Every psychedelic T-shirt leads two lives, and you can watch both from the same campsite.
Hang a cotton tee and a velvet tee from the guyline and let the day pass between them. At nine in the morning the sun finds the cotton one first. The art sits crisp and steady, every line as clean as a printed page. At nine at night the velvet one wakes up. Lasers sweep the main stage, the crushed pile catches each beam and scatters it, and a phoenix's wings seem to ripple every time you breathe.
Same kind of art. Two different moods. That's the real choice behind a festival tee: what the fabric does with the print once it's on your body.
Here, "psychedelic" means one thing: an art style, saturated, symmetrical and full of detail that rewards a second look. We're Magus and Lylyth Fawn, Los Angeles visionary artists, and we design every print ourselves. This guide compares our velvet and cotton tees spec by spec, then helps you choose.
What is the difference between a crushed velvet T-shirt and a cotton T-shirt?
A Magus Fawn crushed velvet T-shirt is 95% polyester and 5% spandex at 240 g/m², with a textured pile that shimmers under light. The cotton T-shirt is 100% cotton at 190 g/m², with a smooth, matte face where the art reads calm and clear. Both are $60, sized XS–5XL, with edge-to-edge dye-sublimated art.
| Crushed velvet tee | Cotton tee | |
|---|---|---|
| Fabric | Crushed velvet, 95% poly / 5% spandex | 100% cotton |
| Fabric weight | 240 g/m² | 190 g/m² |
| Surface | Pressed pile that glints and shifts | Smooth and matte |
| How the art reads | Shimmering, changes with the light | Crisp and steady, like a fine print |
| Fit and sizes | Regular fit, XS–5XL | Regular fit, XS–5XL |
| Price | $60 (a 180 g/m² poly jersey version is $50) | $60 |
| Best hour | Sunset to the last set | Sunrise to sunset, and every ordinary day |
Both fabrics are dye-sublimated, so the ink becomes part of the fiber instead of a layer on top: "colors won't fade and image won't crack — ever." Doing that on 100% cotton takes a newer process from our cut-and-sew partners, and our guide to dye sublimation on cotton explains why it's special.
What is crushed velvet?
Crushed velvet is velvet whose pile has been pressed or twisted in different directions, so the surface catches light at many angles and looks dappled and lustrous. Magus Fawn crushed velvet is a 95% polyester, 5% spandex fabric at 240 g/m², and the dye-sublimated art lives right inside that textured surface.
The velvet glossary on Wikipedia calls crushed velvet "lustrous velvet with patterned appearance," made by pressing the pile down in different directions or by twisting the fabric while wet. Every fold faces the light differently, so a print never looks the same twice.
The phoenix is the oldest comeback story there is, and on velvet it gets a fitting glow. The Golden Phoenix crushed velvet T-shirt ($60) spreads bronze and gold wings around a glowing green medallion, with teal flame-filigree above and violet and blue feather streaks falling toward a row of temple pillars at the hem. It's a short-sleeve crew neck in 240 g/m² crushed velvet, regular fit in XS–5XL. (Read its art car story: The Fourth Feather.)

Cyber Punk Mech is where ancient geometry meets the machine age. The Cyber Punk Mech crushed velvet T-shirt ($60) stacks white-line Metatron's Cube figures and Flower of Life circles down the center of a cosmic swirl in cobalt, violet and teal, lit by amber flares. Same 95/5 crushed velvet, same XS–5XL range, made for the big room after dark. (Read its New Year's Eve story: Eleven Fifty-Nine.)
Is crushed velvet shiny?
Yes, softly. Crushed velvet has a lustrous, dappled sheen rather than a mirror shine, because the pressed pile faces many directions and each fold catches light differently. Under lasers, string lights or a low evening sun, a printed design seems to ripple as you move, then settles into rich, deep color in the shade.
That sheen changes how you shop: high-contrast designs turn dramatic on velvet, and fine all-over textures turn into a glow.

Dreamweaver is a tapestry you can dance in. The Dreamweaver crushed velvet T-shirt ($60) mirrors cobalt, sky-blue and lavender filigree around a pointed-eared beast's face, with small pyramids rising through the weave. It's 240 g/m² crushed velvet in XS–5XL, and on many designs the listing also offers a 190 g/m² cotton version.

For the dancer who likes their art quiet until you lean in, the White Fractal Bubble crushed velvet T-shirt ($60) covers silvery white in a tight lace of charcoal fractal rosettes. From across the forest stage it reads as soft silver; from a hug away, the rosettes open into pattern. It's the most understated tee here, in 240 g/m² crushed velvet, XS–5XL.
Cotton festival tees: matte color for daylight and every day
Cotton shows the art plainly: a smooth, matte surface, crisp lines and steady color. Our cotton tee is 100% cotton at 190 g/m², a short-sleeve crew neck in a regular fit from XS to 5XL, and it's the tee we'd pick for travel days, camp mornings and the farmer's market.

Angel Catcher is sacred geometry with wings. The Angel Catcher cotton T-shirt ($60) circles a pale-blue Flower of Life with feathered wings on black, flanked by Metatron's Cube medallions at the shoulders and star-in-circle medallions near the hem.

