Rave Leggings and Festival Leggings: Printed Pairs for Dancing, Camp Hikes and Cold Nights

|Magus Fawn

The trail behind camp is only wide enough for one, so the crew climbs it single file, and from the back you can read everybody by their legs.

Molten gold up front. A kaleidoscope of lime and magenta behind it. Then a galaxy so crowded with kittens that the hiker behind keeps stopping to count them. At the top of the ridge the whole festival spreads out below, flags and tents and a stage still asleep, and nobody needs to change before heading down to dance. The same pairs ride the evening sets, and after dark they slip under shorts and a cloak, where they keep working while the art on top takes the spotlight.

Call it the three-shift garment: trail, dance floor, cold night, and one pair of rave leggings covers all three.

We're Magus and Lylyth Fawn, Los Angeles visionary artists, and our leggings wear the same designs as our cloaks and hoodies. Below: the print families, the two cuts, a camp hike and the cold-night stack.

What are rave leggings?

Rave leggings are full-length, stretch-knit leggings printed edge to edge with bold art, made for dancing all night and walking between stages all day. At Magus Fawn, every pair is dye-sublimated, so the art is part of the fabric, and the collection holds 44 listings: 26 women's yoga leggings and 18 men's festival leggings.

Wikipedia describes modern leggings as "elastic close-fitting high-rise garments worn over the legs," and that's the base we build on. The festival twist is the print: a pair covered in art becomes the outfit, and everything else can stay simple.

Our product pages promise the dye-sublimated art "won't fade or crack, ever," which matters on a garment that bends at the knee all night.

What's the difference between men's and women's festival leggings?

Magus Fawn's women's yoga leggings and men's festival leggings differ in fabric blend, fit, waistband, size range and price. The women's pair has more elastane (25% versus 10%) and a raised waistband; the men's pair is a skinny fit with a longer size run. The labels describe the cut, so wear whichever one fits your body.

Here's how the two cuts compare, straight from the product pages:

Women's yoga leggings Men's festival leggings
Price $70 $65
Fabric Microfiber yarn, 75% recycled poly / 25% elastane, 225 g/m² Microfiber, 90% poly / 10% spandex

One perk of the women's pair: at $70, it reaches our free US shipping line on its own. The men's pair ships for $8 alone, or free with anything else in the cart.

Festival leggings by print family

Forty-four pairs is a lot of art, so we sort ours into families. Pick the family that matches your music, then the pair.

Liquid and marbled: poured metal and melted color

Liquid Gold yoga leggings worn with a mustard crop top and tan boots: molten gold and chocolate-brown marbling swirling down both legs

Marbled prints read as pure motion, which makes them the house-and-disco family. The Liquid Gold yoga leggings ($70) pour molten gold, mustard and deep chocolate brown down each leg in long, folding ribbons, as if someone tipped a crucible and let it run. Gold is the alchemist's finish line, the metal every experiment was chasing, and here it catches a low sun like the real thing. Women's cut, XS–XL.

Kaleidoscope and crystal: mirrored geometry

Crystalline Forest yoga leggings worn with a blue-and-pink bra top and black boots on a festival plaza: a mirrored kaleidoscope of lime, magenta, cobalt and tangerine shards

Kaleidoscope prints are built for psytrance, where the visuals mirror and fold in time with the music. The Crystalline Forest yoga leggings ($70) split along the center seam into mirrored shards of lime, magenta, cobalt, tangerine and red, like stained glass seen through a prism. Women's cut, XS–XL (its forest story is The Quartz Trail).

Amethyst Unicorn men's festival leggings worn with a black sleeveless top and boots: violet and lavender light breaking across a midnight-navy leg like the inside of a geode

For the crystal side of the family, the Amethyst Unicorn men's festival leggings ($65) break violet and lavender light across a midnight-navy leg, all facets and glowing veins, like a cracked-open geode. The name promises a unicorn; the leggings deliver the amethyst. Men's cut, XS–3XL.

Temple and sacred geometry: medallions with a story

Temple of Horus yoga leggings from behind, worn with a teal crop top and silver boots at a festival main stage: cobalt and violet with fractal medallions down the legs

Temple prints suit trance and the sunrise stage, where the crowd likes its art with a little ceremony. The Temple of Horus yoga leggings ($70) streak cobalt and electric violet down the leg in fine bands of light, then open a green-gold fractal medallion on each thigh like a pair of carved temple doors. Horus was the falcon-headed sky god of Egypt, and the print keeps that sky-blue majesty. Women's cut, XS–XL.

Forest and fantasy: roses, thorns and knotwork

Forest Wizard Purple yoga leggings from a three-quarter back view under a festival shade structure: deep indigo with sage-green thorned leaves, pink roses and a knotwork band down the outer leg

Forest prints belong at the festivals held among trees, with workshops by day and a stage in a clearing at night. The Forest Wizard Purple yoga leggings ($70) set sage-green thorned leaves and soft pink roses on deep indigo, with a fine scale texture beneath and a band of knotwork running down the outer leg past small round medallions. It reads like a spellbook margin. Women's cut, XS–XL; the Forest Wizard print also comes in Red, Green and Gold colorways.

