A festival story. The characters are imagined; the clothes are real.
One phone, one Saturday in October. Everything below lit up Cel's screen at a one-day festival in an Austin city park: live oaks, lawns trampled to gold dust, the skyline across the lake, and bass and house from noon to ten.
FRONT LEFT · 6 people
Desta · 7:02 a.m.
Year ten, kids. The sky's doing the pink thing over the lake. I'm on a double, so somebody send me the bass.
Bix · 7:03 a.m.
who holds the phone for the photo if you're not there
Desta · 7:04 a.m.

OPERATION LONG ARM · 5 people (Desta is not in this one)
Nkechi · 7:41 a.m.
Okay. Desta's ticket is on the resale site. Listed at 2:14 this morning. The seller photo is Tamale in a bandana.
Cel · 7:43 a.m.
The store let half the floor go in August. That's nine weeks of "double shifts."
Ludo · 7:44 a.m.
He walked to brunch Sunday. Three miles. Said he "likes walking now."
Moe · 7:58 a.m.

Bix · 7:59 a.m.

Cel · 8:01 a.m.
That's the plan. Moe sends it at six, when his "shift" ends. Not sooner, or he'll sell it again for the light bill. Then the Hill Stage, under the oak, Nightjar's first track. Photo number ten.
Festival app · 11:00 a.m. Gates are open! Refill stations at every stage. 71° and sunny. Find your people.

The shirt from Cel's car

Magus Fawn's Fractal Bubble design repeats one small fractal rosette across the whole garment, so it reads as rich texture from across a lawn and opens into pattern at arm's length. Desta's shirt is the Brown Fractal Bubble crushed velvet t-shirt ($60): bronze velvet that shifts from tobacco to gold as you move, easy to spot in a crowd and easy to hand over in one pull. Moe's beacon is the Temple of Sound snapback ($40): a crowned figure in a sunburst halo before a Flower of Life, a smaller seated figure at her feet, and black speaker towers and slate-blue winged dragons on either side, a festival hat with the bass tent printed right on it.
- Velvet tee: crushed velvet, 240 g/m², dye-sublimated so the colors won't fade and the image won't crack · XS–5XL (the listing also offers poly and cotton versions).
- Snapback: one size · the Temple of Sound art across the front panels, with more speaker cones around the back.
Everything is made to order (7–11 business days of production), and US orders of $70 or more ship free. More for your crew's next day festival: crushed velvet t-shirts · snapback hats
What do you wear to a festival in Austin in October?
Dress for a warm, sunny afternoon and a mild night. Austin in October often reaches the upper 70s or low 80s °F by day and cools into the 50s or 60s after dark. Wear a breathable tee or tank, shorts or light cargo pants, closed shoes for ten hours on your feet, a hat and one light layer for later.
- Bass and house in one outfit: bass crowds lean into statement hats, bold printed tees, joggers and cargo; house floors bring color, velvet and anything that moves well. A printed velvet tee with a snapback works in both tents.
- Dust is part of the day: big park lawns turn to powder by late afternoon in a dry fall, so pack a bandana and wear shoes that can take a coat of it.
- Plan for your phone: pick a meeting spot that doesn't need signal (front left of a stage, a big tree, a hat held high), turn on schedule alerts in the festival app, and set up a backup login for your ticket before you leave home.
- Carry light: a small bag across your chest keeps your phone, ID and refillable bottle in front of you during the drop.
For more city festivals with bass and house on the bill, Breakaway Music Festival tours stadium grounds across the US and stops in Houston on Nov 13–14, CRSSD Festival brings house and techno to San Diego's Waterfront Park each late September with nights of 55–62°F, and Escape Halloween fills the NOS Events Center in San Bernardino with bass and techno in late October, when nights run 50–55°F.
Frequently asked questions
What happens if you lose your phone with your festival ticket on it?
Report it at the festival's lost and found or guest services right away, with details like the case, stickers and lock screen. Most mobile tickets live in an account you can open on a friend's phone, but login codes may go to the lost device, so add a backup email or number before the show. Bring photo ID.
Why do festival set times change on the day of the show?
Set times shift when an artist's travel changes, a stage runs behind schedule, production needs extra time between acts, or organizers rebalance crowds across stages. Turn on push alerts in the festival app, check the schedule board by each stage in the afternoon, and agree on a meeting spot so your crew can regroup fast.
Can you see the Austin bats in October?
Usually, yes, especially early in the month. Austin's colony of Mexican free-tailed bats lives under the Congress Avenue Bridge from about March into the fall and heads south to Mexico between late October and mid-November. Near sunset, they stream out over Lady Bird Lake in a long dark ribbon. Watch from the bridge or lakeshore, and arrive early.
