Music Festivals in North Carolina 2027: Mountain Fiddles, Piedmont Campouts and a 100th Dance

|Magus Fawn

Next August, cloggers, ballad singers and string bands take an Asheville stage for the 100th Mountain Dance and Folk Festival, which Bascom Lamar Lunsford first organized in 1928. It's the longest-running event on a North Carolina list that also holds a twelve-stage roots festival in the foothills, free Saturday nights on Pack Square and two campouts on a farm near Pittsboro.

Pack by altitude: Asheville's airport sits about 1,700 feet above Raleigh-Durham's, and even its warmest nights, in July, average cooler than Raleigh-Durham's in June.

MerleFest to fall Shakori: North Carolina's festival table

As of October 30, 2026, Raleigh's Hopscotch and Breakaway's Charlotte stop were still waiting on 2027 dates. The other five are set, from MerleFest at the end of April to the fall Shakori Hills weekend in October.

The Blue Ridge side: Wilkesboro and Asheville

MerleFest: twelve stages at Wilkes Community College (April 29–May 2)

MerleFest began in 1988 as a Wilkes Community College fundraiser in memory of Eddy Merle Watson, and it still fills the college grounds in Wilkesboro. It runs 12 stages of what it calls "traditional plus" music, and the 2027 lineup is still to come. Its festival information page warns that April in the foothills can swing through every season, rain included.

Outfit note: Asheville's normal April low is 44.6°F, and Wilkesboro runs within about a degree. Wear the cloak between stages after dark.

Shindig on the Green: free Saturday nights on Pack Square (July 3–31)

Since 1967, Asheville has gathered "along about sundown" on summer Saturdays for Shindig on the Green. Its 61st season runs five free Saturdays, July 3 through 31, 2027, from 7 to 10 p.m. on the Bascom Lamar Lunsford Stage in Pack Square Park, and 2,000 to 3,000 people come each evening.

Outfit note: July nights in Asheville average 64.9°F. A cotton hoodie and a lawn chair cover it.

Mountain Dance and Folk Festival: the 100th edition (August 5–7)

Lunsford's first Mountain Dance and Folk Festival took place in 1928, and 2027 brings the 100th. Its three evenings, August 5, 6 and 7 from 7 to 9 p.m., are three different shows at Asheville High School's auditorium: bluegrass, old ballads, clogging, Big Circle Mountain Smooth Dance and storytelling. Posted 2027 prices: $20 a night for adults, $5 for ages 6 to 12, $55 for all three nights.

Outfit note: the show is indoors and Asheville's August low averages 64.0°F, so joggers are plenty for the walk out after the show.

Piedmont weekends: a Pittsboro farm, Greensboro streets, Raleigh and Charlotte

Shakori Hills GrassRoots Festival: one farm, two campouts (May 6–9 and October 7–10)

Twice a year, a farm near Pittsboro becomes the Shakori Hills GrassRoots Festival of Music & Dance, a family-friendly world music festival with camping. Both 23rd editions are set: spring on May 6–9, 2027 and fall on October 7–10. Its info page, still written for fall 2026, lists RV, vehicle and primitive tent sites, free entry for children 12 and under, a teen space called The Outpost and patchy cell signal.

Outfit note: Raleigh-Durham's normal low is 57.7°F in May and 50.3°F in October, and the country around the farm runs a degree or two cooler. Bring the cloak to both weekends.

North Carolina Folk Festival: three free days in Greensboro (September 10–12)

The North Carolina Folk Festival has set September 10–12, 2027 for three days of free music in downtown Greensboro. Its stages pair artists from across the state with performers from around the world.

Outfit note: Greensboro's September nights run about a degree cooler than Raleigh-Durham's 62.7°F. A tee by day, the hoodie after dark.

Hopscotch: Raleigh's downtown weekend (2027 dates TBA)

Hopscotch last filled downtown Raleigh on September 10–12, 2026, and its 2027 weekend is still unannounced. Its 2026 FAQ opened the City Plaza and Moore Square stages to all ages, admitted children 12 and under at no charge and left the day parties and Moore Square Commons open without a wristband.

Outfit note: a 62.7°F September normal low suits joggers and a light layer between venues.

Breakaway Carolina: a dragway weekend near Charlotte (2027 dates TBA)

In 2026 the touring festival set up at zMax Dragway at Charlotte Motor Speedway on September 25–26, for ages 18 and up (2026 Carolina page). Tampa, Atlanta, Ohio and Minnesota hold the first 2027 dates, and a second round of cities is promised. For looks city by city, see our Breakaway outfit guide.

Outfit note: Charlotte's September low sits within a degree of Raleigh-Durham's. Dress to dance; leave a cloak in the car for later.

Asheville or Raleigh-Durham: how far apart are the nights?

Packing for a mountain state: winged cloaks, a temple hoodie and gold joggers

Two cloaks lead the Magus Fawn edit for North Carolina, and every piece carries Blue Ridge blue, mountain green or autumn gold.

Smiling festivalgoer in pink-lensed aviators, thin blonde braids falling from the raised hood of the open Temple of Horus women's cloak, violet bodysuit and fishnets: green-gold wings on blue-violet

Green-gold wings for MerleFest and spring Shakori. The Temple of Horus women's cloak ($250) spreads translucent wings in lime, olive and lilac across both front panels, each traced with fine gold lines, over a blue-violet ground. Teal and cobalt paisley swirls curl down the sleeves and toward the hem.

