Apogaea Outfits 2027: What to Wear to Colorado's Mountain Burn

|Magus Fawn

A pink marabou boa loops around a stranger's shoulders and then, with a grin, around yours. Down the dirt road a dome glows from inside, and a hula hoop drifts past a string of pink lanterns.

The grass smells of sunscreen and warm dust, and the sky over the hills can't decide between dazzling blue and a hailstorm, so it auditions both before dinner.

That's the heart of what to wear to Apogaea, Colorado's regional burn: dress for a mountain that changes its mind. The official survival guide puts June days at 85–90°F "with full sun" and nighttime lows at 50–55°F, then sums up the forecast in one breath: "The sun is bright, rain is wet, snow is cold."

Apogaea 2027 dates and location are TBA. The 2026 edition, themed "Mythos & Mechanica," ran June 10–14 near Valdez, about 3.5 hours south of Denver, according to the official Apogaea site, and organizers are scouting land for future years. We're Magus and Lylyth Fawn, Los Angeles visionary artists and festival lifers, and these are our Apogaea outfits for the mountain.

Apogaea 2027 in four layers: the plan for one mountain

Apogaea is Colorado's official Burning Man Regional Event, a Wednesday-to-Sunday gathering of about 2,000 people in early summer, and the wardrobe covers a 30-degree swing. Our plan: cotton and a wide brim by day, costume at golden hour, then a hoodie, fleece and a faux-fur-lined cloak after dark.

Mountain hour Sky report Layer up with
Midday 85–90°F, full sun Cotton tee or bodysuit, cotton shorts, bucket hat
Afternoon weather Rain, hail, even snow A shell from home over everything
After dark 50–55°F Cotton hoodie, fleece joggers, hooded cloak
Camp morning Quiet hours until 10 a.m. Hooded blanket and something hot

Bring everything you'll need: Apogaea follows the Ten Principles, and the survival guide leaves vending off the menu. Costume, though, is a sacred duty: "You can't be too costumed, too decorated, too body-painted, too weird, too fabulous, or too beautiful!"

How do you dress for the Colorado sun at Apogaea?

Cover up with a brim, breathable cotton and sunscreen, then drink more water than feels reasonable. Apogaea's survival guide notes that the Colorado sun is more intense and "you burn more easily here," and it asks for 1.5 gallons of water per person per day. Magus Fawn's daytime kit: a bucket hat, a cotton tee or bodysuit, and cotton shorts.

Festival-goer from behind in the Feathery Fractal bucket hat, violet feathery swirls over teal fractal lace: a sun hat for Apogaea

The hat. The Feathery Fractal bucket hat ($50) curls violet and indigo plumes over teal-green fractal lace, a peacock's tail under a microscope. It's 100% poly at 275 g/m² in XS, S/M and L/XL, the wide brim the survival guide asks for.

Man at a sunny festival stage in the Liquid Fire cotton t-shirt, molten orange, scarlet, gold, violet and lime marbling: a cotton tee for Apogaea afternoons

For him, the Liquid Fire cotton t-shirt ($60, XS–5XL) pours molten marbling of orange, scarlet, gold, violet, cobalt and lime across the chest: the only fire a no-ember burn will ever need. It's 100% cotton at 190 g/m², dye-sublimated so the colors won't fade or crack.

Back view of the Mystical Egypt cami bodysuit at a festival, rainbow chakra orbs rising to a pharaoh's face on black

For her, the Mystical Egypt cami bodysuit ($55, XS–2XL) stacks a column of rainbow chakra orbs up the spine to a pharaoh's face, framed in gold linework with an Eye of Horus on black. Black spaghetti straps, a skinny fit, and pure mythos.

Cosmic Knight unisex cotton shorts in slate and silver, a hooded knight under a gear-like halo beside a twelve-pointed star

The shorts. The Cosmic Knight unisex cotton shorts ($65, S–5XL) armor one leg with a faceless hooded knight under a gear-like halo and scatter a twelve-pointed silver star, a ringed planet and crystal shards across the other, in slate, steel blue and silver. They're 100% cotton at 245 g/m² with an elastic waistband, side pockets and a back pocket for earplugs and lip balm (the story behind the design: Hold the Line).

Can you wear feathers or glitter to Apogaea?

Leave both at home. Apogaea's survival guide lists "Feathers of any kind" among the things not to bring, because they shed and become MOOP, and it adds glitter, sequins and anything else that breaks up and blows away. Its friendly swap: "Try marabou instead." Bold prints and solid trims carry all the sparkle you need.

Apogaea runs as a Leave No Trace event, so whatever you bring goes home with you. Printed clothing shines here: the color is dyed into the fiber, and nothing drifts into the meadow. The plumes on that Feathery Fractal hat are the only feathers on the mountain that stay put.

