The grass under the beeches has turned to silver. You only notice when you step off the path: your boot prints come out dark green behind you, a cold bead of dew slides off a fern onto your ankle, and somewhere between the trunks a bassline rolls through a sound system you still can't see.
Lights hang in the canopy. A friend in a velvet hoodie walks ahead with a flask of tea, laughing at nothing, while the lawns of a Palladian country house wait in the dark for morning.
This is Houghton, the house and techno weekend that hides its stages in the woods of the Houghton Hall estate in Norfolk. Dressing for it is a two-act play: bright cotton on the lawns by day, then fleece, velvet and a hooded cloak once the dew comes down.
Houghton 2027 runs Thursday, August 5 to Sunday, August 8 at Houghton Hall, near King's Lynn, per the official festival site. We're Magus and Lylyth Fawn, Los Angeles visionary artists and festival lifers, and this is our lawn-to-woodland wardrobe.
What should you wear to Houghton Festival?
Wear breathable cotton and bold prints for the afternoon, then add fleece joggers or leggings, a velvet hoodie and a hooded cloak at night. Houghton runs in early August in Norfolk, where nights settle around 10–13°C (50–55°F) with heavy dew. Waterproof boots and dry socks keep the woodland walks comfortable.
| Houghton hour | Lawns and woods | Layers |
|---|---|---|
| Afternoon | Sun on the lawns | Cotton tee or tube top, cargo shorts, a backpack |
| Golden hour | The woods light up | Leggings or joggers over the shorts |
| After midnight | Dew on every blade of grass | Velvet hoodie, hooded cloak, waterproof boots |
| Camp morning | A wet tent and a bright sky | The cloak again, plus dry socks from a zip bag |
The official FAQ bans glass, camping stoves, laser pens and personal Bluetooth speakers. Warmth at Houghton comes from what you wear.
Golden afternoons on the lawns
Dress light and bright for the lawns, and carry the night layers with you.

The tee. The Temple of Horus cotton t-shirt ($60, XS–5XL) crosses four translucent lime-and-gold wings around a glowing center on the back, over cobalt and violet circuitry and silver scrollwork. It's 100% cotton at 190 g/m², dye-sublimated so the print won't fade or crack.

The top. The Amethyst Unicorn tube top ($40, 2XS–3XL) wraps a pale unicorn, mane flowing, in a ring of amethyst crystal under violet stars. It's 88% poly / 12% spandex at 210 g/m², off the shoulder, with a double-layered front for long sets.

The shorts. The Mechanical Kraken cargo shorts ($65, S–5XL) wrap a slate-violet biomechanical kraken around your legs, teal eyes glowing and tentacles curling toward a seashell near the hem. It's 190 g/m² poly, with a button-closure waistband and multiple cargo pockets for earplugs, a map and lip balm.
The bag. The Dream Weaver backpack ($55 in M, $60 in L, $65 in XL) raises an ice-blue citadel of spires around a pale, beast-like mask, with blue serpent-dragons curling up each side. A mesh side pocket holds your water bottle; the rest holds the night.
Heavy dew included: dressing for wet grass after midnight
Norfolk nights in early August cool to around 10–13°C, and by the small hours dew beads on the grass, the ferns and every hem.
- Waterproof boots for the woodland paths, with spare socks in a zip bag.
- Cuffed or close-fitting legs stay out of the wet grass; trailing hems wick up dew.
- A dry bag keeps the morning layer ready; a sunny camp morning dries the rest on the guy ropes.

For her, the Solar Eclipse yoga leggings ($70, XS–XL) set a black sun ringed in gold fire at the hip, with teal and orange flourishes trailing down one leg and fine copper flower-of-life linework across the black. They're 4-way stretch microfiber at 225 g/m² with a raised waistband.

For him, the Egyptian Atlantis joggers ($100; $105 in 2XL, $108 in 3XL) stack gold panels on deep navy: a tree of life, an eye in a pyramid, birds, jackal-headed figures and sphinxes guarding the cuffs. Inside is 308 g/m² brushed vegan fleece, and the cuffed legs suit dewy grass. The fit is slim, so order one or two sizes up to wear them over shorts.