Count four pockets: two deep ones at the sides and two inside, where the zippered one keeps a phone safe on the MerleFest shuttle. Fluffy microfiber fleece makes the faux-fur lining, black or white, behind a 200 g/m² micro-mink exterior. Pull the hood in by its heavy drawstrings, then zip up: the front closure is a double zipper. Unisex, XS through 5XL.

Festivalgoer with a beaded braided updo and lavender-tinted sunglasses, zipped into the Golden Scarab women's cloak on a sunny stage field: gold wings with violet panels on black, a magenta disc below the collar, gold glyphs to the hem

Black and gold for October at Shakori Hills. The Golden Scarab women's cloak ($250) sets broad gold wings on a black ground laced with faint indigo tendrils, spreading over the chest around two gem-like violet panels. A gold-ringed magenta disc sits below the collar under a blue-and-gold triangle, a smaller winged emblem marks the shoulder, and gold glyphs stream down to the hem.

Curly-haired man in mirrored round sunglasses wearing the Celestial Temple cotton pullover hoodie and black cargo pants: glowing teal rings on indigo and violet

A cotton layer for Shindig's lawn. The Celestial Temple cotton pullover hoodie ($100) lines up glowing teal rings and orbs in mirrored columns over indigo and violet, with a gold-lined circle of arcs mid-chest and a stepped gold temple shape near the hem. Sizes run XS to 6XL in a relaxed cut of 100% cotton (310 g/m²), with a drawstring hood and a kangaroo pocket. Wash it cold and air-dry it; the first wash shrinks it 3 to 5 percent.

Long-haired man wearing aviators, a charcoal tank and the Forest Wizard Gold joggers: an olive and amber-gold band at the hips, a pale horned skull with lime-green moss

Autumn gold for an August night in Asheville. The Forest Wizard Gold joggers ($100; $105 in 2XL, $108 in 3XL) wrap the hips in a band of amber gold swirled with olive. Down the leg, a pale horned skull hangs with lime-green moss beside violet blooms, over olive and charcoal scale-like patterning that runs to the cuffs. The face feels like cotton and the inside is brushed vegan fleece, in 96% recycled polyester and 4% elastane at 308 g/m²; the cut is slim, XS–3XL. Forest Wizard art also turns up in The Back Way In, our story of a farm festival in its 30th year, tucked into the North Carolina mountains.

Festivalgoer with teal-and-violet hair and forehead gems wearing the Angel Catcher Blue snapback: white starbursts on periwinkle around a cobalt hexagon, black brim

Blue Ridge blue on top. The Angel Catcher Blue snapback ($40) covers its crown in white starbursts with gold centers on periwinkle and sky blue, around a cobalt hexagon of interlocking circles that glows violet at its heart. The flat brim is black, latticed in fine grey, with an adjustable snap at the back.

Fleece with cat ears for October on the farm

Shakori Hills is a camping festival, and October nights on the farm average a little under 50°F. Wrap up at the campsite in our hooded blanket ($150), or wear it to the evening sets: 300 g/m² polyester fleece made into an oversized pullover, 4XL only. The extras: cat ears, a quarter zip and an outsized front pocket.

Counting business days back from Wilkesboro and Pittsboro

We make each piece to order. Take MerleFest: an order placed Wednesday, March 24 gets up to 11 business days to be printed, cut and sewn and up to 14 in transit, so even at that pace it reaches you by Wednesday, April 28, the eve of opening day. The second column adds one more working week, and our count skips weekends and federal holidays.

Festival and first day Last call With a week to spare
MerleFest, Thursday, April 29 Wednesday, March 24 Wednesday, March 17
Shakori Hills spring, Thursday, May 6 Wednesday, March 31 Wednesday, March 24
Shindig on the Green, Saturday, July 3 Wednesday, May 26 Wednesday, May 19

Our 2027 order-by guide explains the made-to-order clock. The joggers are cut slim; add a size, or two, for a roomier leg. Lylyth offers a size check by email (art@magusfawn.com) for anyone unsure, which helps because orders are final sale. US orders of $70 or more travel free.

From rain shells to lawn chairs

North Carolina's year asks for a rain shell at MerleFest in April, a lawn chair on Pack Square in July, a ticket for one of three nights at the 100th in August and a cloak for both Shakori Hills weekends. When you're ready to travel farther, our 2027 must-attend picks reach around the world.

Frequently asked questions

Where does MerleFest's Late Night Jam happen?

At The Walker Center on the Wilkes Community College campus, from 11 p.m. Saturday into Sunday morning, per its 2026 page. Once called the Midnight Jam, it grew from an after-hours gathering led by Doc Watson, his family and musician friends. Tickets are sold separately, and buses run back to parking and nearby campgrounds afterward.

Who plays at Shindig on the Green?

Volunteers spanning generations, from young dancers to ballad-singing great-grandmothers. The Stoney Creek Boys are the long-standing house band, joined on the Pack Square Park stage by bluegrass and old-time string bands, Big Circle Mountain Dancers, cloggers, smooth dancers, ballad singers and storytellers. Bring an instrument: informal jam sessions form around the park.

How long has the Mountain Dance and Folk Festival been running?

Since 1928. Bascom Lamar Lunsford organized the first one on Asheville's Pack Square as part of the Rhododendron Festival, and it soon became an event of its own. The 2027 edition, August 5–7 at the Asheville High School auditorium, is the 100th, with a different show of music, dance and stories each night.
