The outfit you planned in the mirror meets the real night on the walk from the parking garage. Night air finds your collar. Security asks about your bag. Then the doors open onto air warmed by thousands of people, and the jacket you needed outside becomes something to carry for three hours.
A concert outfit has to pass four tests in one night: the walk in, the gate, the show and the walk back out. The venue decides which test is hardest.
We're Magus and Lylyth Fawn, Los Angeles visionary artists most at home where the music is loud. This is our venue-by-venue plan, season by season, starting with the one piece that wins the walk in and the walk out.
What should you wear to a concert?
Dress for the venue first, the season second and the walk home third. Indoors, wear one breathable statement piece and skip anything you'd have to hold. Outdoors, add a layer that knots at the waist. Magus Fawn's rule for any concert: pockets over bags, broken-in shoes, and art worn outermost so the stage lights catch it.
| Venue | The night in three words | Wear |
|---|---|---|
| Arena | Warm, crowded, strict | Velvet tee, front pockets, no bulky coat |
| Outdoor amphitheater | Warm, then cool | Tee plus something cozy for the encore |
| Club | Hot and close | A short-sleeve statement shirt |
| Festival field | Sun, dust, distance | Hat, breathable top, a small bag |
If the show is really a rave, our guide to what to wear to a rave covers the genre codes.
Can you wear a festival cloak to a concert?
Yes, and it may be the smartest piece you bring. Two of a concert's four tests happen outside, and a Magus Fawn festival cloak handles both: it goes on in the parking garage, holds phone, card and keys where bags are limited, and opens wide or goes to coat check once the room warms up.

The investment piece for every venue. The Mystical Egypt women's festival cloak ($250) stacks gold glyph columns down both sides of the zipper on black, ankhs, watchful eyes and birds in profile, with robed figures on the front panels and two violet-and-gold medallions near the hem: a temple wall you can zip, and Egypt's sacred script reads beautifully under a light rig. It's micro-mink poly outside with an ultra-soft microfiber fleece lining in black or white faux fur (listed at 200 g/m²), a double front zipper, heavy drawstrings and four pockets, two of them interior stash pockets. Unisex fit, XS–5XL.
What do you wear to an arena concert?
Wear something light and bright with deep pockets, because an arena warms up once it fills and some barely allow a bag. A short-sleeve tee or polo handles the heat of the crowd, and front pockets replace a purse. At Magus Fawn we'd add one shimmering piece, since arena lighting rigs sweep the whole bowl.
Read your venue's page before you pack. Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, for one, states on its general information and FAQ page that "Bags, backpacks, purses, totes, clear bags, fanny packs, and camera bags are not allowed," while "Small clutches and wallets smaller than 5" x 9" x 1" are permitted."

The tee that catches the lighting rig. The Mechanical Kraken crushed velvet T-shirt ($60) spreads a symmetrical sea creature down the chest, tentacles coiling into silver filigree over teal, navy and violet, with a violet jellyfish drifting near the hem. Half sea legend, half clockwork, it suits a room of steel trusses. It's 240 g/m² crushed velvet (95% poly, 5% spandex), crew neck, regular fit in XS–5XL (its love story: The Dawn Haul Wager).
For coat check and jacket stashing, see our guide to what to wear to an indoor rave.
What do you wear to an outdoor amphitheater concert?
Wear a light base for the opener and bring real warmth for the encore, because amphitheaters cool off as the night goes on. The Hollywood Bowl's own FAQ says it plainly: "It can get chilly later in the evening." Magus Fawn's amphitheater formula: a tee, one cozy layer and shoes that handle stairs.
The Bowl's FAQ page adds "We have a casual dress code" and "Wear whatever's comfortable (but no bare feet, please!)", and suggests "a blanket or an extra jacket." We like a piece that's both.
The blanket the Bowl asked for. The Cyber Punk Mech hooded blanket with ears ($150) is a blanket with sleeves, a cat-ear hood, a front quarter zip and an oversized front pocket. Its print mirrors chrome machinery glowing turquoise and electric blue, with amber sparks and white line geometry stacked down the center: a light show for the hillside seats. It's 300 g/m² poly fleece in one oversized size (4XL); our hooded blanket guide has the rest of the family.
Bag rules shift here too. The Bowl's house rules say "Bags do not need to be clear but must be able to fit under your seat" and "measure no more than 15 inches wide, 15 inches high, or 22 inches long."

The bag that rides up front. Where small bags are welcome, the Alien Dimensions chest bag ($50) fills its front panel with big-eyed alien faces in lilac, sky blue and pink under fine white line geometry, an audience from another dimension. Hand-sewn and dye-sublimated, it hangs from one strap and rides where your hand finds it.
What do you wear to a concert at a small club?
Wear one short-sleeve statement piece and nothing that swings, because a club show packs you shoulder to shoulder in a warm room. Fitted shirts, polos and sleeveless tops all work; long coats belong to the walk there. At Magus Fawn we'd pick velvet with a collar, which reads sharp in low light and moves with you.