Cosmic and playful: the print that starts conversations

Cosmic Space Cats men's festival leggings worn with a black tank and boots in a dusty festival field: cat and kitten faces floating through violet, cobalt and amber nebula swirls

One pair in the crew should make strangers laugh and then ask where you got it. The Cosmic Space Cats men's festival leggings ($65) float dozens of cat and kitten faces through violet, cobalt and amber nebula swirls, with small planets drifting between the whiskers. We'd send this pair to a bass night, where a sense of humor is part of the uniform. Men's cut, XS–3XL (read The Cat Who Stole the Closing Set).

Dark prints: for the all-black dance floor

Sacred Grounds men's festival leggings worn with a black-and-grey graphic tank and black boots: charcoal with small rust-brown ovals and round latticed medallions

Techno has a dress code, and it's black. The Sacred Grounds men's festival leggings ($65) pass the door test as near-black charcoal, and only up close do the small rust-brown ovals show, scattered down both legs between a few larger round medallions with a latticed, basket-weave texture. Pair them with a black tank and boots and you're in uniform with a twist. Men's cut, XS–3XL.

Whatever the family, keep the top simple when the legs are loud. A solid tee, a black tank or one of our rave bodysuits gives the print the stage.

Can you wear yoga leggings on a festival hike?

Yes. Yoga leggings suit the camp trail, the ridge walk and the long haul between stages, because four-way stretch moves with every climb and step. Magus Fawn's women's pages add one care tip: "Avoid contact with rough surfaces to prevent pulling white fibers." Choose cleared trails, and cover up for brush and bark.

A few festival-lifer habits for hiking in printed leggings, as general advice:

  • Stay on the path. Brambles and splintery logs snag knits, so cleared ground protects the trail and the print at once.
  • Pack a sit-upon. A sarong on the boulder at the overlook keeps the fabric off the rock.
  • Pull a layer over for scrub. Shorts or rave pants and joggers shield the knit, and shorts are half of the cold-night stack below.

For pockets, fit and comfort over a full day on your feet, our guide to comfortable rave outfits goes deeper.

The cold-night stack: leggings, then shorts, then a cloak

Leggings are the first layer of a cold festival night. Our stack builds from the ankle up: leggings, shorts, a warm top, then a cloak.

Shorts over leggings. It's an old athlete's habit. Wikipedia notes that runners, dancers and exercisers wear leggings with athletic shorts over them, "particularly in cold weather," and that men's leggings were shown on 2011 runways "styled and layered beneath shorts." Shorts add pockets and a second layer at the hips, and the print still shows from the knee down. Loose cargo or cotton shorts work best; our festival shorts guide compares both cuts.

A cloak over everything. When the field turns cold, a long cloak covers the shorts and most of the leggings, so the stack is warm and only your shins stay on show.

Cosmic Knight men's cloak worn open with the hood up over a black tank in front of a mandala stage: silver crescent moons at the shoulders and teal, slate and silver linework like engraved armor

The Cosmic Knight men's cloak ($250) etches teal, slate and silver linework over charcoal like engraved plates of armor, with a silver crescent moon on each shoulder and round medallions across the chest. It has a micro-mink poly outer, a black or white faux fur lining, a double front zipper and four pockets (two interior stash pockets, one zippered, plus two deep side pockets), unisex fit, XS–5XL (read Hold the Line).

Size the stack from the inside out. Leggings sit against your skin, so order the size your tape measure gives you; cloaks and hoodies can go bigger, "sometimes even 2 sizes up to fit extra layers under," as our FAQ puts it. Ordering your pair

  • Your pair is printed for you. Our partners print and sew each pair after you order: 7–11 business days in production, then 6–14 business days on the way to your door. Order a month and a week ahead of the gates and the pair arrives with room to spare.
  • A tape measure settles it. Sales are final (EU customers have a 14-day cooling-off period, unused with tags on). Torn between two sizes? Send your hip and waist numbers to art@magusfawn.com, and Lylyth replies with the one that fits.
  • Washing: cold machine cycle with like colors, no bleach; hang the pair to dry (best) or tumble low; no iron, no dry cleaning.

Pick your pair: women's leggings · men's leggings · men's shorts · men's cloaks · women's cloaks

Find the print that sounds like your music, hike it up the ridge in the morning, and wear it under the stars when the cloak comes out.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between leggings and yoga pants?

Yoga pants began as studio wear; Wikipedia dates the first pairs to 1998 at Lululemon and lists boot-cut and flared styles with a flat waistband. Leggings fit close all the way to the ankle. Magus Fawn's yoga leggings take the legging shape and add a raised waistband and four-way stretch for dancing.

Where did leggings come from?

Leggings are centuries old. Wikipedia traces them through the hose men wore in Renaissance Europe, the trews of the Scottish Highlands and buckskin leggings worn by some Native Americans. Soldiers later wore them to keep "dirt, sand, and mud" out of their shoes, and Lycra and the 1970s and 1980s aerobics boom carried them into streetwear.

How do you keep leggings from snagging at a festival?

Keep them away from rough surfaces. Sit on a sarong rather than bare logs or rock, clip carabiners and hook-and-loop straps away from your legs, and pull shorts on top for brushy trails. On laundry day, keep them apart from zippers and hook-and-loop fasteners in the machine, so the knit stays smooth all season.