The 2027 theme is still TBA, but 2026's Mythos & Mechanica shows how Apogaea plays: ancient myth, machines, and the fun in between. The Mystical Egypt bodysuit leans myth, the Cosmic Knight shorts lean machine.

After dark on the mountain: hoodie, fleece and a hooded cloak

Cool enough to change your whole outfit. Apogaea's survival guide lists nighttime lows of 50–55°F after 85–90°F afternoons, a swing of 30 degrees or more, and it keeps snow on the list of mountain possibilities. Plan on a cotton hoodie and fleece joggers by sunset, plus a faux-fur-lined hooded cloak for the late sets.

The sound policy sets quiet hours from 4 to 10 a.m., though designated large sound camps may play through sunrise for the devoted few. More layering ideas live in our guide to how to stay warm at a festival at night, and our festival rain guide handles afternoon storms.

Alien Dimensions cotton pullover hoodie, a crowd of big-eyed alien heads in lavender, sky blue and violet laced with white flower-of-life geometry: a cotton hoodie for cool mountain nights

The hoodie. The Alien Dimensions cotton pullover hoodie ($100, XS–6XL) fills every inch with big-eyed alien heads in lavender, sky blue, violet and cream, threaded with white flower-of-life geometry: a whole crowd of visitors for the walk to the sound camps. It's 100% cotton at 310 g/m² with a kangaroo pocket; expect 3–5% shrinkage after the first wash, so wash it cold and air dry.

Forest Wizard Red fleece joggers laid flat, an antlered stag skull with gold chains and roses over crimson swirls

The joggers. The Forest Wizard Red joggers ($100; $105 in 2XL, $108 in 3XL) drape an antlered stag skull in gold chains, pink and red roses and a crystal, over crimson swirls, a mauve honeycomb waist and a Celtic knot band down the leg. Inside is 308 g/m² brushed vegan fleece, with cuffed legs and side pockets. The fit is slim, so order one or two sizes up to pull them over shorts.

Man at a festival in the Green Shroom Flower of Life men's festival cloak, hood up, neon green and violet: a hooded cloak for cold nights

The cloak. The Green Shroom Flower of Life men's festival cloak ($250) grows a mushroom on a long, winding green stem up the spine toward a flower-of-life symbol, with green orbs, spiky fractal clusters and a spiral medallion at the hem, neon green on violet and navy: a forest at midnight, glowing (read the forest story behind the design: Lost on Purpose). The build: a micro-mink outer, a fluffy microfiber fleece lining in black or white faux fur (200 g/m²), a double front zipper and four pockets, two deep side pockets plus two interior stash pockets, one zippered. Unisex fit, XS–5XL. A buyer reviewing a Madriax cloak in March 2023: "I was in the snow accidentally and stayed incredibly warm thanks to this cloak! Has pockets too!"

Back view of the Cosmic Cross Silver hooded blanket, silver and lavender filigree around a pale orb: a wearable blanket

The camp morning. The Cosmic Cross Silver hooded blanket ($150) covers its back in silver, pewter and lavender filigree around a pale central orb, as fine as frost on a window. It's an oversized pullover in 300 g/m² fleece with a cat-ear hood, a front quarter zip and an oversized front pocket, one size (4XL): the uniform for the slow walk to the camp kitchen.

A fire note: Apogaea's fire policy never permits ember-producing fires and asks fire performers to wear natural fibers, so keep cloaks and fleece well back from any flame effect. For a mountain-burn storm told as a love story, read Under One Hood.

Frequently asked questions

When is Apogaea 2027?

Apogaea 2027 dates are TBA. The official site lists only the 2026 event, "Mythos & Mechanica," which ran June 10–14, 2026. The festival describes itself as a Wednesday-to-Sunday gathering in early summer, so a June 2027 date fits the pattern. Watch apogaea.com and its mailing list for the announcement.

Where is Apogaea held?

The 2026 edition was held near Valdez, Colorado, about 3.5 hours south of Denver and 45 minutes from Raton, New Mexico, according to the official venue page. Print your directions before you go, since cell service and GPS come and go. Organizers are seeking land for future years, possibly closer to Denver, so confirm the 2027 location.

Do kids need a ticket for Apogaea?

Yes, though a child's ticket is free. Apogaea's ticket page says children 12 and under attend free but must be registered with a free ticket, and everyone 13 and up needs a paid ticket, with a youth ticket for ages 13–17. A parent or guardian signs the liability waiver for anyone under 18.

Does Apogaea burn its effigy?

Usually not. Apogaea's Temple and Effigy page explains that its current site is much drier than past locations, so ember-producing fires aren't allowed and the Effigy and Temple typically stay unburned. Organizers encourage creative alternatives: the 2016 burn used hot air balloon burners to heat three metal hearts until they glowed red-hot.