The hoodie. The Crimson Fenrir crushed velvet hoodie ($100, S–2XL) puts a black wolf on your chest, amber eyes lit and fangs bared, inside crimson swirls on black velvet: made for a techno set under the trees. It's 240 g/m² crushed velvet with a drawstring hood and a kangaroo pocket (meet the wolf in fiction: The Ribbon and the Wolf).
Dew is the damp half of the night; for the cold half, read how to stay warm at a festival at night, and if the sky opens, our festival rain guide pairs a shell with the warm layers.
Woodland stages and the walk between them
Houghton's stages include the Warehouse, the Pavilion, the Quarry, Giant Steps and Terminus, with sound by d&b audiotechnik. Music runs late into the night, so dress for the first set and the last walk home.
Techno crowds lean dark (our techno party guide explains the code), and a black cloak with one luminous print honors it beautifully.
The cloak. Every Magus Fawn festival cloak shares one build: a micro-mink outer, a fluffy microfiber fleece lining in black or white faux fur (200 g/m²), a double front zipper, heavy drawstrings and four pockets, one a zippered interior stash pocket. Unisex fit, XS–5XL. Kevin, reviewing a Lunar Eclipse cloak in March 2025: "High quality, detailed build and design. Top notch. Super soft and warm."

For her, the Lunar Eclipse women's festival cloak ($250) keeps to black laced with dark teal mandala linework, then lets the sky happen on the back: a copper moon at the base of the hood above a flower-of-life medallion ringed in rose and violet. Hood up, it vanishes between the trees until a laser finds the moon (its story: Two Minutes of Totality).

For him, the Celestial Temple men's cloak ($250) wraps you in an indigo and violet starfield, laced with silver filigree and blue nebula, with small planets glowing at the cuff and hem.

What art will you find at Houghton Festival?
Serious art, inside and outside the woods. Houghton Hall's sculpture park holds permanent works by James Turrell, Richard Long, Rachel Whiteread, Jeppe Hein and more, and the festival runs sculpture garden tours. Recent editions have added installations among the trees and on the lake, so expect light, sculpture and surprises between sets.
A few highlights:
- Richard Long's White Deer Circle, a nod to the estate's famous white fallow deer, according to Houghton Hall.
- In 2025, Chris Levine's laser installation Full Beam lit the lake, and Craig Richards' tall metal structure Trees Go Down, Andrew Goes Up, a tribute to Andrew Weatherall, rose behind the Pavilion, per Plaster Magazine.
Dress like part of the exhibition, and leave the markers at home: marker and paint pens and spray cans are on the prohibited list.
When should you order Houghton outfits for 2027?
Monday, June 14, 2027 is the comfortable date for a US address, and UK readers should go sooner. Every Magus Fawn piece is made to order: 7–11 business days in production, then 6–14 business days in transit. Even at the slow end of both, a June 14 order lands by Wednesday, July 21, about two weeks before Houghton opens.
- Ordering from the UK? International shipping starts at $10. We're a Los Angeles studio, so order well ahead of the US date to give your parcel time to cross the Atlantic.
- Leave space for the hoodie. The Magus Fawn FAQ suggests sizing up on cloaks and hoodies, "sometimes even 2 sizes up to fit extra layers under."
- All sales are final. Unsure between two sizes? Email your measurements to art@magusfawn.com, and we typically reply within 1–2 business days.
- More UK fields this summer? Our Gottwood outfits guide covers Anglesey's barn, forest and lake in June, and the Glastonbury outfits guide covers the farm.

Frequently asked questions
When is Houghton Festival 2027?
Houghton 2027 runs from Thursday, August 5 to Sunday, August 8, 2027, at Houghton Hall in Norfolk, according to the festival's official site. General admission camping is included with a GA ticket, and campers pack up on the Monday after the festival. Gate times, travel details and ticket sales are still to be announced.
Where is Houghton Festival held?
Houghton Festival is held in the grounds of Houghton Hall, near King's Lynn in Norfolk, England, a Palladian country house built in the 1720s for Sir Robert Walpole. The festival sets its stages in the estate's woods and around its lake, with the hall's sculpture park and deer park close by.
Who curates Houghton Festival?
DJ Craig Richards curates Houghton and serves as its creative director. His taste shapes the long, varied house and techno program across the woodland stages, and he has built festival art too, including a 2025 metal structure honoring the late producer Andrew Weatherall. Many sets run for hours, which suits a dressed-for-the-night wardrobe.
Can you bring a speaker to Houghton Festival?
No. Houghton's official FAQ lists all personal Bluetooth speakers among its prohibited items, along with glass, camping stoves and laser pens, and confiscates them at the main gate. The music belongs to the festival's own sound systems, so pack an extra layer and a pair of earplugs in the space instead.
