Rave Outfits by Color: Black, White, Rainbow and Pastel Looks (and When Each One Shines)

|Magus Fawn

From the hill above the main field, a festival crowd sorts itself like a paint box.

Down by the tent with the strobes, it pools into black: mesh sleeves, cargo pockets, a silver pendant flashing once and vanishing. At the trance stage, white and lavender drift under the flags, soft as chalk. Past the food trucks, the psy dome spills every color at once, magenta into lime into tangerine, and someone in a rainbow one-piece is already waving at you from a hundred yards off.

The music did the sorting. Choosing a rave outfit by color is really choosing a stage, a light show and a tribe.

We're Magus and Lylyth Fawn, Los Angeles visionary artists, and we design in all four families. This guide covers black, white, rainbow and pastel looks: how each reads under lasers and in daylight, which genres wear which, and real pieces in every palette.

How do rave outfit colors look under lasers and daylight?

Under lasers and stage light, white and pale tones act like a screen and take on whatever color the rig throws, while deep, saturated colors hold their own. In daylight, every print shows its true palette. Black is strongest in the dark, pastels and white shine in sun, and rainbow reads in both.

Lasers have high temporal coherence, which, as Wikipedia's laser entry puts it, "permits them to emit light with a very narrow frequency spectrum." A green beam is close to pure green, so a white tee turns green with it, then violet on the next sweep.

The Purkinje effect shifts the eye's sensitivity toward blue in low light, so "reds will appear darker relative to other colors as light levels decrease." That's why blues, violets and teals keep their glow at the back of a dark floor.

Black light is its own category, and we make no glow promise there (more in the FAQ below).

Palette Under lasers and stage light In daylight Its home stage
Black Recedes, so silver and one bright detail pop Sharp and graphic Techno and warehouse floors
White Catches every beam color Bright and clean Trance, sunrise and day parties
Rainbow Saturated tones hold their own Full-volume color Psytrance and the psy dome
Pastel Soft, picks up the light's tint Glows gently Trance and golden-hour sets

How do you make an all black rave outfit stand out?

Build an all black rave outfit from textures and one detail that catches light: sheer mesh against matte cotton, a print in silver or charcoal, a single metallic accessory. Black on black recedes into the dark, so the eye goes straight to whatever reflects. That's the techno look, dark from across the room and detailed up close.

Void Mandala mesh top from the back: charcoal and grey mandalas on black long sleeves, an all black rave outfit at a festival main stage

Start with texture. The Void Mandala mesh top ($55) layers charcoal and grey mandalas of every size across black, rings inside rings like ripples on a dark pond, with long sleeves that keep the pattern moving when your arms go up. It's sheer 95% poly / 5% spandex mesh in a skinny fit, sizes XS–6XL; wear a black bralette or bodysuit underneath.

Black Mystic Eye women's festival cloak worn open with the hood up: silver-grey Flower of Life tiling and round medallions on black, an all black rave outfit layer

Then add the queue layer. The Black Mystic Eye women's festival cloak ($250) tiles silver-grey Flower of Life lines down both front panels, with round medallions spinning on each sleeve, all on black. It has a micro-mink poly outer, a black or white faux fur lining, a double front zipper and four pockets, unisex fit XS–5XL (read its story: Brushes Down on the Last Note).

The finishing touch is one piece of hardware, a chain or a pendant, so the strobe has something to find.

When should you wear a white rave outfit?

Wear a white rave outfit when the light is on your side: daytime stages, sunrise sets, trance nights and any event with a strong laser rig. White reflects whatever color the lights throw, so it changes all night long. It also photographs crisp in sun. Pack a darker layer for the walk back to camp.

White is the most theatrical color on a dark floor. Under a sweep of lasers you turn violet, then emerald, then gold: the screen the light show was looking for. Amsterdam's Sensation built a whole event around that idea, with every guest dressed in white.

White Fractal Bubble crushed velvet tee at a festival main stage: a pale lace-like fractal bubble pattern in soft grey and lavender on white, a white rave outfit for daylight

For a white base with art in it, the White Fractal Bubble crushed velvet T-shirt ($60) covers white in a pale, lace-like web of fractal bubbles in soft grey and lavender, quiet from across the field and intricate from a hug away. It's crushed velvet, 95% poly / 5% spandex at 240 g/m², short sleeves and a crew neck, regular fit, XS–5XL. Its story proves white works at techno too: Big One Means Yes, set at a Berlin open air.

Our guide to Psychedelic T-Shirts compares how velvet and cotton show a print. And since our cloaks come with a black or white faux fur lining, a white-lined cloak keeps the palette going after dark.

How do you wear a rainbow rave outfit without clashing?

Let one piece carry the rainbow and keep the rest solid, ideally in a color pulled from the print. A full-spectrum piece already holds its own harmony, so it needs black, white or one echo color around it, not a second rainbow. Psytrance floors love this look, and it reads from every corner of the field.

