A pink flamingo float turns slow circles in the Eel River current. Up on the gravel bar, a velvet polo dries over a camp chair, and in the meadow a tug-of-war team digs in with tremendous style. The redwoods stand over all of it, older than every record on site.
Dirtybird Campout outfits follow the weekend's own loop: river at noon, dance floors after dark, then a cool walk back to your tent through the trees.
Dirtybird Campout x Northern Nights 2027 runs Thursday, July 15 to Sunday, July 18 at Cook's Valley Campground in Piercy, California, according to the official FAQ. We're Magus and Lylyth Fawn, Los Angeles visionary artists who print our art onto festival clothes, and this is the bag we'd pack for the redwoods.
What should you wear to Dirtybird Campout?
Pack for a hot river afternoon and a cool redwood night. Magus Fawn's Dirtybird Campout plan builds around a faux-fur-lined festival cloak for nights the festival says reach the low 50s, then adds a swimsuit and bucket hat for the river, a playful velvet party shirt for the meadow and a hooded blanket for camp mornings.
| Where the weekend takes you | What the festival describes | Pack this |
|---|---|---|
| Grove, Bunker and Silent Disco | Music through the night, low-50s nights | Hooded cloak |
| River Stage and Bird Bath | Daytime sets on the Eel River | Swimsuit, bucket hat |
| The meadow | Field-day games and tug-of-war | Velvet polo |
| Your tent on the river bar | Free camping steps from the river | Hooded blanket |

The investment piece. We pack the cloak first, because the redwoods save their best hours for after dark. Each Magus Fawn cloak shares one build: a micro-mink poly outer, an ultra-soft fluffy microfiber fleece lining in black or white faux fur (listed at 200 g/m²), a double front zipper, heavy drawstrings and four pockets, two of them interior stash pockets. Unisex fit, XS–5XL, $250.
The Forest Wizard men's festival cloak belongs among the big trees. Silver-grey sunbursts bloom at the shoulders and hem, and from a medallion at the upper back two chains descend past pale horned skulls garlanded with pink roses and green leaves. Hood up, zipped to the chin, it walks you from the last Main Stage set to the sunrise Silent Disco.
Dressing for the Dirtybird sound
Dirtybird began as a San Francisco record label, founded in 2005 by Claude VonStroke, who calls its brand of house "tech funk," according to Wikipedia's Dirtybird Records entry. The first annual Dirtybird Campout followed in 2015.
That's the dress code in a sentence: groove first, joke second, glamour third, in a meadow of grown adults wearing feathers. Our house music festival outfits guide places tech house between the disco day party and the warehouse after-hours.

The party shirt. A festival named for a bird deserves a shirt with wings. The Golden Phoenix crushed velvet polo ($65, S–5XL) spreads a phoenix across the chest in bronze-gold filigree, its feathers shading into teal, cobalt and violet around a glowing green medallion, all on black. It's 240 g/m² crushed velvet (95% poly, 5% spandex), collared with short sleeves, ready for a tug-of-war team photo.
What do you wear to the River Stage at Dirtybird Campout?
Wear a swimsuit, a brim and river-safe sunscreen. The festival describes the River Stage as daytime sets on the banks of the Eel River, "with swimming and dancing in the sun," and the Bird Bath as an open-air dance floor on the river. Dress so you can wade, dance and sit on warm stones between sets.
The official FAQ asks for "eco-friendly and biodegradable sunscreens, soaps, shampoos and body products" to keep the river clean. Save the scrubbing for the hot showers sold onsite: the Do's & Don'ts say not to bathe in the river.

The river suit. The Liquified Abyss one-piece swimsuit ($65; $68 in 2XL, $69 in 3XL) looks like paint poured onto moving water: marbled ribbons of magenta, coral, tangerine, teal and deep indigo, flecked with gold. It's 225 g/m² four-way stretch (75% recycled poly, 25% elastane) with a double-layer front, a scoop neck and a low scoop back, XS–3XL.

The feathered brim. The official packing list asks for "your hat, sunglasses and any other sun protection." The Feathery Fractal bucket hat ($50) answers in plumage: teal fractal fronds curl around indigo and violet spirals that look like ruffled feathers, over a black underbrim traced with a white flower-of-life lattice. It's 100% poly at 275 g/m², in XS, S/M and L/XL. Colleen, on the hat's page (8.7.23): "Made a great gift. He loved it !"
How chilly do the redwood nights get at Dirtybird Campout?
Cool enough for real layers. The official FAQ recommends "bringing layers as temperatures drop to low 50s at nights," and its packing advice adds that it might be hot and it could be cold. Under the redwoods the late sets run long, so plan on a warm layer from the last Main Stage set to sunrise.
Main Stage runs until 2 a.m. on Friday and Saturday and midnight on Sunday, while the Grove and the Bunker go "throughout the night" and the Silent Disco runs to sunrise. Rocky ground and dim paths call for closed shoes and a headlamp.

The second cloak. The Grove glows inside a stand of redwoods, and the Crystalline Forest women's festival cloak ($250) answers it in stained glass: faceted crystal shards in lime green, gold, magenta, violet and cobalt meet in a mirrored pattern at the zipper. Same faux-fur-lined build as the Forest Wizard. A cloak and a redwood night also star in Same Channel, our redwood love story, and our guide to staying warm after dark builds the full night stack.
The campsite throne. Mornings on the river bar belong to the Egyptian Atlantis hooded blanket ($150), an oversized one-size pullover with a cat-ear hood. Its art fits a forest weekend: a golden tree in a round medallion at the chest, seated jackals on either side and reclining sphinxes along the hem, all gold on midnight blue. It's 300 g/m² poly fleece with a front quarter zip and an oversized front pocket, made for camp-chair mornings while the valley warms up.
Campout rules that change the packing list
These official rules reach straight into your bag:
- 18+ with ID. The festival is strictly 18+ to attend and 21+ to drink.
- No glass anywhere. Bring a refillable bottle for the free drinking water.
- No burning of any kind. That includes campfires, fireworks and fire dancing; small propane camp stoves are fine.
- Aerosols stay home. Staff confiscate aerosol cans, so pack lotion sunscreen.
- Re-entry runs on gate hours. Wristband holders can leave and come back during official gate hours; car, 4x4 and RV camping vehicles get one entry only.
- Pack it in, pack it out. Campers leave by noon on Monday, July 19.
Free tent camping comes with every admission ticket, mostly along the river bar "steps from the Eel River," per the camping page.
Our studio clock for a July campout
Mark Tuesday, May 25, 2027 on the camp calendar. Each piece is printed and sewn after you order: up to 11 business days in production, then up to 14 in transit. Even with both windows maxed out, a May 25 order reaches a US address by Thursday, July 1, a fortnight ahead of opening day.
- US shipping. Free from $70, so the polo and the bucket hat together ship free.
- Sizing for the river and the Grove. Sales are final, so email your measurements to art@magusfawn.com; we typically answer within 1–2 business days.
- Room under the cloak. For a cloak over a hoodie, the Magus Fawn FAQ suggests going up, "sometimes even 2 sizes up to fit extra layers under."
- More California. Our California music festivals guide maps the rest of the year.
