex, XS–5XL.

Lime into lake blue. The Psy Swirl Blue women's crushed velvet crop hoodie ($75) starts lime green at the shoulders and cools to turquoise and sky blue at the hem, spirals drawn over both. Crushed velvet, 240 g/m², S–2XL; zip either cloak over it after sunset.

Spirals for a sunny afternoon. The Blue Feathery Fractal men's sleeveless hoodie ($75) whirls violet and indigo spirals across teal green, centered on a dark teal diamond at the chest. Its 180 g/m² jersey is light enough for a Blissfest afternoon or a Labor Day set in Hart Plaza, in S–2XL. Colleen gave a Feathery Fractal bucket hat as a gift in August 2023 and wrote: "Made a great gift. He loved it !"

Pine shade, waist to ankle. The Forest Wizard green yoga leggings ($70) set a tuft of lime moss at one hip and pale, leaf-edged shapes across both thighs over deep green that darkens to charcoal, with a gold sunburst at each knee. Four-way-stretch microfiber, 225 g/m², raised waistband, XS–XL.

A cap for Hill Auditorium. The Green Fractal snapback hat ($40) marbles turquoise and deep teal with brown-black streaks across the crown, and the black underbrim carries a white Flower of Life grid. A 150 g/m² polyester crown, plastic snap closure, one size: our pick for the January walk to Hill Auditorium.
The Back 40 at Blissfest, and a blanket with ears
Blissfest's page mentions seeing the Milky Way from its Back 40 campground. Our hooded blanket with cat ears ($150) turns a camp chair into a seat for the whole sky: a polyester fleece pullover (300 g/m²) in one oversized 4XL, with a quarter-length zip and a front pocket where both hands fit.

Looking up over the Main Stage
Blissfest's page tells you to look up: sunsets, a rising or setting moon, and on a lucky night the Northern Lights over the Main Stage. Keep the hood close, stay for the last song, and check the northern sky on the walk to your tent. When you're ready to cross state lines, start with the festivals we'd travel for in 2027.

Frequently asked questions
Is Hart Plaza home to more than one Detroit festival?
Yes, two big ones. Movement fills the riverfront plaza with electronic music May 29–31, 2027, over Memorial Day, and the free Detroit Jazz Festival follows on Labor Day weekend, September 3–6, 2027. In 2026 the jazz festival put every stage inside Hart Plaza and played until 11 p.m. most nights beside the Detroit River, so bring a layer.
Does a Blissfest day ticket include camping?
No. Under Blissfest's 2026 rules, camping and overnight parking were only for weekend wristband holders, and Saturday and Sunday day tickets ran out at midnight. Camping came with an area-specific parking pass, at no charge per person. Blissfest 2027 runs July 9–11 at its Festival Farm outside Cross Village, near Harbor Springs.
Who is playing the 2027 Ann Arbor Folk Fest?
Friday, January 29 brings Trampled by Turtles, Richard Thompson & Band, The War and Treaty, Tray Wellington Band and The Rebel Eves. Saturday, January 30 has Colin Hay, Mavis Staples, Tommy Emmanuel, Vienna Teng and DuPont Phillips. Jeff Daniels hosts both nights of the 50th Folk Fest at Hill Auditorium, and each show starts at 7 p.m.
What is the Bayou at Big Fam?
It's Big Fam's immersive art area, curated by KatFish EyeKandy. Its page describes a woodland bayou where you follow Alice past a fisherman's village, a fish market, a boathouse and a lighthouse to the Bayou stage, which pairs BassBoss sound with side platforms for flow performers. Big Fam returns to Brooklyn, Michigan, in September 2027.
