A pontoon idles off a public landing near Brainerd. A few hours south, someone threads a tent line between oak roots, and in Lowertown St. Paul a saxophone tests the room over warm brick.
Same state, three different dress codes.
Minnesota's festival year is short and generous: bass in a southern oak grove in May, a touring EDM weekend, free jazz and two big country campouts in summer, the Mississippi bluffs as the leaves turn. Both ends bring nights cool enough to make a hood the smartest thing in the car.
Magus and Lylyth Fawn draw the art behind our Los Angeles festival clothing, and we built this list the way we plan our own trips: official dates first, weather second, wardrobe last. Dates come from each festival's own site, read October 30, 2026.

Lows are NOAA's 1991–2020 normals for the festival month at two reference stations, Minneapolis–St. Paul airport (MSP) and Brainerd's airport, so treat them as a regional guide. Next door, our Midwest music festivals guide crosses into Michigan, Ohio and Wisconsin, and the 2027 festival calendar sorts the year by month.
Bass, jam and campground weekends
Infrasound: three nights in a southern oak grove (May 13–16)
Infrasound opens the season at Harmony Park Music Garden in Clarks Grove with "three nights of music and art" on May 13–16, 2027. Passes went on sale October 15, 2026, and the FAQ sets entry at 18+.
Outfit note: May is the coolest month here, 49.9°F at MSP and cooler down by the park, so bring velvet or cotton for sunset and keep the faux-fur-lined cloak for after dark under the oaks. Our Infrasound outfit guide has the park's weather night by night.
Breakaway Minnesota: a two-day EDM stop (June 25–26)
Breakaway has set June 25–26, 2027 for Minnesota, venue to come. The 2026 stop brought Zedd, Subtronics, Gryffin and Levity to St. Paul's Allianz Field Festival Grounds, with 18+ general admission and bags capped at 12 x 12 x 6 inches.
Outfit note: a bag that size fits a phone, not an outfit, so arrive layered: a velvet tee for sunset, a hoodie at the waist for later. Our Breakaway outfit guide dresses every stop.
Shangri-La: Labor Day weekend at Harmony Park (2027 dates TBA)
Shangri-La is Harmony Park's Labor Day weekend festival; the park's 2026 calendar listed September 4–7, and 2027 tickets go on sale in March. The 2026 lineup paired Wookiefoot, whose sound the festival describes as reggae, world beat, hip hop, funk, folk and rock, with Tropidelic and Balkan Bump. A Wellness Village runs yoga and sound meditation under the oaks, and the event info sets an 18+ rule with photo ID.
Outfit note: you carry your camp in from the lot, so pick pieces that work twice. One printed cloak covers the dusk yoga circle, the late sets and a 54°F night in the tent.
Boats and Bluegrass: the Mississippi at Winona (2027 dates TBA)
Boats and Bluegrass camps at Prairie Island Campground in Winona, below the bluffs in what the festival calls "the heart of the driftless." The 2026 edition ran September 24–26, and the weekend ticket bundles camping, music and boat rentals.
Outfit note: fleece and cotton for a paddle between sets, a hood after dark. For a river-camping mood, read Last Boat In, our canoe-trip story set in loon country.
Minnesota's big summer weekends
Twin Cities Jazz Festival: free in Lowertown (June 18–19)
The Twin Cities Jazz Festival has saved June 18–19, 2027 for Mears Park in St. Paul's Lowertown, and donations keep it free.
Outfit note: a walkable city evening near 60°F wants one good top and nothing to check. Let a velvet tee carry the art.
Lakes Jam: a raceway weekend in lake country (June 23–26)
Lakes Jam brings country and camping to Brainerd International Raceway on June 23–26, 2027, with Dierks Bentley, Max McNown and Chase Matthew announced so far. The raceway adds mud trucks, drifting and a costume contest.
Outfit note: Brainerd's June low of 53.2°F runs about seven degrees under the Twin Cities. Wear a printed cloak to the costume contest, then keep it zipped at the campsite once the stages go dark.
Minnesota Yacht Club: three days on Harriet Island (2027 dates TBA)
Minnesota Yacht Club held its 2026 edition on July 17–19 at Harriet Island Regional Park in St. Paul, under cottonwoods by the Mississippi: three days, two stages and 30 artists with no overlapping sets.
Outfit note: July is the warm peak (83.4°F by day at MSP). Dress light; save the hood for September.
WE Fest: country and camping at Soo Pass Ranch (August 4–7)
WE Fest returns to Soo Pass Ranch in Detroit Lakes on August 4–7, 2027, with campgrounds spread across 400 acres.
Outfit note: Brainerd swings from 79.2°F in August afternoons to 55.3°F at night. Pack breathable layers for the field and fleece for the campsite.
Bayfront Blues Festival: Lake Superior's waterfront (August 13–15)
The 38th annual Bayfront Blues Festival fills Bayfront Festival Park in Duluth on August 13–15, 2027.
Outfit note: an evening breeze off Lake Superior feels brisker than any inland number. Bring a hooded cloak for the closing sets.
Twin Cities and Brainerd normals, May through September
Minnesota festival nights range from the 40s to the mid-60s °F. NOAA's 1991–2020 normals put Brainerd's lows about seven degrees under the Twin Cities' in every festival month, and in May and September a hooded layer earns its place every night, even in the city, where lows sit near 50°F and 54°F.
| Month | MSP high / low | Brainerd high / low |
|---|---|---|
| May | 69.2°F / 49.9°F | 67.9°F / 42.7°F |
| June | 79.0°F / 60.4°F | 77.1°F / 53.2°F |
| July | 83.4°F / 65.3°F | 81.5°F / 57.7°F |
| August | 80.7°F / 62.8°F | 79.2°F / 55.3°F |
| September | 72.9°F / 54.2°F | 70.5°F / 46.9°F |

Indigo, cobalt and violet: what to wear in Minnesota
Magus Fawn's Minnesota picks share one palette: indigo, cobalt and violet, a northern sky after the last light. The cloak leads, because here it works hardest.