The Mechanical Kraken cotton T-shirt ($60) brings the deep sea to the dance floor: a domed, glowing-eyed kraken spreads its arms across the chest and sleeves above a spired, cathedral-like machine, all in navy, steel blue and lavender with teal glints. On cotton, the detail reads like an etching. (Read its festival cruise story: The Lights Under the Wake.)
Then there are the liquid designs. Paper marbling floats color on water to make "patterns similar to smooth marble," and on matte cotton our marbled art looks hand-poured.

The Liquid Fire cotton T-shirt ($60) pours molten orange, scarlet and gold through ribbons of violet and cobalt, a sunset caught mid-swirl. It's the brightest tee here, made for a daytime stage.

The cool-water twin is the Blue Marble cotton T-shirt ($60), with cobalt, sky blue, white and charcoal folding into each other like marbled stone or a river seen from above.
What kind of T-shirt should you wear to a rave?
Wear the T-shirt that fits the hour and the room. Crushed velvet suits night sets, lasers and dark warehouses, where its sheen catches every beam. Cotton suits daytime stages, camp mornings and long travel days. Either way, choose all-over art you love, a comfortable fit for dancing, and plain bottoms that let the print lead.
- Techno and warehouse nights: velvet in a deep palette. Let the lasers do the color work.
- Psytrance and trance: geometry or fractals in either fabric; cotton for the morning floor, velvet for the night.
- House day parties and lake days: cotton in a bright design, with shorts and sunglasses.
- Travel day and the afters: cotton, as good on a plane as at the campfire.
A printed tee shines with solid bottoms, or go bold with printed ones like the Crimson Fenrir cotton shorts ($65): a snarling gray-and-black wolf with red eyes prowls one leg through crimson smoke on black, our newest design. They're 100% cotton at 245 g/m², with side pockets and a back pocket, regular fit in S–5XL. (Read the wolf's Halloween story: The Ribbon and the Wolf.)
Shopping for someone who'd rather wear a collar or a hood? Our guide to festival shirts for men covers velvet polos and cotton hooded tanks.
When the sun drops and the air turns crisp, the tee becomes your base layer. Pull a hoodie over it; our psychedelic hoodies guide sorts them by art style.
Washing and care for velvet and cotton tees
One routine covers both fabrics: machine wash cold with like colors, skip the bleach, and tumble dry low, though hanging to dry is always best. Skip the iron and the dry cleaner too. Dye sublimation puts the ink inside the fiber, so the art stays bright wash after wash.
- Velvet: hang it straight from the wash and let the pile settle on its own. The crushed texture is the design, so it never needs pressing.
- Cotton: cotton can settle slightly in its first wash (our cotton hoodies list 3–5%), so cold water and a hang dry keep the fit right where you chose it.
Sizing: XS to 5XL in both fabrics
Both tees come in a regular fit from XS to 5XL, and every size costs the same. Order your usual size for a tee you'll wear on its own. If you're between sizes, size up, especially in cotton. Not sure? Email your measurements to art@magusfawn.com and we'll help you choose.
Every piece is made to order: production takes 7–11 business days, then delivery takes 6–14 business days. All sales are final. US shipping is $8 under $70 and free at $70+, so a velvet tee and a cotton tee together ship free, and so does a tee with the Crimson Fenrir shorts.
Gifting one? A velvet tee makes a fine present for the raver in your life. Unity, who bought our Enochian Vision velvet tee as a gift for their partner, a festival DJ, wrote in March 2025: "The quality is exceptional and the unique design is purely divine." To arrive by Thursday, December 24, 2026 on the longest production and delivery times, order by Tuesday, November 17; mid-range timing stretches that to Wednesday, November 25.
Hang one of each on the guyline at your next festival. By morning you'll know which one you reach for, and by midnight you'll be glad you packed the other.

Frequently asked questions
Is crushed velvet stretchy?
Yes. Magus Fawn crushed velvet is 95% polyester and 5% spandex, and that spandex gives the fabric stretch and recovery, so the tee moves with you through a long set. The cotton tee is 100% cotton, with a soft, natural feel. Both come in a regular fit from XS to 5XL, at the same price in every size.
Can you wear crushed velvet in summer?
Yes. A short-sleeve crushed velvet tee is a summer-evening favorite, when the sun drops and stage lights make the pile shimmer. For the bright middle of the day, we reach for a 100% cotton tee. Pack one of each: cotton for daytime stages and camp, velvet for sunset through the very last set.
Do Magus Fawn T-shirts come in plus sizes?
Yes. Both the crushed velvet and the cotton T-shirt offer sizes from XS to 5XL in a regular fit, and every size is the same price. Because each piece is made to order and all sales are final, email your measurements to art@magusfawn.com if you're between sizes, and we'll help you choose.
Can you wear a crushed velvet T-shirt every day?
Absolutely. We wear our clothes everywhere, all the time: at home, at the park with the kids, at the beach and at the farmer's market. A velvet tee pairs with jeans or joggers as easily as with festival shorts. Wash it cold, hang it to dry, and the colors stay bright for years of ordinary days.
