Lollapalooza Outfits 2027: What to Wear in Grant Park (Heat, Storms and Lakefront Nights)

|Magus Fawn

Mist from a handheld fan drifts over the entry line and beads on a row of sunglasses. Above the trees, the Chicago skyline wavers in the heat. Somewhere ahead, a woman in a navy kimono printed with gold eyes holds up an empty water bottle like a ticket, ready for the first refill station inside the gates.

What to wear to Lollapalooza comes down to three things Grant Park hands you over four days: August sun on open lawns, a summer storm the festival plans for, and a breezy walk along the lake after the headliner.

Lollapalooza fills "historic Grant Park on the shores of Lake Michigan," says the official site. Dates for 2027 are TBA; the 2026 edition ran Thursday, July 30 to Sunday, August 2, with entrances open 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., according to the festival's help center. We're Magus and Lylyth Fawn, two Los Angeles digital artists who put our visionary art on festival clothes, and this is how we'd dress for Chicago.

What should you wear to Lollapalooza?

Wear bright, breathable pieces that handle August heat, then carry one light layer for the evening. Lollapalooza is a city-park festival on open lawns beside Lake Michigan, so our plan pairs a crushed velvet tank or a swimsuit with pocketed shorts, a brim for the sun, broken-in sneakers, and a kimono or cotton tee folded small.

Lolla checkpoint Weather and logistics Our pick
The entry line Bag search, sun on the pavement Snapback, empty water bottle
Afternoon on the lawns Normal highs near 84°F (29°C) Velvet tank or swimsuit, cargo shorts
Clouds stacking up on the radar Ponchos sold at the Lolla Bodega Poncho over the print
Headliner and the walk out Normal lows near 66°F (19°C) Chiffon kimono or cotton tee

Man in the Galactic Alien Oracle crushed velvet tank before festival flags: a slender alien figure in violet and lavender biomechanical filigree, a Lollapalooza outfit idea

The day statement. The Galactic Alien Oracle crushed velvet tank ($60, S–5XL) sets a slender alien figure at the center of the chest, wrapped in symmetrical biomechanical filigree, orbs and swirls of violet, lavender and periwinkle. Crushed velvet catches stage light from every angle. It's 240 g/m² (95% poly, 5% spandex), sleeveless with a crew neck and a regular fit. The oracle's own tale is The Oracle and the Last Ferry.

How hot is Chicago during Lollapalooza?

Hot enough for tanks and swimsuits. The National Weather Service's 1991–2020 normals for Chicago, measured at O'Hare, put the turn of July into August near 84°F (29°C) for highs and 66°F (19°C) for lows. Plan on full sun across open lawns all afternoon, with some days running hotter than the average.

The same NWS Chicago normals count 4.25 inches of rain in an average August, which is why the next section exists. For the heat itself, the festival's safety page lists Hydration Stations with "free, cool, filtered water," cooling stations around the venue, and cooling buses by the medical tents on Balbo and Jackson. Bring an empty refillable bottle. Non-aerosol sunscreen of 3.4 ounces or less is allowed, and so is a personal misting fan, as long as its bottle is empty at the gate.

Woman before a festival stage in the Madriax Blue one-piece swimsuit: a cobalt mandala over one hip ringed with teal orbs, on a violet starry honeycomb

For the hottest afternoon. The Madriax Blue one-piece swimsuit ($65; $68 in 2XL, $69 in 3XL) blooms a cobalt mandala over one hip, ringed with teal and silver orbs, across a violet honeycomb grid flecked with stars. Worn as a festival bodysuit under shorts or the kimono, it's 225 g/m² four-way stretch (75% recycled poly, 25% elastane) with a double-layer front, a scoop neck and a low scoop back, XS–3XL.

Woman with face gems before a festival stage in the Mystic Eye Gold snapback: an eye atop gold filigree around a pale-blue flower of life, on teal and orange nebula

For the brim. The festival itself calls "sunscreen lotion, hats, and sunglasses" key. The Mystic Eye Gold snapback ($40) answers with an eye at the peak of gold filigree arcs that circle a pale-blue flower-of-life orb, set on nebula swirls of teal, blue and orange, above a black brim etched with a fine flower-of-life lattice. It's 150 g/m² poly with an adjustable snapback closure, one size fits most.

What happens at Lollapalooza when a storm rolls in?

The festival watches the radar and runs an evacuation plan. Its safety page says an evacuation doesn't necessarily cancel the day: fans shelter in three nearby garages, Grant Park North, Grant Park South and Millennium Lakeside, while updates and adjusted set times arrive through the Lolla app, the website and the festival's social channels.

The Chicago Sun-Times recalls that organizers cleared Grant Park on Day 1 in 2017, and that a 2012 storm paused the festival for about three hours. Turn on push notifications before you arrive, and know your nearest garage.

Dress for it the festival's way. Umbrellas are on the prohibited list, so the official advice is to "keep an eye on the radar" and pack "rain boots, ponchos, etc." A forgotten poncho can be bought at the Lolla Bodega. Crushed velvet and chiffon are for dancing, so let a poncho take the rain and keep something dry in your bag. Our festival rain guide covers fabrics, shoes and drying out.