A temple in the stars. The Celestial Temple men's festival cloak ($250) draws an astronomer's temple in gold: arches, dials and rings over an indigo sky with violet nebulae, plus big green-gold planets at the hip and hem. The listing tops it with an eye inside a triangle, the old eye of providence. Open, the white lining catches the last light; hood up and zipped to the chin, it turns the stroll to your tent into stargazing.

A dragon for the harbor wind. The Blue Sorceress women's festival cloak ($250) starts with dark cobalt feathers at the chest and washes into turquoise, where a silver-white dragon rises over violet crystals and a blue-white orb blazes on the forearm. On the back sits a white unicorn above a glowing orb. Our pick for the Duluth harbor or a June night at Lakes Jam.
The print changes from cloak to cloak; the build doesn't. Micro-mink polyester outside, 200 g/m² per the listing. One faux-fur lining, black or white. A double zipper, a hood that cinches on heavy cords, and four pockets: one at each hip, two on the inside panels, one of the inner pair zipped. Unisex sizes, XS–5XL. The review we'd frame came from a Madriax cloak buyer in March 2023: "I was in the snow accidentally and stayed incredibly warm thanks to this cloak! Has pockets too!"

An eye for the May chill. On the Mystic Eye Blue cotton pullover hoodie ($100), an eye looks out between the drawstrings over three blue-white Flower of Life medallions, shrinking toward the hem, in turquoise branches on starry navy. The fabric is all cotton (310 g/m²), the fit relaxed, the range XS–6XL, with a kangaroo pocket; allow 3–5% for the first wash. Wear it for an Infrasound sunset or a September paddle at Winona.

Jewel rosettes, violet stars. The Madriax Blue joggers ($100; $105 in 2XL, $108 in 3XL) set cobalt and teal mandala rosettes at hips and ankles, with a Sri Yantra in the side rosette, and run a violet band of stars and hexagons across the knees. Brushed vegan fleece lines a cotton-feel face (308 g/m² by the listing), with side pockets, a drawstring at the waist and cuffs at the ankles. Slim cut, XS–3XL: size up for thermals on a WE Fest campsite night.

Lake water, worn. The Blue Marble crushed velvet t-shirt ($60, crushed velvet) marbles cobalt and pale sky blue through silver-gray veins and near-black eddies, Lake Superior in a crosswind. It's 240 g/m² of stretch velvet, regular cut, XS–5XL, for Twin Cities Jazz, Breakaway sunsets and July on Harriet Island.
A $150 fleece with ears for lake-country dawns
Lake-country campgrounds wake up cool even in August, and the first hour sits near the night's low. That's the moment for the hooded blanket with ears, $150: 300 g/m² polyester fleece that pulls on over your head, one oversized 4XL topped with cat ears, a zip under the chin and a two-hand front pocket.
Business-day math for Infrasound, Twin Cities Jazz and Lakes Jam
A Magus Fawn order enters the production queue at checkout (7–11 business days), then rides with the carrier for 6–14. Last call is 25 business days before the last working day ahead of opening, the comfortable date 30, weekends and federal holidays excluded.
- Infrasound (opens May 13): comfortable Wednesday, March 31; last call Wednesday, April 7.
- Twin Cities Jazz (opens June 18): comfortable Wednesday, May 5; last call Wednesday, May 12. Memorial Day drops out of the count; Juneteenth (observed June 18) is opening day itself.
- Lakes Jam (opens June 23): comfortable Friday, May 7; last call Friday, May 14.
Our order-by dates guide runs the math for dozens more 2027 festivals. Size cloaks and hoodies one or two up for sweaters; measurements go to art@magusfawn.com. Every sale is final, and a US order that reaches $70 pays no shipping.
From the oak grove to the harbor
By late September the last tent comes down on Prairie Island and the bluffs above Winona go quiet. Until then, the last song belongs to whoever brought a hood. For the wider year, our must-attend festivals list is the next stop.

Frequently asked questions
Can you camp at Infrasound, Lakes Jam and WE Fest?
Yes, all three. Infrasound and Shangri-La both camp at Harmony Park in Clarks Grove, and Boats and Bluegrass bundles camping into its weekend ticket in Winona. Lakes Jam camps at Brainerd International Raceway, and WE Fest spreads its campgrounds across 400 acres at Soo Pass Ranch. Breakaway and Twin Cities Jazz are city festivals.
Is the Twin Cities Jazz Festival free?
Yes. The Twin Cities Jazz Festival in Mears Park, St. Paul, is free to attend, and it asks for donations to keep it that way. Its 2027 dates are June 18–19. In 2026 the festival also offered free bus and light-rail passes for each festival day, so you could ride in without paying a fare.
What happened to the Basilica Block Party?
It ended. The Basilica Block Party ran for more than 25 years at the Basilica of Saint Mary in Minneapolis, and its official site says the final Block Party was held in 2024. The Basilica now points visitors to its own events calendar and its restoration campaign, so there is no 2027 edition to plan for.
Do you need your own boat for Boats and Bluegrass?
No. Every full-weekend ticket to Boats and Bluegrass includes boat rentals along with general admission camping and the music at Prairie Island Campground in Winona, on the Mississippi. The festival calls itself family friendly, and kids 16 and under get in free with a paying adult. RVs over 24 feet need a reserved camping pass.
