Day Zero Tulum Outfits 2027: What to Wear in the Jungle at Sunrise

|Magus Fawn

The road into the jungle turns gold about an hour before the music starts.

Chit palms lean over the path. The air smells of damp earth and warm stone, and somewhere past the trees a hand drum is already keeping time. Everyone walking in is dressed for the same promise: Day Zero Tulum runs from sunset to sunrise, so Day Zero Tulum outfits have to glow at the first drum and still look beautiful at first light.

Here's the part the veterans love. This night has no cold second act. January in the jungle near Tulum holds around 65–70°F after dark, soft and a little humid, with the canopy keeping the warmth close. You dance all night in what you walked in wearing.

Past editions have sent lasers threading green light through the leaves. Local Maya guides open the night with ceremony. And at the end, when the sky goes pale over the treetops, Damian Lazarus closes with the sunrise set the whole party has been waiting for.

We're Magus and Lylyth Fawn, Los Angeles visionary artists whose whole life orbits festivals. Most of our guides chase the 3 a.m. chill. This one follows the sun all the way around, from the walk in at dusk to the last track at dawn.

What do you wear to Day Zero Tulum?

Wear light, earthy, flowing pieces that breathe through a warm night and glow at dawn. Magus Fawn's Day Zero formula follows the house-music dress code: a chiffon kimono at sunset, then a lace dress, swimsuit or velvet polo for the night, loose lantern pants for the long groove and a bucket hat for the Tulum sun.

The organic and Afro house scene around Tulum dresses earthy and sun-washed: linen and open shirts by day, kimonos and dusters at sunset, natural textures, shell and bead jewelry, everyone dancing in a loose circle of friends. Organic house itself is built on acoustic instruments and natural sounds. We make wearable visionary art rather than linen, so our version of the code is one printed piece with real meaning, worn with natural textures.

Hour What's happening What to wear
Sunset The walk in and the opening ceremony A kimono over your base, a bucket hat until the sun drops
Night Organic and Afro house under the canopy A lace dress, a swimsuit as a bodysuit, or a velvet polo
Deep night The long groove Lantern pants or cotton shorts that move with you
Sunrise The closing set Whatever catches first light best. Keep it on.

Two practical upgrades complete any Tulum rave outfit: closed-toe shoes or sturdy sandals for the jungle paths, and insect repellent in your bag for the hours around dusk.

Sunset in the jungle: a chiffon kimono and a bucket hat

At Day Zero, sunset is when the night begins, and it's the hour the house dress code reaches for a kimono.

The Egyptian Atlantis chiffon kimono ($75, S–5XL) falls almost to the ankle in deep navy, covered collar to hem in gold: pyramids, a reclining sphinx and temple panels stacked like pages from a lost archive. The design imagines Atlantis as a sister to ancient Egypt, and wearing it in the Yucatán, home of the cliff-top Maya city at Tulum, feels like one ancient world paying another a visit. Wear it open over a swimsuit or dress and let the gold catch the last of the sun. The same pharaoh-gold art rides to a house music beach rave in Side B Is Sunrise.

For the bright hours before the gates, and for Tulum's beach afternoons all week, the Sacred Geo bucket hat ($50, sizes XS to L/XL) brings the sun-washed palette house crowds love: pastel lilac, rose and peach, with a Flower of Life lattice and a many-pointed star of sacred geometry across the crown. It shades your face from every side, then folds into your bag once the sun is down.

Dresses and swimsuits for a warm jungle night

A night in the high 60s favors the lightest pieces: a short dress, or a swimsuit worn as a bodysuit, with a kimono on top until morning.

The Dream Weaver women's lace cami dress ($65, S–4XL) pairs black lace at the neckline with a mirrored print of blue, teal and violet ornament, the colors of cenote water seen from the top step. It's short, light and made for a warm dance floor. The Dream Weaver art first danced through a spring house music festival in our love story The Strawberry on the Wrong Hood.

The Golden Phoenix one-piece swimsuit ($65, XS–3XL) fans emerald, gold and violet feathers out in perfect symmetry from a glowing green orb at the heart, a phoenix with its wings drawn close. The phoenix rises again at dawn, and Day Zero's official site frames the 2027 edition in two words: "Begin Again." The print is dye-sublimated, so the color stays put.

Earlier editions of Day Zero had dancers swimming in the Dos Ojos cenotes. The 2027 setting hasn't been announced, so wear the swimsuit as a bodysuit and save the swim for the cenotes and beaches of Tulum season. What should guys wear to Day Zero Tulum?

Guys at Day Zero dress for groove and warmth: a collared or open shirt, cotton shorts or loose pants, and shoes that handle a jungle path. Magus Fawn's men's Day Zero outfit pairs a crushed velvet polo with all-over-print cotton shorts, then trades the shorts for lantern pants for the long dance into sunrise.

A collar dresses you up without adding warmth. The Celestial Temple crushed velvet men's polo shirt ($65, S–5XL) rises in tiers of indigo, violet and teal temple geometry, with small glowing orbs set into the pattern like lamps in a shrine. Crushed velvet throws the stage lights back at you, and short sleeves keep a humid night comfortable.

Pair it with the Solar Eclipse unisex cotton shorts ($65, S–5XL), mostly black, with a golden eclipse ring and a Flower of Life sphere glowing on one leg and fine threads of light spinning out across the fabric. A sun hiding behind the moon is Day Zero in one picture: the sun leaves as the party begins and comes back for the finale. The eclipse has its own love story in Two Minutes of Totality.

The sunrise set: dressing for first light

The closing set is the reason people fly to Tulum in early January. The sky turns from black to violet to gold over the canopy, and the crowd that stayed all night turns to face the light together.

The Liquid Fire men's lantern pants ($80, XS–4XL) pour molten orange, gold, violet and electric blue together like lava meeting the sea, gathered at an elastic drawstring waist and cuffed at the ankle. The wide legs move with every step of a long organic house set, the cuffs keep the hems off the jungle floor, and the palette arrives a few minutes ahead of the real sunrise. Pull them on over shorts or a swimsuit when the dew settles in the hour before dawn.

Carry the night in the Temple of Sound festival backpack ($55–$65 by size, M to XL): a crowned figure sits enthroned among stacked speakers in lavender and silver, a temple built from sound. It holds water, insect repellent, sunscreen, a small light for the path and the lantern pants until you need them. With the backpack and any garment in this guide, your order crosses our free US shipping line at $70.

It debuted in 2012, centers on organic and Afro house, works with local Maya leaders on its ceremonial programming and opens Tulum's January season with a party that runs from sunset to sunrise.

How long does Day Zero Tulum last?

Day Zero Tulum lasts one night, from sunset to sunrise. In early January the sun sets in Tulum before 6 p.m. and rises after 7 a.m., so the music covers more than twelve hours and traditionally ends with Damian Lazarus's sunrise closing set. What is organic house music?

Organic house is a subgenre of house music built on acoustic instruments and natural sounds, such as bongos, congas, kalimba, violin and vibraphone, over a steady house groove. It runs deeper and more meditative than most house. Wikipedia's entry on the genre says Beatport gave it an official category in June 2020.

What is Tulum season?

Tulum season is the run of jungle and beach house events that fills January around Tulum, Mexico, with Day Zero traditionally opening it. Expect sunset sound baths, cenote ceremonies and parties that change from year to year, so a January trip often turns into several nights of music.
