Outside Lands Outfits 2027: What to Wear in Golden Gate Park's Fog

|Magus Fawn

A soft gray tide drifts in from the ocean side of the park and settles into the cypress around the Polo Field, blurring the tops of the pylons that frame the Lands End stage. In the eucalyptus groves of McLaren Pass, a dancer pulls her hood up mid-chorus without missing a step. By the main gate in Lindley Meadow, Ranger Dave's statue shows off this year's fit and pays the weather no mind.

San Franciscans call the fog Karl, a nickname that, per KQED, began with the @KarlTheFog Twitter account in August 2010. At Outside Lands, three days of music, food and art in Golden Gate Park, Karl is practically on the bill: the festival's own news ticker reads "Fog expected. Vibes guaranteed."

So what to wear to Outside Lands is really two outfits worn as one: a bright print for the sunny stretches and a warm, hooded layer for the gray. Outside Lands 2027 runs August 6–8, according to the official homepage. We're Magus and Lylyth Fawn, two Los Angeles digital artists whose visionary art covers every piece in this guide, and this is how we'd dress for the park.

What should you wear to Outside Lands?

Wear a bright, breathable outfit you can dance in at noon, and carry a hooded warm layer from the first set. Golden Gate Park in August swings from sunny to gray in an afternoon, so Magus Fawn's plan pairs a velvet tee or bodysuit and leggings or cargo shorts with a crushed velvet hoodie and a faux-fur-lined festival cloak.

Park timeline Sky over the park What goes on
Gates open (11 a.m. in 2026) Sun or soft gray, damp grass Bodysuit or velvet tee, leggings or cargo shorts
Afternoon sets Typical August high near 68°F (20°C) Snapback, sunglasses, the day print
The fog arrives Ocean air, silver light Crushed velvet hoodie
Last set (10 p.m. in 2026) Typical low near 56°F (13°C) Hooded cloak, zipped
The ride home Fog and breeze Cloak stays on

Hours shown are 2026's, per the official FAQ.

How cold are Outside Lands evenings in Golden Gate Park?

Cool, and cooler once the fog settles in. NOAA's 1991–2020 normals for the downtown San Francisco station put an August afternoon near 68°F (20°C) and the night near 56°F (13°C). Golden Gate Park sits closer to the Pacific, so plan for a hood by the evening sets.

August rain barely registers in the same normals, well under a tenth of an inch, which suits a festival that lists umbrellas among the items to leave home. When Karl settles in for the evening, our cold-night layering guide stacks the pieces in order.

Woman in the Lunar Eclipse women's festival cloak, hood up, worn open before a festival stage hung with banners

The fog layer. The Lunar Eclipse women's festival cloak ($250) hangs a copper-orange moon above a pale flower-of-life disc ringed in blue and violet light, with magenta and red mandala circles spinning out across the sleeves and hood over fine silver linework. Its moonlit tale is Two Minutes of Totality.

Underneath the art sits our standard cloak build: a micro-mink outer, an ultra-soft fluffy microfiber fleece lining in black or white faux fur (200 g/m²), a double front zipper, heavy drawstrings and four pockets, one of them zippered. Unisex fit, XS–5XL. Kevin, reviewing a Lunar Eclipse cloak in March 2025: "High quality, detailed build and design. Top notch. Super soft and warm."

Man on a festival path in the Mechanical Kraken crushed velvet pullover hoodie: mirrored teal, silver and lavender tentacles on midnight navy

The in-between layer. The fog comes off the Pacific, so meet it with a sea creature. The Mechanical Kraken crushed velvet pullover hoodie ($100, S–2XL) coils teal, silver and lavender tentacles in mirrored symmetry over midnight navy. It's 240 g/m² crushed velvet with a drawstring hood and a kangaroo pocket (the kraken's own voyage: The Lights Under the Wake).

Lands End to SOMA: a print for every stage

Outside Lands spreads its stages across the park's meadows and groves. The experiences page places Lands End on the Polo Field, Duboce Triangle in the eucalyptus of McLaren Pass, and SOMA in Marx Meadow, "a three-day open-air dance floor" for house and techno. Different corners, one rule: wear something that reads beautifully in both sun and gray.

Woman before a rainbow-rayed festival stage in Forest Wizard Gold yoga leggings: olive and bronze scales with silver-green leaves and small pink blooms

For the groves. The Forest Wizard Gold women's yoga leggings ($70, XS–XL) layer olive and bronze in a scale-like texture, with pale silver-green leaf sprays and small pink and lime blooms, a woodland print made for an afternoon under the eucalyptus. They're 75% recycled poly and 25% elastane at 225 g/m², with four-way stretch and a raised waistband. The wizard's own tale is The Trader in the Wizard Cloak.