An analogous color scheme uses colors "adjacent to each other on the color wheel," like violet, magenta and pink, and looks calm. Complementary colors sit "on opposite sides," like lime and violet, and give off sparks. A rainbow print does both, so let it lead.

Lucid one-piece swimsuit at a festival main stage: a rainbow rave outfit in magenta, violet, lime, tangerine and turquoise with a mirrored branching form across the chest

The Lucid women's one-piece swimsuit ($65; $68 in 2XL, $69 in 3XL) is the whole spectrum in one piece: a mirrored, branching form in magenta and lilac across the chest, then a kaleidoscope starburst of tangerine, lime, turquoise and violet rays down to the hips. The listing marks it as Lylyth's personal pick. It's 75% recycled poly / 25% elastane at 225 g/m² with a double-layer front, regular fit, XS–3XL (Lucid's design story is Three Songs to the Rail).

Psy Swirl Green men's festival leggings from the back: lime-green and turquoise swirls on each leg, with a black mesh tank on a dusty festival field

Rainbow's neon cousins work the same way. The Psy Swirl Green men's festival leggings ($65) curl lime-green and turquoise swirls up each leg, two bright colors that read like a highlighter from the back of the crowd. They're 90% poly / 10% spandex microfiber in a skinny fit, XS–3XL; pair them with a black tank so the legs do the talking (Psy Swirl stars in The Lady of the Waves).

What is a pastel rave outfit?

A pastel rave outfit is built from soft, light colors: lavender, mint, baby pink, lemon and sky blue. Wikipedia describes pastels as "a pale family of colors" with "high value and low or medium saturation." The look reads dreamy in daylight and takes on the stage light's tint at night, a favorite at trance stages.

Pastel is gentle without going quiet: one pastel print with white or silver reads like a sunrise, and one deeper accent in violet or teal carries it after dark.

Shroom Flower of Life Pastel one-shoulder cropped top: lavender, mint, pink and lemon mushroom gills around a spiral medallion, a pastel rave outfit with black leggings

For pure pastel, the Shroom Flower of Life Pastel one-shoulder cropped top ($40) fans mushroom gills in lavender, mint, pink and lemon around a spiral medallion at the center, sorbet colors on a forest-floor fairy tale. It's 80% poly / 20% spandex at 230 g/m², sleeveless and one-shouldered, skinny fit, XS–2XL (its forest story is Lost on Purpose).

Angel Catcher Light Purple sleeveless bodysuit from the back: lavender and violet with white starburst lines and a Flower of Life hexagon, a pastel rave look at a sunny festival

For lavender with a little more depth, the Angel Catcher Light Purple sleeveless bodysuit ($55) spreads lavender and violet geometry with white starburst lines fanning across the shoulders and a Flower of Life hexagon at the small of the back. It has a half-high collar that sits relaxed, 92% poly / 8% spandex, skinny fit, XS–2XL (Angel Catcher's story is The Last Campsite).

Genre color codes: techno black, trance white and pastel, psy rainbow

These are crowd habits, never rules, but knowing them helps a look feel at home:

  • Techno: black. Detroit's sound and Berlin's warehouses made black the uniform: dark base, texture and one detail. See our techno party guide for the full look.
  • Trance: white and pastel. Uplifting melodies and big laser rigs suit pale colors that catch the light, plus kandi and a little shimmer.
  • Psytrance: rainbow. The scene took shape on the beaches of Goa, which by 1990–91 had become "a popular destination for partying," and Goa-style parties spread worldwide from 1993, full spectrum and all. Our psytrance festival guide covers flowing layers and sunrise.

Every genre on the lineup? Pack pieces from two families and change palettes when you change stages. What to Wear to a Rave builds the full head-to-toe plan.

Sizes, timing and the fine print, by palette

Frequently asked questions

Can you wear all black to an EDM festival?

Absolutely. All black fits any EDM festival, from the techno tent to the main stage, and it makes a perfect canvas for one bright accent: a printed hat, a glowing pendant, a colorful cloak lining. In a sea of color, black even stands out on its own. For daytime sets, pick breathable fabrics like mesh, cotton and microfiber.

What colors photograph best at a festival?

Saturated colors photograph best: cobalt, violet, magenta, lime and turquoise hold up in bright sun and under stage lights alike. White and pastels look luminous at golden hour and sunrise. Black photographs sharp against a colorful crowd, especially with one reflective detail. For night photos, a print with pale lines gives the flash something to catch.

What is an all-white rave?

An all-white rave is a dance party with a white dress code, so the whole crowd becomes one screen for the light show. The best known is Sensation, an indoor event born in Amsterdam in 2000 under the slogan "Be Part Of The Night – Dress in White." Build yours from a white base, silver accents and a pale layer.

Do Magus Fawn prints glow under black light?

None of our product listings describe a print as UV reactive, so we don't promise a black-light glow. What we promise is saturated, dye-sublimated color that reads under stage lights and in sunshine and won't fade or crack. For a guaranteed glow, add face paint, kandi or accessories that are sold specifically as UV reactive.