Back of the Cosmic Knight cotton tee at a festival: a silver-blue sunburst around a glowing arch above a column of armor-like panels on deep navy

The dry change. The Cosmic Knight cotton tee ($60, XS–5XL) folds flat into a clear bag and comes out after the shower. A silver-blue sunburst radiates around a glowing arch across the shoulder blades, and a symmetrical column of plated, armor-like panels and small medallions runs down the back on deep navy. It's 100% cotton at 190 g/m², short-sleeved with a crew neck. The design's story is Hold the Line, our cave rave tale.

Grant Park's gate list, read with an outfit in mind

Under Lollapalooza's bag policy, the big option is a clear bag smaller than 12 by 6 by 12 inches; only a one-pocket clutch or fanny pack of 6 by 9 inches or less may be opaque. Hydration packs come in empty, and security searches every bag.

A few items on the prohibited list shape the outfit too: totems and flag poles, blankets, sheets and towels, chairs of any kind, shade structures, and "large chains or spiked jewelry." If your look leans on a studded collar or a statement chain, swap in something soft. Portable battery packs are welcome, the help center offers lockers to rent, and Guest Services hands out earplugs if you forget yours.

With a one-pocket pouch as the only non-clear option, pockets do a lot of the carrying.

Man walking a grassy festival field in Celestial Temple cargo shorts: glowing concentric circles and starburst geometry in teal and violet on deep navy

For the pockets. The Celestial Temple men's cargo shorts ($65, S–5XL) scatter glowing concentric circles and starburst geometry in teal, lime and violet across deep navy. They're a breathable, denim-like 100% poly at 190 g/m², with a button-closure waistband and multiple cargo pockets for your phone, card and earplugs. The same temple glows in Palette Nine, our Midwest fairground rave love story.

After the headliner: one light layer for the lakefront

With normal lows in the mid-60s, Lolla is a light-layer festival rather than a cloak one. Chiffon fits: long sleeves for the breeze along the lake, light enough to fold beside a phone.

Woman in the Egyptian Atlantis chiffon kimono over a navy one-piece and boots before a geometric festival stage: gold eyes and glyphs on navy

The evening layer. The Egyptian Atlantis chiffon kimono ($75, S–5XL) falls nearly to the ankle in deep navy, covered in gold Egyptian motifs: watchful eyes, ringed medallions, bands of glyphs and robed figures toward the hem. It's 80 g/m² chiffon (100% poly) with cuffed long sleeves and an adjustable waist belt. Wear it open over the swimsuit or tank. Its gold also appears in Side B Is Sunrise.

The kimono covers Chicago in August; for fall and winter festivals, our warm-layers handbook takes the story from there. And for Lolla's neighbors on the summer calendar, from Electric Forest to Lost Lands, see our Midwest music festivals guide.

Our studio calendar for a Chicago summer

Our studio date for Lolla is Wednesday, June 9, 2027. Every tank, tee and kimono goes into production once you order, a run of up to 11 business days, then spends up to 14 in the mail. Skipping Juneteenth and the Fourth of July, a June 9 order arrives by Friday, July 16.

  • Why that date. It leaves two weeks before the day the 2026 edition opened. When Lollapalooza posts its 2027 dates, count back from the new opening day.
  • Shipping to Chicago. US orders ship free at $70 and up, which a tank and a snapback together clear.
  • Fit before you click. All sales are final, so send your measurements to art@magusfawn.com; we typically reply within 1–2 business days.

Everything else for Grant Park: crushed velvet tanks · women's swimwear · men's shorts · kimonos · cotton tees · snapbacks

When the headliner ends and the crowd drifts toward Michigan Avenue, let the gold chiffon catch the lake breeze on the way out.

Frequently asked questions

When is Lollapalooza 2027?

TBA for now. Lollapalooza's official site and help center still describe the 2026 run, Thursday, July 30 through Sunday, August 2 in Grant Park, with entrances open from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Once lollapalooza.com posts the 2027 dates, count your order date back from the new opening day.

How many times can you re-enter Lollapalooza in a day?

Twice. According to the festival's help center, fans can leave and come back in two additional times after their first entry, scanning their wristband and passing through security on each return. That makes a hotel run for a dry shirt or an evening layer possible, though every trip means another bag search.

Can you bring a blanket or a chair to Lollapalooza?

No. The official prohibited list includes blankets, sheets and towels, chairs of any kind, tents and shade structures, and hammocks. Plan to stand, dance or sit on the grass in clothes that can take it, such as cargo shorts, and lean on the festival's cooling stations and cooling buses when you need a break.

What is Kidzapalooza?

Kidzapalooza is Lollapalooza's family area, which returned in 2026 with a kid-friendly lineup of performers and activities. The festival is all ages, and its help center lets kids aged 8 or younger in without a ticket of their own when a ticketed adult brings them, two per grown-up at most. Platinum access calls for a Platinum Kids ticket.