The collar for the front row. The Crimson Fenrir crushed velvet polo shirt ($65) raises a red-eyed black wolf out of crimson smoke, a pale full moon hanging just below the collar. Norse myth's giant wolf looks right at home a few feet from a guitar amp. The listing promises a "sharp stand-up collar" with short sleeves, in 240 g/m² crushed velvet (95% poly, 5% spandex), regular fit in S–5XL.
What do you wear to a concert in a festival field?
Dress for a full day: a hat for sun, a breathable top, shorts or light pants with pockets, and one warm layer in a small bag for after dark. A field means walking between stages, standing in dust and staying until the last set. Magus Fawn's field kit is art you can wear for twelve hours, starting from the top.

The crown for the main stage. The Celestial Temple snapback hat ($40) builds a temple across the crown in violet, cobalt and teal, columns and glowing orbs gathered around a radiant emblem, with grey interlocking Flower of Life circles across the black brim. It's 100% poly at 150 g/m², adjustable, one size fits most (read its midnight-sun story: Where the Sun Forgets to Set).
Desert, forest and beach festivals each get their own formula in our music festival outfits guide.
Concert outfits by season, from one city's numbers
National Weather Service averages for New York's Central Park, 1991–2020, set the outdoor half of every concert night:
| Season | Average high | Average low | The outfit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Winter | 42°F | 30°F | Short sleeves inside, a full warm layer for the walk |
| Spring | 61°F | 45°F | Tee plus a hoodie, legs covered |
| Summer | 83°F | 68°F | One breathable piece, a hat for daytime shows |
| Autumn | 65°F | 52°F | Tee plus a hoodie tied on until the encore |
Those are the NWS New York Central Park normals. Spring and autumn nights land within seven degrees of each other, and only summer lets you skip the layer.
What do you wear to a concert in winter?
Wear short sleeves or a light top under a warm outer layer you can open, carry or check, because a winter concert is two climates. NWS averages for Central Park put winter lows near 30°F outside, while a full arena runs warm. Magus Fawn's winter concert outfit pairs leggings and a light top with a faux-fur-lined cloak.

The long walk home. The Liquified Abyss men's festival cloak ($250) pours the deep sea into a slow marble of plum, midnight blue, rose and teal, veined with gold and unbroken from hood to hem. Same build as every Magus Fawn cloak: micro-mink poly outside, a faux-fur lining in black or white, a double front zipper and four pockets, unisex fit in XS–5XL.

The legs under the cloak. The Madriax Pink women's yoga leggings ($70) run a honeycomb of hexagons in wine, magenta and fuchsia, with rings of beads at the hips and dark feathered sweeps down each leg. They're 225 g/m² microfiber (75% recycled poly, 25% elastane) with four-way stretch and a raised waistband, regular fit in XS–XL. The listing asks you to avoid rough surfaces, so on concrete steps, sit on the cloak.

Shoes, pockets and the layer you carry
- Shoes you've already danced in. Closed toes for a packed floor, broken-in soles for the stairs and the long walk out.
- Pockets before bags. Where bags are limited, your clothes become the bag: phone in a zipped front pocket, card in a cloak's stash pocket.
- One layer with a plan. Knot a hoodie at your waist, open the cloak, or check it where there's coat check. Decide before you leave.
Sizing and timing before the show
- Room for a sweater. Per our FAQ, cloaks and hoodies welcome a bigger size, "sometimes even 2 sizes up to fit extra layers under."
- Count back from the show date. Printing and sewing take 7–11 business days after checkout and delivery 6–14 more, so allow 25 business days, about five weeks.
- Every order is final, so ask first. Write to art@magusfawn.com with your measurements and we'll pick a size with you.
- A gift with the tickets. Order by Tuesday, November 17, and even the longest production and delivery times land it by December 24.
- Shipping. Free on US orders of $70+, $8 below that.
Dress for the show: women's cloaks · men's cloaks · hooded blankets · crushed velvet tees · velvet polos · snapback hats · chest bags · leggings
The lights drop, the first song kicks in, and the whole room turns toward the stage. Wear something you'd be happy to be seen in when they come back up.
Frequently asked questions
Should you wear the band's shirt to their concert?
You can. The old joke says never wear the band's shirt to the band's show, yet plenty of fans do it proudly. The bolder move is a shirt that matches the music's mood without the logo, so you stand out in a sea of merch. Magus Fawn's printed tees and polos were made for exactly that role.
Do general admission and seated tickets call for different concert outfits?
Yes. General admission means hours on your feet in a dense crowd, so prioritize broken-in shoes, front pockets and breathable fabric. A seated ticket gives you a seat for a layer and room for a little more drama, such as a hooded blanket or a cloak. Check your venue's bag rules either way.