Back of the Electric Dragonscape crushed velvet t-shirt at a festival: a horned silver dragon in cobalt and sapphire scales with spiked silver wings

For the main field. The Electric Dragonscape crushed velvet t-shirt ($60 in crushed velvet or cotton, $50 in poly jersey; XS–5XL) sets a horned silver dragon at the center of the back, wrapped in cobalt and sapphire scales and spiked silver wings, with a glowing violet-blue gem below and a star medallion above. It's short-sleeved with a crew neck, in 240 g/m² crushed velvet, 180 g/m² jersey or 190 g/m² cotton.

Woman at a festival in the Purple Marble V-neck bodysuit: lavender, violet, white and plum marbled swirls with a plunging neckline

For SOMA. The Purple Marble V-neck bodysuit ($55, XS–2XL) pours lavender, violet, white and deep plum into one marbled swirl, like paint folding over itself. It has a plunging V-neck front, an open back and a snap closure, in 95/5 microfiber at 180 g/m².

Does Outside Lands have a dress code?

Outside Lands has no formal dress code, so wear whatever makes you feel like art. The official FAQ's list of items to leave home does include a few clothing notes: no spiked jewelry or clothing, no Native American headdresses, and no threatening signs or apparel. Totems and flags stay home too, while glow bracelets and necklaces are welcome.

Let a bold hat do the signaling instead.

Woman with silver face gems in the Alien Mycelium Purple snapback: a violet crown in black linework with a small alien head at the peak

For finding your crew. The Alien Mycelium Purple snapback ($40) etches a violet crown in black linework, with a small alien head at the front peak and mushroom caps curling across the back panels, over a black brim with a fine dot texture. It's 150 g/m² poly with a plastic adjustable band, one size fits most.

Pockets, small bags and the 6 × 8 × 3 rule

Outside Lands says it would "prefer that fans come bag free." Clear plastic, vinyl or PVC bags and backpacks are allowed, as are small bags, fanny packs and purses up to 6 × 8 × 3 inches in any material, plus empty hydration packs under 2.5 liters. Non-clear drawstring backpacks stay home, and 8 × 12 × 18-inch lockers with phone chargers can be reserved in the GA, GA+ and VIP areas.

The festival is cashless, and water refill stations run throughout the grounds, per the sustainability page, so a card, a phone and an empty bottle cover the day, and pockets carry them: the cloak has four.

Golden Phoenix cargo shorts worn at a festival: gold filigree rings and arches on black with teal glow

For the essentials. The Golden Phoenix cargo shorts ($65, S–5XL) spin gold filigree rings and arches across black, glowing teal and green at the edges, with violet spires rising near the hem. They're a denim-like 100% poly at 190 g/m², with a button-closure waistband and multiple cargo pockets for your card, phone and earplugs.

Frequently asked questions

When is Outside Lands 2027?

Outside Lands 2027 is set for August 6–8, 2027, in San Francisco's Golden Gate Park, according to the festival's official homepage. The lineup and daily hours come later; in 2026, gates opened at 11 a.m. and music ran from noon to 10 p.m. The early-bird 3-Day tickets for 2027 have already sold out.

What is SOMA at Outside Lands?

SOMA is the festival's house and techno stage. The official experiences page says it turns Marx Meadow into "a three-day open-air dance floor," and the festival history page dates its debut to the 2021 Halloween Edition. Dress for hours of dancing: a breathable velvet piece, comfortable shoes and a hood for when the fog drifts over.

What happens if you leave Outside Lands early?

Your wristband admits you through the gates once each day, according to the official FAQ, so leaving usually ends your day in the park. For an emergency or serious matter, speak with a Supervisor at any entrance before you go to be scanned out and come back the same day. Wear every layer you'll want until the last set.

Can you bring a stroller to Outside Lands?

Strollers stay home. The official FAQ says strollers, wagons and carts aren't permitted because of the rough terrain in Golden Gate Park, which the accessibility page describes as sandy paths, dirt roads and grassy fields. Outside Lands is an all-ages event, and children under 2 don't need a wristband, so a baby carrier is the way to go.

Can you sleep in Golden Gate Park during Outside Lands?

Outside Lands isn't a camping festival. The official FAQ says you can't sleep in Golden Gate Park or in your vehicle, with no exceptions, and there's no general event parking. Book a room in the city, then ride Muni, BART or the festival's shuttle from the Civic Center, keeping the cloak zipped for the trip back.
